I agree... He was a jerk. "I don't hang out with people that does drugs." Obviously he wasn't a real friend, or he would have been there for River. If he would have been a FRIEND, we might still have an amazing actor among us. Not all the crap in the movies today!
& I always love him & respect him & he inspired me so much, you know both are the same i mean me & him, we want extraordinary things to do, but i will try my best to make him proud. You know when i read he died overdose i was astonished that someone like him who loved nature to do that, but being lonely is the hardest thing that any human can handle,i know that feeling but i make him my role model to believe. Always in our hearts and minds. I Love You Too Death River Phoenix.
I'm a fan of him and respect his believes to make world a better place to live, and he was such a sensitive, soft and kind and loved life and nature, but unfortunately he abused to die young is so heart breaking and so terrible, i think he never had a true friends, maybe he was true friends for others but he never had one, you know to help him to understand him perfectly, because if he had probably never used drugs at all. & i see people wishing they were his age to save him well, it's too late.
Now, i think about it, River was stupid if he thought that people will changed to care about nature and environment i mean, still some try that but most dont care, he tried to numb his pain by abusing drugs this is a ludicrous seriously, he must fought that desire for drugs and must his friends done something, oh major mistake around him they used drugs as well, no wonder he died, because people around him didnt do enough to help him, a talented like him to die in such young age & so sad.Dammit
Will's not exaggerating! I'm sure there was a time when he was just as famous as River. They were both in Stand by Me, plus Will did six years of Star Trek: The Next Generation by the time River had died. He's just not that big of a star anymore
@SeymourSkinner Mmmmm, he was an addict and couldn't cope with the reality of working in the acting business. Exactly as Wheaton said. There's no fucking conspiracy.
The best line of this entire interview was 0:06 "I wasn't Surprised." The best answer is the most honest. Not trying to knock River, because the life of a celebrity must blow.
I think it was clear that Wil was thinking "If I hang around him, what if I get into drugs?" Thing is, I think River's mind was clear enough to not offer drugs to him. River wasn't the person who was like, "Herp derp, get some drugs and see purdy colors! It feeeeeeeeels gooooooood!!!" River was a good-minded and hearted person.
I see Wil's point of not hanging out with people who do drugs but if it was preventable as he said why not try to help him. I think Wil was right River was a private person but I think he was a very sad and lonely person. Someone should of stepped up and helped him.
i would have loved to have heard him going on, on the subject of his take on how his death was easily preventable .... why did it have to cut off then x(
RP was poisoned by the Martian Klan Kikes of Los Angeles that hate human people. If they think you are against their evil race they will poison you and tell you that you have been poisoned and how long you will live before you die of lightening cancer or AIDS or HIV or Brain Tumors. Who poisoned RP? Ask Johnnie D about the workforce in LA. You either Martian Klan Kike or you are unemployable or want to get beamed up and assimilated.
To be a great actor, which is hard. One has to be brave enough to be completely naked in front of the world on larger than life stage. That is, to be theyre most private self in a very public place. An actor has to kill his ego and step through this fire. Its painful and scary. It takes guts to share yourself like that. I respect actors a great deal. Even the so called "ok" actors can make it look easy to the audience,. It definately isnt easy.It takes years of striving to be a better craftsmen.
river and his family grew up in the berg cult. sick pedophiles, all of them. One man killed himself after being made to have relations with his mother. was on primitime live.
Guys, he doesn't ever state that he doesn't like River but he is saying that he dealt with it the wrong way. River was on drugs guys, get over it. But he wasn't a bad person. Wil is just being honest because it doesn't surprise me either that he died. Wil seems really down to earth and an overall good guy. So many people turn to drugs today so if anything we should look at Wil as a role model and not bash him for what he says here
@JigglyRose how do you join the biggest, BIGGEST publicity machine in the world and then say "I hate it people seeing me and asking about me, and...etc..." wtf?? how ass backwards is that? is that the trend now? To be an actor and then say "yeah, I act, but ahh, I hate it when people watch the movies..."
@AudioInklined believe it or not people become actors BECAUSE they want to ACT and love acting & not be chased around the streets or have 20 people hiding n gathering outside your house to take a picture of you as you decide to go for a walk ....or have your love life plastered across the tabloids instead of your latest movie
@AudioInklined rose, that's true in a way and not in another. Some actors don't actually seek the accolades after the production, but most, most of them do. I mean is them not being in front of the camera or the audience in the first place the reason they are doing it? Because they want other people to watch them?? And then Rose, in turn, people begin to WANT to watch them. It's the machine inside of it Jrose.
@AudioInklined some actors are highly intelligent at what they do. It is a craft in every respect, just like any other profession. Some actors are in it for the glory. That is to say...they truly believe that there is something pure there. If they can find it. They believe what they do (if done properly on the whole of a production of course) can have the rare opportunity to find common ground with the audience, in turn doing something very human and worthwhile. THese actors I suppose are few.
@AudioInklined Besides all of this..THere are a 1000 run of the mill bland bad scripts in the industry. So I would have to agree with your points on the whole AudioInklined. If an actor accepts a role for the money and the money alone. Well, these actors can be corrupted in a sense fairly quickly I imagine. An actor is only as good as his script allows, honestly. An actor will starve if he has standards in the film industry. I do like your points raised Audio..peace
I don't care for this guy at all. He says that He and River had not talked for years, yet he seem's to know all about Rivers problems?
According to Rivers family he did not do drugs all that often. You only have to do drugs once to die from them.
I am not trying to say that River was innocent or anything, he made a big mistake, but I don't think this guy knows what he is talking about. The ones that talk so openly usually have other motives and they are the ones that know the least.
@RCinfected Ya he talked a lot about how River Phoenix did drugs, but thats how he died. However he also talked about some of the reasons River used drugs, like how he hated that people cared so much about little insignifegent things, and did not care so much about major issues conflicting the world. He also talked about how River knew that to become succesfull actor he had to put up with these things and to find a way to deal with it, unfortunetly he chose to use drugs, which led to his death.
@THEBOOMBOOMBOOM3 True, Will understood why he did drugs. Other people think, he done drugs, his a piece of shit. Yet he was so down to earth and deserves every right to still be alive today! May he forever rest in peace.
Rivers not dead people. Dont you know he is still alive? As long as there are stories and the need for them...he is still alive. Thats not so sad now is it? ;^) Long live River Phoenix. Come as you are. Despite the drugs, he was a fine and decent young man. Shame on anyone who reduces him to a common meaningless junkie. Those without problems or trials, go on..cast the first stone..yes? Peace and love. Take care
What a sweetheart!! Such an articulate interview..And he watches the prisoner? YAY! We need more like him!! In Hollywood!! Hold yer head, young man, and don't sell your soul, nothin in the world is worth that!!!
I had a close friend that began using drugs, I started too. He began using so much because of depression that it began destroying his life. I tried to get him to stop, and I stopped altogether so not to look like a hypocrite. He wouldn't listen. He thought I was just bringing down him down but he was so messed up, rotting teeth, lost weight. I heard he's now schizophrenic. I never thought I was better than him, I just couldn't force him. Haven't spoken in years. Just sad.
It's sorta sad that he said he didn't hang around with River because he used drugs. River needed as much support as he needed. To decline someone in a time of need, that's pretty cold. But I still love both of them.
@waluigithecool2 That's not what he said. He said he doesn't hang out with people who use drugs, not that he refused to hang out with River because he used drugs. Unfortunate wording, but I guess what he meant is that they didn't hang out in the same circles, losing touch with each other.
@waluigithecool2 exactly what i was thinking. i think ive read a few people stopped knowing river cause of his drugs and its like he needed a friend & help! :(
@waluigithecool2 you have a good chance of getting into drugs yourself when you hang around people who use them on a daily basis. For all we know, wheatons decision to not hangout with that coke head probably saved his life.
@waluigithecool2 Well, did he know? If your best friend started using drugs, heavily, would their death be your first thought? At least from my experience, my first thought is that I don't feel like hanging around them anymore. They aren't pleasant people. Nobody's perfect, so most people wouldn't even think of it that way.
@waluigithecool2 He never said he dissed River b/c of drugs! He probably would have hung out with River if River would have called. But lets be real, if he'd of called River, would River had hung out with him? This guy is a little warped and he knows it. I liked his characters and his acting , but in real life, I'm sure he's kinda bitchy
@waluigithecool2 I agree, but to stay away from an enviroment were there is use of drugs is probably not a bad thing, but here Wheatons comes of as just a douche
I think this is a genuine sentiment on how he feels, but really saying, "I don't hang out with people that use drugs." is really shitty. It's a disease and addicts need people to be there no matter how needy they are.
Drug abuse is not a disease. Drugs are not parasitic self-replicating organisms nor is it a self-contained biological disorder. Telling people this kind of behavior is a disease they have no control over is what keeps people on this shit.
"i wasn't surprised." well really Wil, say how you really felt lol. i mean you're more than entitled to your opinion but...hes coming across as a douche.
see a person that has never touched Heroin will never ever in a million years understand its power, the same with meth, coke,E or any drug really...they can become powerful, powerful beyond your wildest imagination.it is literally like having a demon that makes you feel impossibly good better than anything anyone has felt in their entire life!!! slipping its claws into your flesh.and utterly refusing to remove them...to break addiction is to walk through hell!!
@theSpoonGeenie If your sober drug people will blow you off. If you're not at the bars and parties, drug people aren't going to hang out with you. That's probably why they stopped hanging out at 15 because that's when Phoenix really started to party.
I can't understand why so many people here condemn Wheaton. I don't find him condescending at all, just the reverse, I find he says a lot of friendly things about River. Even River's closest friends couldn't help him, so how could he have possibly done it? Nobody can when it comes to addiction, and it's always easy to point your finger from outside.
@Metaphoid wtf????????? why would you say something like that? no should die the way that River did. i cant believe you would wish that onto someone else..
I like will and everything, but i hate how he said he was good friends with river, but hadnt talked to him in a few years, becasue he doesnt hang out with people who use drugs. that just made me feel like he was an asshole. i understand why he wouldnt talk to him, but the way he said got me so mad, like he doesnt really even care.
I hate the way Will talks about river in this. His friendship doesn't seem genuine he turned his back on river.A real friend stands by some 1 through thick and thin and doesn't let anything or any 1 cum between them.
@twilightriverlove you may want to check your spelling before posting a comment. Anyway no anyone who has been in a similar position knows that you can't really help them they have to seek help themselves. Hanging out with an addict isn't exactly a gratifying experience either. The people who stayed close to river only served to enable him causing much more damage.
It's so weird how He and river haven't spoken since he did drugs. and it's kinda like the same from Stand By Me when Chris and Gordie haven't seen each other in 10 years..
This is just sad. And I agree with the top comment here.
River could have influenced the preteens of our current decade. :( I mean, of course, not through drugs and Stand By Me but through other matters
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
FCK wil wheaton!!! I will never honour him like i honour River Phoenix, Kurt Cobain, Michael Hutchence, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix or even Freddy or Michael or Elvis Aaron Presley.......... FCK wil wheaton 4 life!!!!!
Yes it wudda been sad 2 c River end up like corey haims, in n out of rehab centers, cut of from his career and friends bcus they can't stand 2 c it nomore. Only 2 end up Dying of an Overdose too. The truth is those wudn't of been his only choices but, will nvr kno now will we! Instead he left us early wondering how we who thot we kne this special creature we all called "RIVER" ENDED UP DEAD. :(
I wonder what River would have become today. Would he have the status of Leonardo DiCaprio or another washed up actor on Celebrity Rehab. It's sad the world will never know. He had such talent and beauty. Maybe it's better he's gone because this world is far more uncaring of others today than when he lived. If he thought we put too much emphasis on celebrities then, he'd be ashamed of what we've become today.
How many BS "interviews" on television? How many cliches? How much insincere babble? Wheaton tells it straight and some people kick him in his junk for being honest. I like Wheaton and I like where he's gone post-Wesley. Keep rolling, Wil.
River's death was preventable??? We all know that when it comes to addiction, we really are powerless to save the people closest to us. In the end, it's their decision, and only theirs, to stop. You can have an intervention, tell em how much it hurts them and you and the effect their habit has, and you can send em to rehab, but if they dont want to stop, as soon as they get out of rehab they will be back on that road.
@shawthingfilms i think that's what he meant. it wasn't like he was diagnosed with stage iii brain cancer. river would go for months at a time without using then he would binge. sad thing is he didn't even binge the night he died. he just overestimated his tolerance and underestimated the potency of what he was snorting. i think wil meant it was a senseless death and had river stayed clean he would still be with us today bc otherwise he was perfectly healthy.

Just another reason why I admire Wil as a person. Following him on twitter, he's the kind of guy I'd sit down with, drink a beer or two, and talk about life.
He filmed Stand By Me at fourteen - he was only close to River from 1986-87. He didn't know him at all for the last 6 years - a period of profound growth and change. To say he didn't stay close with River "because he did drugs" is laughable - even the media's account indicates River only started using the last few years of his life - they simply weren't close friends.
His comments, while possibly astute - are still presumptuous; not based on first hand knowledge, but media and Hollywood gossip.
@PescadoPescados No a fence or anything but did u listen to anythink he sed cuz river hated wot people think when they dont even now them and they still cud of been close friens for longer then that cuz it is 3 years cuz they started filimg stand by me in 1985 but it released in 1986
@roxae2929 Will says himself he was only close with River until age 15, when River was 17. (1986 or 1987). How many of us change as a person between the age of 17 and 23? I know I personally changed a lot during those years. Again, six years of profound growth and change during that time - meaning Will only knew the 1987 version of River - the 17 year old version. For some reason Wil's fans think it is important to indicate he knew River well. Wil is a cool guy - he just didn't know River.
@encyc107pedia Excuse me but what the fuck difference did it make if Apple and IHOP are related????And River may have been a drug addict but at least he was geniune and was not a FAKE like Will Smiling in River's face when he was alive and talking shit about River when he is dead. If River was not GOOD enough for him he should have never been his friend in the FIRST place.River will always be in my HEART and I have more respect for him than Will and a LOT of other people who are Asswhipes!!!!!
An actor like River Phoenix is a hero. Not many actors at all give EVerything. Why do actors like River give everything? To connect and find common ground with you..the audience. Do you know how much ego killing is involved in being that effective on screen? Dude was naked up there! And what does he get from a good many people? Shit on! Somethings wrong with that in my mind. What a giving actor who didnt hold anything back! Perfect. His personal life might have been troubled but whos isnt? blah
Geeeez, I had NO idea Wil Wheaton was so incredibly vapid and insensitive. "I wasn't surprised... his addiction... blah, blah, blah..." It's no wonder this guy has no career after Star Trek TNG - to make art, you need a soul to propel it... this guy is LACKING. If you ask me, the wrong guy died. My jaw dropped when he said "I don't hang out with people who use drugs." Well, maybe that's true, but what an AWFUL thing to say about River Phoenix. Wil Wheaton = P.O.S.
@Berus7777 lol. River Phoenix was a junkie. You know what drugs bring you? At best a waste of time while you run away from real life. At worst, death and a family left behind.
Wil Wheaton was smart enough not to be involved with drugs. Don't hate someone because he didn't win a Darwin Award. RP used drugs. You want WW to lie about it? Dumbass.
Honestly, with so much hate over a guy making the right choice, maybe you should take some drugs and follow in your idol River's footsteps.
@encycl07pedia You're missing the point, straight-edge. I've never touched a drug in my life and never will. Yes, River used drugs. The PROBLEM HERE is that, Wil Wheaton is sitting here smirking on camera and disrespecting the memory of someone who is dead. River Phoenix brought more creativity, joy, and genius to the world in his short life than Wil Wheaton ever will. No one's denying that River died because he made bad choices. This is about the snotty, disrespectful TONE Wheaton used.
The truth isn't awful. RP was a junkie, it's no secret. WW certainly knew him better than you did. WW may not be an "A" list star, but he has his faculties in tact and leads a productive life. He is certainly more well adjusted than most kids Hollywood corrupts. You kinda glossed over the part where he was saying that River Phoenix was a good person and hated the fact that people like you have priorities that are all screwed up. Actors aren't heroes, they play pretend for a living.
@Berus7777 Are you so stupid you don't even know that Apple and IHOP are not related? Yeah, maybe you should take that concoction of drugs River took, since you're so smart and witty.
Hell, I'm more of a fan of people who aren't fucking stupid like you. That would be Wil Wheaton, Patriot75, and a whole bunch of other people.
@encycl07pedia OMG, now I KNOW you're Wil Wheaton (or, as they refer to him on "Family Guy" Whil Wheeton".) If you'd like an intimate confrontation with stupidity, you have only to walk to the nearest mirror (or any surface with a high enough albedo - if you even know what that means.) As for drugs, why do you keep trying to foist them on me? Do you sell them when you're not at iHop, or fantasizing about doing customer service or QA at Apple? What a douche bonnet you are.
@RCTPatriot75 I disagree. A select few actors are heros in my mind. The big picture of things in regards to story telling can and has made heros of a select few actors who were and are unparalleled in their abilities in respects to their peers. An actor does play like a child for a living. Yes. That is one part of it and definately a keen observation. However, it is a bit slanted, as well as from some other source ultimately. Yes? lol. Your too intelligent to be nitpicking my statement, really
I don't think he was self-righteous to say he doesn't hang with people who use drugs. Just moments before, he gave a good explanation as to why River felt the need to use them. He understood River's situation; he just doesn't hang with drug users.
From my experience the responsibility was mine to take not others. I lost friends while I was using and that was my fault, not because they judged me but because I was using and it scared them. MY USE was harming me and the ones I cared about, Why would they continue to be in a situation that hurt or scared them? That fear is not ignorance it is based on the pain they saw through my actions. To expect people to try to fix me when I thought I had no problem? Wheaton was a kid at the time back off.
Watching " the prisoner"? " playing video games"?! Wil should of tried saving the rain forrests, playing in a great band, and most of all making great films! he should never of pulled that look of disgust when he said " i dont hang out with people who do drugs"...Wil you screwed up mate, live a little.Your such a bore man!
I agree AbsintheColour, Wil's comment of 'hanging with druggies' is a petty statement. It's that kind of righteous opinion that marginalizes people with addiction.Sure, not every addict is a sensitive, wonderful person and it's his right to disassociate himself from whoever he likes. But to quote River himself "Drugs aren't done just by sleazebags it's a universal disease." And I am ONLY clean because I made the effort to be.NO ONE can change you but the belief in yourself
@jayesskay35 I can understand will's comment about not hanging out with people who do drugs. I was raised to stay away from that stuff and anyone who does it. River and Will may have been friends, but Will did not like being around people who did drugs. It is not so self-righteous.
Am sorry bout your addiction and glad you broke free. It is a very serious matter and I agree that it needs to be addressed. Most peoples death was and is preventable. People die everyday, and most the time it is preventable. Nobody can walk in someones shoes and address someones pain ultimately tho. Maybe God. So im not sure where your headed besides the obvious. And this applies to everyone and not just River.
Yeah, Wil is bang on the money. Judgemental, attention seeker, and ultimately was too good to hang with "druggies" Bang on the money. Sure. haha. Wil didnt know River but for a short while during and after filming Stand By Me years before Rivers death. Come on son
At last, someone goes on the record and expresses their true estimation of the situation and doesn't deny the reality of what was happening in River's life.
I'm a recovering addict of 16 years of abuse and despite what people, even myself, believed about addiction and that getting help and finding a path to recovery is possible.
River's death WAS preventable and sadly, nobody ultimately had the guts to address his pain.
Calling River an addict is a little funny. He was barely a man at his death. My Own Private Idaho was his outdoing. He made the mistake of involving himself too much into the role and the actual "being" a junkie to get into a junkies skin. Im quite sure he was open to trying things and its obvious he did on numerous occasions. I dont feel however that he was the type to become a junkie and stay that way, only he made a devastating mistake. Sure, maybe he was a pot head. big deal. ;^P
And as far as Will Wheaton goes. In hollywood an actor or anybody who works there meets WAY more people than the average person in a lifetime. Way more people. Will even states himself that they hadnt talked in years. When a film is over friends made rarely stay extremely close. It seems to me Will is using this interview as a forum to speak and feel important and attach himself to River. highly doubt he knew him as much as he leads on. Hes leaching on to River here. I wouldnt take thistoheart
this dude annoys me when he says 'i don't hang around with people who do drugs' the way he says it, and the expression on his face, as if he's better than them. I know thats not what he probably meant by it, I dunno, just kindof got that vibe. Rip River, you were a fantastic actor!
I've read a lot of comments here and there going "Drugs killed River" or "Hollywood destroyed River" but iI don't think it's true. River actually died of a deep torment he had suffered from a long time before Hollywood and that was what led him into drugs, and eventually killed him.
If you've read his blog on stand by me and the reunion you'd know how much it impacted him and how much he cared and still cares about river so just shut the fuck up and stop bashing Wil please.
Wow, I can't believe all the people bashing Wil Wheaton when he's just expressing his sorrow over losing a friend. It's so amazing how people think they have the right to bash famous people. Could you imagine how you'd feel if you were in his shoes and you came on here and read some of these comments?
@TruFaith69 I don't mean to blame him for i don't know him, butt his words sound a bit hollow and his facial expression looks fake... Moreover, he says he and River hadn't seen each other for years so it sounds like he's overacting.
@TruFaith69 Could you imagine how you'd feel if you'd been a friend of River's and had tried to help him and then heard some guy who knew River for a year 25 years ago say that no one tried to help him?
This is one of the only interviews about River's death that doesn't seem like bullshit. He talks about River and not just how HE felt or how River dying affected him. Also, if someone's being condescending, you don't talk about how kind, smart and talented, a person was. I put up with friends with drug and drinking problems for years, and no matter what I did, I couldn't help. They have to want to help themselves. I can't blame Will for not wanting to get into something he couldn't handle at 15.
Look, guys, just because he played Wesley Crusher doesn't mean he's the devil. I would only tell him that that drug-users line was a little snobbish. I understand what he means, though, so I can't judge him. If you have a friend who has a problem that you can't abide, and he can't, or isn't willing to, overcome, it's going to effect the friendship.
River was trying to turn his life around at that point in his life. He had planned on retiring or taking a break from Hollywood and had talked with his father about going away and just helping his dad run his restaurant. Drug use is not something that you can beat in a heartbeat. Unfortunately, that night it happened, he took some drugs and it killed him. Such a loss. He was a great actor who loved nature and animals and he had an ethereal beauty that was incomparable. :(
The wheat is never short of words.

I agree... He was a jerk. "I don't hang out with people that does drugs." Obviously he wasn't a real friend, or he would have been there for River. If he would have been a FRIEND, we might still have an amazing actor among us. Not all the crap in the movies today!

So many people turn to drugs today so if anything we should look at Wil as a role model and not bash him for what he says here

JigglyRose 3 months ago
@JigglyRose how do you join the biggest, BIGGEST publicity machine in the world and then say "I hate it people seeing me and asking about me, and...etc..." wtf?? how ass backwards is that? is that the trend now? To be an actor and then say "yeah, I act, but ahh, I hate it when people watch the movies..."
AudioInklined 3 months ago
@AudioInklined believe it or not people become actors BECAUSE they want to ACT and love acting & not be chased around the streets or have 20 people hiding n gathering outside your house to take a picture of you as you decide to go for a walk ....or have your love life plastered across the tabloids instead of your latest movie
JigglyRose 3 months ago
@AudioInklined rose, that's true in a way and not in another. Some actors don't actually seek the accolades after the production, but most, most of them do. I mean is them not being in front of the camera or the audience in the first place the reason they are doing it? Because they want other people to watch them?? And then Rose, in turn, people begin to WANT to watch them. It's the machine inside of it Jrose.
AudioInklined 3 months ago
@AudioInklined some actors are highly intelligent at what they do. It is a craft in every respect, just like any other profession. Some actors are in it for the glory. That is to say...they truly believe that there is something pure there. If they can find it. They believe what they do (if done properly on the whole of a production of course) can have the rare opportunity to find common ground with the audience, in turn doing something very human and worthwhile. THese actors I suppose are few.
AbsintheColour 2 months ago

I have no hate against Will but yes River done drugs. But that's all he talked about! There was more to River than just his drug addiction.
RCinfected 3 months ago
@RCinfected Ya he talked a lot about how River Phoenix did drugs, but thats how he died. However he also talked about some of the reasons River used drugs, like how he hated that people cared so much about little insignifegent things, and did not care so much about major issues conflicting the world. He also talked about how River knew that to become succesfull actor he had to put up with these things and to find a way to deal with it, unfortunetly he chose to use drugs, which led to his death.
THEBOOMBOOMBOOM3 3 months ago
@THEBOOMBOOMBOOM3 True, Will understood why he did drugs. Other people think, he done drugs, his a piece of shit. Yet he was so down to earth and deserves every right to still be alive today! May he forever rest in peace.

@waluigithecool2 Well, did he know? If your best friend started using drugs, heavily, would their death be your first thought? I think this is a genuine sentiment on how he feels, but really saying, "I don't hang out with people that use drugs." is really shitty. It's a disease and addicts need people to be there no matter how needy they are.

Drug abuse is not a disease. Drugs are not parasitic self-replicating organisms nor is it a self-contained biological disorder. Telling people this kind of behavior is a disease they have no control over is what keeps people on this shit.

If he thought we put too much emphasis on celebrities then, he'd be ashamed of what we've become today.

River's death was preventable??? We all know that when it comes to addiction, we really are powerless to save the people closest to us. In the end, it's their decision, and only theirs, to stop. You can have an intervention, tell em how much it hurts them and you and the effect their habit has, and you can send em to rehab, but if they dont want to stop, as soon as they get out of rehab they will be back on that road.
shawthingfilms 7 months ago
@shawthingfilms i think that's what he meant. it wasn't like he was diagnosed with stage iii brain cancer. river would go for months at a time without using then he would binge. sad thing is he didn't even binge the night he died. he just overestimated his tolerance and underestimated the potency of what he was snorting. i think wil meant it was a senseless death and had river stayed clean he would still be with us today bc otherwise he was perfectly healthy.

Perfect. His personal life might have been troubled but whos isnt? blah
AbsintheColour 8 months ago
Geeeez, I had NO idea Wil Wheaton was so incredibly vapid and insensitive. "I wasn't surprised... his addiction... blah, blah, blah..." It's no wonder this guy has no career after Star Trek TNG - to make art, you need a soul to propel it... this guy is LACKING. If you ask me, the wrong guy died. My jaw dropped when he said "I don't hang out with people who use drugs." Well, maybe that's true, but what an AWFUL thing to say about River Phoenix. Wil Wheaton = P.O.S.
Berus7777 8 months ago
@Berus7777 lol. River Phoenix was a junkie. You know what drugs bring you? At best a waste of time while you run away from real life. At worst, death and a family left behind.
Wil Wheaton was smart enough not to be involved with drugs. Don't hate someone because he didn't win a Darwin Award. RP used drugs. You want WW to lie about it? Dumbass.
Honestly, with so much hate over a guy making the right choice, maybe you should take some drugs and follow in your idol River's footsteps.
encycl07pedia 8 months ago 4
@encycl07pedia You're missing the point, straight-edge. I've never touched a drug in my life and never will. Yes, River used drugs. The PROBLEM HERE is that, Wil Wheaton is sitting here smirking on camera and disrespecting the memory of someone who is dead. River Phoenix brought more creativity, joy, and genius to the world in his short life than Wil Wheaton ever will. No one's denying that River died because he made bad choices. This is about the snotty, disrespectful TONE Wheaton used.
Berus7777 8 months ago
@Berus7777

Hell, I'm more of a fan of people who aren't fucking stupid like you. That would be Wil Wheaton, Patriot75, and a whole bunch of other people.
encycl07pedia 8 months ago
@encycl07pedia OMG, now I KNOW you're Wil Wheaton (or, as they refer to him on "Family Guy" Whil Wheeton".) If you'd like an intimate confrontation with stupidity, you have only to walk to the nearest mirror (or any surface with a high enough albedo - if you even know what that means.) As for drugs, why do you keep trying to foist them on me? Do you sell them when you're not at iHop, or fantasizing about doing customer service or QA at Apple? What a douche bonnet you are.
Berus7777 8 months ago
@RCTPatriot75 I disagree. A select few actors are heros in my mind. The big picture of things in regards to story telling can and has made heros of a select few actors who were and are unparalleled in their abilities in respects to their peers. An actor does play like a child for a living. Yes. That is one part of it and definately a keen observation. However, it is a bit slanted, as well as from some other source ultimately. Yes? lol. Your too intelligent to be nitpicking my statement, really
AbsintheColour 8 months ago
I don't think he was self-righteous to say he doesn't hang with people who use drugs. Just moments before, he gave a good explanation as to why River felt the need to use them. He understood River's situation; he just doesn't hang with drug users.
janenguy2011 8 months ago 7
From my experience the responsibility was mine to take not others. I lost friends while I was using and that was my fault, not because they judged me but because I was using and it scared them. MY USE was harming me and the ones I cared about, Why would they continue to be in a situation that hurt or scared them? That fear is not ignorance it is based on the pain they saw through my actions. To expect people to try to fix me when I thought I had no problem? Wheaton was a kid at the time back off.

I agree AbsintheColour, Wil's comment of 'hanging with druggies' is a petty statement.

Come on son

Wil is bang on the money.
