Hey, I'm new to fly fishing and I'm trying to order some wooly buggers. I have a 9 FT 7 weight rod and reel outfit and I was wondering what size hooks I need. I want a size that i can use both on Trout and Largemouth Bass.. Thanks in advance.
1st u dont need to buy an expensive fly rod and all that junk. go online or to wal-mart and buy a scientific angler kit. they're really good and its just as good as anything out there.
fly fishing kit, 9ft 5/6wt rod and floating fly line, all comes in the kit,its about $75. a must learn to cast. "the new fly fishing basics" best DVD out there. hope this helps you start off jag. dont let people make you think its an expensive sport.
yes, there are a kagillian flies out there, but for something that works on smallies, use clousers (chartrues/white/red eyes are best) and wooly buggers (purple w/bead head are the best, then brown, black, & olive), but all colors will work. white foam spiders are good for surface. i'll try to make some videos on how to tie some smallmouth bass flies & post them if people are interested.
I have the 9ft 5/6wt Scientific Anglers pack and its an excellent rod for me to learn on; very forgiving, yet heavy enough to get things moving.
I'm looking at making the step up from a combo to a better rod specifically for bass in the lower price ranges and I'm looking at the Ross Flystik. Its 6 or 8 weight, mod/fast and 7'11". I'm not entering any tournaments, but accuracy is a big deal for me, bank fishing and coves from small boats.
@spacefrogg5 cool i was looking at the white river fly shop's dogwood canyon set. comes pre-assembled, do you think its a good buy? and what weight shouldi get?
i'm using a 6wt 9ft med-fast st croix fly rod, but i usually use a home made fly rod and catch tons. just goes to show you don't always need an $800 fly rod. a $40 pacbay blank from ebay is just as good. basically it comes down to the casting and the rewards of catching fish on homemade stuff.

cool, yea i agree that the price of the rod does not make it good. I have not built a rod before, how hard is it to do.
