Mr. Swackhammer is also the actor on the CBS sitcom, "The Jeffersons". He's still the same character on this show than he previous one. Sherman Hemsley is the best actor to insult him on "The Jeffersons" as well as the late Nell Carter on the NBC sitcom, "Gimme A Break".

That's because back then, most black characters on television were some kind of stereotype. Nell is obviously one. She's a big black woman, who's loud and nanny to some white kids. She's a "mammy". Therefore her outfit justifies her character. It's a shame.

I get what you're saying. I think having the mannerisms and pseudo-behavior of a stereotype is one thing, but dressing the character which already embodies the essence of the stereotype, even if they are not directly playing that role, causes a raft of perception issues on its own.

I am not saying Nell IS Jemima, by any means. The scenes in these episodes do exhibit a kind of strength and courage for which most single, contemporary women would or should strive; that's the positive part I can appreciate: she won't let anyone walk on her even if it's something as trivial as phone access. Even in this positivity of action, I do see some things I have a problem with.

However, the issue here is the choice of costume alluding to a what I feel is a negative image.
