i have no idea wat any of u gyz r talken about, but i want to get into this stuff cuz i do alot of small welding projects(120ampMig). Anywhere i can get very simple and easy to understand step by step guies as to how to do this? i would like to learn how to metal etch without spending a samll fortune
hey man i made an electric etcher using an old PC power supply, and it works magic on stainless steel, using only salt water. after you finish etching you have to nutralize it with some baking soda, since it creates acid that will oxidize even stainless steel. like you i used felt tip pens, but also made s stamp from felt, it works great. polarity is important - try both. one will etch deeper, the other will give you a darker etch, like the one on knives and such. good luck!
The method your using is called electrolysis and it is a chemical reaction usually a metal oxidation or anodizing. I would say you get a better result using backing soda or another electrolytic compound, salt works but it is not as good as a mild base you could also use a diluted lye mixture,Google electrical discharge machining that is another way of doing metal etching. In electrolysis the deeper one is oxidization, the darker one is the anodized surface from the hydrogen in the water.
First off, the word is CAPACITOR (not "compactor"). Secondly, what you designed here is useless as a metal etcher unless all you want to do is to etch individual pits. You are probably better off not using the capacitor. Then you may be able to "draw" lines and curves with the etching tool (just a guess). But really, your best bet is to use a low voltage transformer instead of a photo flash circuit. 12 volts at a few amps should make a good etching power supply.
I know about EDM technology, and I also know for an etching tool its inefficient. Honesty what practical purpose does this device have... none, maybe a small coil gun at most or a make shift taser. Nether one I really want to disclose because some one is going to zap themselves into the next form of existence. About the whole compactor thing, did I mention I have really bad dyslexia so I actually thank you for pointing out that mistake in the description.
I currently am looking at making my own metal etching tool and that's why I was attracted to your video. I've done some experimenting too with electric etching, and I found so far that a low voltage transformer works very well, and I use a sharpened tungsten welding rod (used for TIG welding) as a stylus. But that still produces very rough scribe lines, and it gets very hot quite fast. Low voltage at high current is safer than your system, too.
I think my father has a PDF on making a homemade EDM I can see if i can send it to you it's not to difficult just time consuming to make. id your interested send me over your e-mail in a message and I will send ya the documents on it.
WOW! That's very kind of you to offer me that! I don't want to give my Email address here for obvious reasons, so do you have some other way that I can contact you?
Great!!!Next time I want to take my PC apart to draw some dots on my hard drive,I'll go to my local radio shack and spend some dollars to make one of these.Cutting edge man!
Not a welder, If your referring to arch welding that uses 2 carbon rods and a high amperage arch to weld, This has instantaneous amperage and would not be applicable for welding. The closest thing this can be associated with would be an EDP etching machine.
it's not something I would not recommend without a degree of electrical knowledge, there is enough power here to potentially kill, I do intend on doing a diagram of the circuit but, basicaly to do something similar you would probably be best of hacking a cheap camera.
This one is designed to be uses for metal etching, However it has a variety of uses, I am sure it would make a great torture device or detonator. The voltage as it is is high but it's non standard and non regulated, It would be best suited for something requiring instantaneous use.

For someone with bad dyslexia, you write well!

It's a welder..... very small scale, but essentially the same thing
