I wonder how Nell got thru this scene without just bursting out laughing, its so damn funny! I think she kind of trying to hide herself laughing at 2:20 you can see she is trying to hold back a laugh! LOL!
@maleficentdiva Where strangers call a number and talk to each other. I believe they charged you by the minute. I believe years laters it became free and teenagers use to use it.
This shoulda been a storyline on Sanford and Son -Esther taking on the phone company-LOL But Nell Carter Rocks this .I loved Gimmie a break in its first 2 seasons, after Joey Lawrence joined, not so much but from 1981-1983 this was a Fun show
OMG this is HILARIOUS! I love how everything falls off the wall when Nell leaves the room! ROTFL! I MISS THIS SHOW! 80's was the best time for sitcoms! I am glad I grew up then! TV NOWADAYS SUCKS!!!!!
Nell: I may not know the difference between a microchip or a buffalo chip, but I do know the difference me and a Fong.
Swackhammer: Now, wait a minute.
Nell: No, you wait a minute!! First of all, you come into my house and you take out a phone that should not have been taken out. Then, you have me to sit here and while you call out numbers for people that don't exist. And now, you want me to believe this stupid computer when it tries to tell me that I'm Chinese!!
The comment about her being dressed like a Aunt Jemima, is that suppose to score some political correct points or something, I mean Nell did Dress like Aunt Jemima in a episode called Nell's Friend during the third season she walks through the door in which she really looks like Aunt Jemima. Besides Nell head covering is tied in the back not the Front. By the third season she had more control and say with the writers, she had no problem with it so why should you.
Mr. Swackhammer is also the actor on the CBS sitcom, "The Jeffersons". He's still the same character on this show than he previous one. Sherman Hemsley is the best actor to insult him on "The Jeffersons" as well as the late Nell Carter on the NBC sitcom, "Gimme A Break".
She DOES look like Aunt Jemima. That's a goddamn shame. Whoever the wardrobe person is needs their ass whooped. And by that I mean, go to the credits, find the name, Google them, MapQuest them, drive (or fly) to their house, ring the bell, wait for them and then slap the holy piss out them. :o)
And she should be dug up and slapped upside the head for letting that person dress them her like this and FOR AN ENTIRE EPISODE. I'm sure this didn't Jemima resemblance didn't go unnoticed.
That's because back then, most black characters on television were some kind of stereotype. Nell is obviously one. She's a big black woman, who's loud and nanny to some white kids. She's a "mammy". Therefore her outfit justifies her character. It's a shame.
I get what you're saying. I think having the mannerisms and pseudo-behavior of a stereotype is one thing, but dressing the character which already embodies the essence of the stereotype, even if they are not directly playing that role, causes a raft of perception issues on its own.
I am not saying Nell IS Jemima, by any means. The scenes in these episodes do exhibit a kind of strength and courage for which most single, contemporary women would or should strive; that's the positive part I can appreciate: she won't let anyone walk on her even if it's something as trivial as phone access. Even in this positivity of action, I do see some things I have a problem with.
However, the issue here is the choice of costume alluding to a what I feel is a negative image.
I agree with you wholeheartedly; but still. The people who wrote the show didn't care about any of that. They only cared about portraying Blacks the way they wanted to which is still pretty sad. And the "dug up" comment... not cool.
"Do I look like a Fong to you?" "I don't know, all you orientals look alike." LOL, you can't say shit like that now-n-days. This episode is HILARIOUS.
Is the phone guy supposed to be Jack Benny?

I'm surprised they didn't give her an Emmy for this show. They gave Monique an Oscar for her Aunt Jemima role, Nell was robbed.
