  • How fast is she going?

  • No joke, I rode from Ogden to Evanston in the cab of this beauty!

  • I like how they closed firebox for the cameras.

  • it bull carp taking away away amircan history never saw one steam train are better than dissenles

  • @TheRjwhiting ....english much?

  • all those moving parts made in 1943 working in perfect unison and i cant figure out how to program my 2011 tv remote

  • Well that would be Awesome if they are going to restore those 4000 series Big Boys that is great news if true. I would want to see them I want my three year old to have the opportunity to enjoy seeing them. Preserving the past in my opinion helps improve future generations

  • I say take all the new crap off the rails and recommission and build more of the real locomotives same with cars I say nothing newer than 1979 Lets call it back to the future.

  • I say take all the new crap off the rails and recommission and build more of the real locomotives same with cars I say nothing newer than 1970

  • Great Video!!!

  • love the deep horn

wish they had these on the east coast

  • love the deep horn

  • It's a shame none of the 4000 series Locomotives are running. They were larger yet then these. With there 4-8-8-4 articulated system, they were something to see. 3985 is a marvelous locomotive 4-6-6-4 and 1.02 million pounds, it's sight to see. Maybe U.P will send her out on another run soon. We need to keep a few around, for historical purposes if nothing else.

  • @Nicodemus98 Where did the 4000 series go? are they still in existence?

  • @smoorehouse1 I think only three survive all static displays. The rest were demolished and sold as scrap. One is in Ohio, I think and I'm not sure about the other two or if they too joined the rest as scrap. Now I'm going to have to do some checking to see about them.

  • @MrDanwillis451 I know that there are two within an hour and a half of me. One is in Cheyenne and the other is at the Forney Museum in Denver. As for the other remaining displays, I know for sure that one is at Kenefick Park in Omaha, NE right next to DDA40X #6900. I don't know where the others are off hand, but I'm sure our pal Google will help with that.

  • @MrDanwillis451 One is in Cheyenne, Wy and the other I think is in Los Angeles, ca

  • @Nicodemus98 That is a damn shame I cant believe the lack of vision those engines were ere placeable pieces of American history

  • @smoorehouse1 They call it progress. right,,,,,,, Real progressive to destroy the astounding locomotives ever built. People tend to be very short sighted where such things are concerned. Out with the old, in with the new. It's a pity. I understand U.P has reacquired two of the 4000 Series Big Boy's and in the process of restoring them, what will likely be a long job, as they did the Challengers. Here's hoping, I haven't gotten confirmation yet, but, I'm going to check and see if I can find out

  • @Nicodemus98 The Big Boys will never run again, their weight is too much for any mainline today. Anyone who tells you any different is a fool.

  • @Vintage1976 i'm not totaly sure, but what i've been told is that the challenger is actually heavier and more powerful than the bid boy. the big boy is longer and faster. the challenger hauled heavier coal trains in the appelachians opposed to hi-balling on the open plains likie big boy! i know big boy had some passes to conquer but had enormous distances in order to acheive this opposed to challegers going up and down with pullers and pushers.

  • @hammerdick777 with a little bit of lazy man's research i just realized what i was told was horseshit! oh well! but i still beleive the axle weight might have been more on the challenger since it wasn't that much shorter than a big boy yet was minus two axles?

  • Great video as usual, Skip.

  • Do you know if they've decided, cause i think it shows on the UP steam shop scheule that a trains supposed to go to North Platte, but it doesn't say which one...

  • 844 is Ready it just did the July CFD run 3985 is a Longshot

  • Absolutely awsome. That is a brilliant vid of a superb machine.

  • Great show!!!

  • Is the 3985 going to be coming through Neb again any time soon?

  • @colinroxanduknowit Sept- Oct 2010

  • The more steam expended usually means that the elements of the locomotive are working harder(under load or need of more power)

  • Incredible footage of this immense locomotive, thanks...5* Bob

  • Some great footage here - thank you for sharing! 5*

    Mike

  • Realy great steamer,very nice,

    5 Stars

  • I don't understand Steam that much but why did the smoke all of sudden kick into such blank smoke when it had been so clear of steam exhaust? Was it them letting off the throttle and that messed up the air flow?

  • Most likely the crew was sanding the flues.

  • Ah, thank you, that makes tons of sense.

  • Nice pace shot.

  • excelente video!! Saludos Alejandro

  • it was only fantastic, and only 5 stars.

    because too short..
