I sang this at LGPE when I was a sophomore and in rehearsal we'd always see how fast we could do it before it sounded like mush! We'd usually be in the 1:10-1:20 range.

Well we did this for a fall concert last year in about 1:05....as I was a freshman, I couldn't go to all-state, where they did it, but I bet it would've sounded amazing.....and if you can't hear the words, listen harder, because I can understand what they're saying.

I sang this at All-State Choir, and we did it in under a minute. Not to brag, but we sounded SO much better than this. It was hard, but we pulled it off.

@19eyescream we were told by our director, Dr. Brady Allred, that in Hungary, if a choir can sing this song (or pieces similar to it) in under a minute they would be considered a legitimate Hungarian choir. He asked us if we would like to attempt it, and we did!

I think you needed to master this a little more at a slower tempo before you could get it to this speed; especially the "quid quid amabile" part where the soprano's and basses were on the beat the alto's and tenor's were off the beats. It was a tad messy.

Actually, with this song it's tradition to sing it as quickly as possible, there are even competitions in the home country of the composer (his homeland escapes me) to see which group can perform it the fastest. In this case, speed IS quality.

the tempo is just Allegro which just means fast. It depends on the conductor on how fast this is supposed to be sang.

They are singing in the tempo it was written, which is the tempo of totally ridiculous. When my choir sang it we slowed it down a bit. The Latin is hard to spit out that fast lol, so props!

I agree with the many other comments. It's much too fast for my liking. I felt that the super quick tempo took away from the meaning and depth of the piece. It was just notes on a page.

our all-state mixed choir did it in 55 seconds too and they did a fantastic job.

It's clearly meant to be sung at insane speed. The ending wouldn't have quite the right effect if it was sung any longer than 1:10.

I just got the opportunity to sing it again for southern california honor choir, and we sang it a tad bit slower than this, but not that much slower. we finished it in maybe 1:00.

@vivosergirl I respectfully disagree. While it is certainly fun and amusing to sing it that fast, the music for it I have is marked Allegro which clocks in anywhere between 1:10 and 1:40. To sing it faster is to lose the cantabile sensibilities indicated throughout. The beauty of this song is the rapid juxtaposition of lyrical melodic lines and disjointed harmonies working together with pinpoint accuracy, not seeing who can barrel through it the fastest.

@geoflo1024 Thank-you! So many people are in love with trying to get this song out as quickly as possible and it gets sucked of a good deal of it's color that way. Yes, This song should be fast, but making it too fast boils it down to just that. Taking it just a tad slower alows the listener to catch all the great cromatic scales and dissonant chords.

it's not too fast.. in hungary where they do this piece, they take it to competitions. everyone sang it so well that they started to see who could sing it the fastest. the goal is to get it in under a minute. :)

yeah, we did it that fast from the beginning, when we first did the song, and that speed just kinda grew on us. we liked it like that.

and to be honest, the video camera wasn't a great one, so the recording doesn't do the actual performance any justice. on official recording, and our own recordings, you could definitely understand the words.
