  • Is the phone guy supposed to be Jack Benny?

  • I wonder how Nell got thru this scene without just bursting out laughing, its so damn funny! I think she kind of trying to hide herself laughing at 2:20 you can see she is trying to hold back a laugh! LOL!

  • what is a party line????

  • @maleficentdiva Where strangers call a number and talk to each other. I believe they charged you by the minute. I believe years laters it became free and teenagers use to use it.

  • @Brieannas21 well in that case, they still have them nowadays, they are called phone sex lines! LOL!

  • Nell: Do I look like Mrs. Fong???? ROTFL!

    Nell: if I don't have a phone, YOU, don't have a phone,

Mr. Swackhamer: I am calling the police,

Nell: Not on this phone you aint!!! ( yanks phone out of the wall) ROTFL! this is my favorite episode!

  • I would love to see Nell and Thelma Harper take on Swackhammer! WHOO they would punish his ass! YOU KNOW IT! HA HA!

  • This shoulda been a storyline on Sanford and Son -Esther taking on the phone company-LOL But Nell Carter Rocks this .I loved Gimmie a break in its first 2 seasons, after Joey Lawrence joined, not so much but from 1981-1983 this was a Fun show

  • One of my favorites.

  • I'd love to see Thelma Harper take on Swackhammer.

  • I think all the other people who had numbers ahead of Nell gave up on this idiot and walked out the door.

  • Swackhammer is another Whittendale.

  • It's so sad that I've actually had to deal with bureaucrats like this idiot.

  • I'm surprised they didn't give her an Emmy for this show. They gave Monique an Oscar for her Aunt Jemima role, Nell was robbed.

  • I love this episode. Nell Carter was great and quite a talented singer as well.

  • You Are Sorry Brieannas21 For Blocking My Ability To Connect This To My Facebook.

  • WHOO! Nell was really punishing that phone! HA HA! Go head girl! LOVE YA!

  • OMG this is HILARIOUS! I love how everything falls off the wall when Nell leaves the room! ROTFL! I MISS THIS SHOW! 80's was the best time for sitcoms! I am glad I grew up then! TV NOWADAYS SUCKS!!!!!

  • Nell: I may not know the difference between a microchip or a buffalo chip, but I do know the difference me and a Fong.

    Swackhammer: Now, wait a minute.

Nell: No, you wait a minute!! First of all, you come into my house and you take out a phone that should not have been taken out. Then, you have me to sit here and while you call out numbers for people that don't exist. And now, you want me to believe this stupid computer when it tries to tell me that I'm Chinese!!

  • Go Nell!

  • Gurl Nell Carter was one sassy black Negro! Fo real

  • @damngurl2004 You don't see too many black women like Nell unless it's Mo'Nique.

  • Mo' Nique and Nell are as different as Night and Day. @lacylakevious

  • Do I look like "FONG"? LOLOLOLOL

  • The water bottle leaps out of the fountain! lol

  • wow, so this is waht happens when a sistah bitch meets a gay bitch.

  • 4:26

  • nell was the best!!!! yet the blacks go off now and have their rights. Not the 1980s now.

  • Blacks had rights back in the 1980s as well..but them having rights like all other human beings is WONDERFUL!

  • thats what I meant! My words came out the wrong way. Nell was the BEST!!

  • Nell: Excuse me

    Swackhammer: Can't u c dat I'm busy?

Nell: Oh, I'm sorry, but this is an emergency.

Swackhammer: Oh an emergecy? Take a number and have a seat.

Nell: Take a number is this a bakery.

Swackhammer: U got it honey so put yr cake in dat chair.

Nell: Excuse me. Do they train him or he just a natural fool?

Swackhammer: Sit yr number will be up soon.

Nell: It better be or yours will be.

  • i love that Nell carter, she was the best this is so funny!!!!!!

  • dang I can't believe they have her dressed like Aunt Jemima lol

  • The comment about her being dressed like a Aunt Jemima, is that suppose to score some political correct points or something, I mean Nell did Dress like Aunt Jemima in a episode called Nell's Friend during the third season she walks through the door in which she really looks like Aunt Jemima. Besides Nell head covering is tied in the back not the Front. By the third season she had more control and say with the writers, she had no problem with it so why should you.

  • "look Ive got a problem"

    "most cheapos do" :D!!

  • "Do they train him or is he a natural fool."

  • "Well I Never"

"But Your Mommy and Daddy Did" LOL

  • so this is where Madea got its inspiration

  • that was awesome, i wish we could all do that once in awhile !!!!!!

  • LMAO! My favorite part is when she said, 'Do I look like a Fong to you?'

  • Look like another F word was trying to creep out LOL

  • this episode is great. Swackhammer" Well I Never, and Nell" But your momma and daddy did". haha great stuff.

  • near the end, that looked so much like Madea's act of rampage!!!

  • At 1:27 that reminds me of the scene in Meet The Parents lol

  • Maybe he was calling Debbie Jo's number. 3:41

  • Hilarious, and the first ever appearance of "that jerk, Swackhammer!" The first of many foils for Nell!

  • " Do I look like a Fog to you?" LMAO

  • it's Fong...still funny though.

  • LMFAO!!!!! That was freaking hilarious! R.I.P. Nell Carter.

  • Mr. Swackhammer is also the actor on the CBS sitcom, "The Jeffersons". He's still the same character on this show than he previous one. Sherman Hemsley is the best actor to insult him on "The Jeffersons" as well as the late Nell Carter on the NBC sitcom, "Gimme A Break".

  • @lacylakevious Yeah, he first appeared on Jeffersons in 1977 or 1978 in that role, then came back in the later seasons. His name is Jack Fletcher.

  • LOL...@4:49 watch what happens to the water cooler when Nell slams the door. totally off direction.

  • @sdavis197 Yeah, it seems empty.

  • I dont blame nell for going off on him. I would've lost it too...but with less humor.

  • what's with Nell wearing the MooMoos?

  • This cracks me up!!!!!

  • She DOES look like Aunt Jemima. That's a goddamn shame. Whoever the wardrobe person is needs their ass whooped. And by that I mean, go to the credits, find the name, Google them, MapQuest them, drive (or fly) to their house, ring the bell, wait for them and then slap the holy piss out them. :o)

And she should be dug up and slapped upside the head for letting that person dress them her like this and FOR AN ENTIRE EPISODE. I'm sure this didn't Jemima resemblance didn't go unnoticed.

  • That's because back then, most black characters on television were some kind of stereotype. Nell is obviously one. She's a big black woman, who's loud and nanny to some white kids. She's a "mammy". Therefore her outfit justifies her character. It's a shame.

  • I get what you're saying. I think having the mannerisms and pseudo-behavior of a stereotype is one thing, but dressing the character which already embodies the essence of the stereotype, even if they are not directly playing that role, causes a raft of perception issues on its own.

    (cont.)

  • (cont.)

I am not saying Nell IS Jemima, by any means. The scenes in these episodes do exhibit a kind of strength and courage for which most single, contemporary women would or should strive; that's the positive part I can appreciate: she won't let anyone walk on her even if it's something as trivial as phone access. Even in this positivity of action, I do see some things I have a problem with.

However, the issue here is the choice of costume alluding to a what I feel is a negative image.

  • I agree with you wholeheartedly; but still. The people who wrote the show didn't care about any of that. They only cared about portraying Blacks the way they wanted to which is still pretty sad. And the "dug up" comment... not cool.

  • i never misses her show when i was younger.must see tv! her in the cell to this day makes me pee in myself

  • "Do I look like a Fong to you?" "I don't know, all you orientals look alike." LOL, you can't say shit like that now-n-days. This episode is HILARIOUS.

  • Geez, this brings back memories. Good memories! =)

  • I was twelve when I first saw that episode! I laughed for hours after she ripped the phone out of the wall. I miss Neil Carter

  • I wouldn't be here fool!

  • The telephone representative is Mr. Whitendale from The Jeffersons.

  • "...and now you want me to believe this STOOPID computer (fastly): when it tries to tell me I'm Chinese?! LOL!!

  • damn that computer his huge. that god for modern technology.

  • LOL

  • Great Episode.

  • why is your mother a prostitute?

  • Donkey breath, LMAO!

  • That phone guy was totally in the wrong.

  • When Nell yanks the phone out of the wall...HILARIOUS

  • @GimmeGolden Yeah, and everything on the wall fell down. Plus, notice the water bottle comes out but it is empty?
