stockwood has a good humour, but this muggeridge is a complete hypocrit, with his pompous talk of the "incarnation" -- someone put it quite right when he said when muggeridge lost his ability for womanizing he turned to christianity
Thank you Not the Nine O'Clock News for coming to the Pythons aid and standing up for them and for showing how ridiculous that interview was. Bless you x
That bishop and other guy were completely ridiculous. The film criticized the negative aspects of religion, and frankly it is just a film, even if the film was actually blasphemous, even if it was actually offensive I doubt that 2 billion Christians are going to change because of a rather good bit of humour.
@tony671 I find the film amazing and I am a Christian I love what Cleese says about people misinterpreting it and remembering it wrong, since it isn't so much the words but the interpretation and the person using them to their whims that causes problems, I mean to say that that anyone can take anything as a justification for action like Timothy McVeigh who used to beautiful poem Invictus as his final words after blowing up a building. It is the sorruption of words rather than the words.
sorry to nitpick Terry G but it wasnt just the English but the Welsh as well who used to organise trips out of Swansea and Pontypridd to see the film (my parents were actually part of it) so dont go giving the English all the credit but will forgive him as long as he doesnt crucify my Welsh self next to a Swedish person
so ashamed that Mervyn Stockwood was born in my home-town, no wonder i only just found out on Wikipedia as Bridgend is so bloody ashamed to have produced such a pompous arrogant ass
Sorry but saying that Michael Palin, "the nicest man in the world", needs a "new heart" is a bit ridiculous. Bloody American churches are just against cross dressing
God that councillor from Harrogate is such an arse. How the hell did he even get elected? "Have you seen the film?" "No, but the Festival of Light says it's bad." "What do you know about the Festival of Light?" "Nothing." What a prick.
WELL DONE PYTHON!!! love them all- their case was won the minute they released the film and they knew it!! Well done Cleese and Palin!! BTW Loved that Rowan Atkinson bit 'well i didn't expect the spanish inquisition' :D:D:D:D
Being agnostic, i think the thing is most religious people are actually reasonable, but you don't hear about them because they're reasonable and don't complain either finding it funny, or even if they don't like it they realize it's just comedy. You only hear the unreasonable minorities of each religion who feel, for some reason, that they have to take exception and make a big thing of their complaint
Conservative Christians-they ban Life of Brian, but promote Passion of the Christ (which, IMO, does far more damage to Judaism and Christianity). They're a bunch of idiots
The sermon on the mount? One of the "most sublime utterances"? It's just one string of disjointed statements without any one philosphy holding them together. Any demented granny could do better than that.
If these people feel like there faith needs defending then that can't say much about the faith in question can it ?! So effectivly they are saying that there relgion is weak and needs defending. This is exactly what the python team were pointing out in there material. So much narrow minded thinking breeds ignorance and creates misery for others as a result. Long live the python!!!
I'll never understand how people can be so insecure in their religion that they feel so incredibly threatened by a fucking Monty Python movie. Don't they realize that all their doing with their obnoxious demonstrations is making more people want to go see it. Get a life you narrow-minded pricks.
@ 6:40 - Little mistake: The fake-bishop made a film about a guy called "Jesus Christ". His opponents called this blasphemy against Monty Python and the comedian messiah John Cleese.
they did it to Johnny Thunders....they did it to Python...why are there always so many people in every country in every bit of history that have really nothing better to do?! go get a life, for christ's sake! (if you will excuse my language)...
I cannot help to feel sad when I see this documentary. I cant help myself asking when people will stop being so narrow-minded and self-focused on their own beliefs and thoughts of how the world is and will be. It is of course natural for people to defend their way of life but that doesnt justify their way of forcing their life upon others. Religion like science is both a way of life and probably both are needed to live life at its full consent.
You're so full of shit. Who's having the tantrum the person asking for a reasoned supported argument, or the one resorting to name calling and ad hominem attacks?
You never went to college, did you? You see in places of higher learning when someone makes a claim they're expected to back it up with facts. If you can't cite something you shouldn't say it, but I guess you can rely on the anonymity of the internet to say whatever bullshit you want to.
That has nothing to do with "The neighbors of the 19 MUSLIM hijackers said, "they were the nicest people I have ever met."
They were shocked that they slit a 7 year old boy's throat on the plane to make the parent's complacent.' Cite this. Nice try with the straw man though.
Don't get me wrong, I dislike Islam, just as I dislike Christianity, Judaism, Hinduism and most other religions. But I've known some great Muslim people, and to tar them with the same brush as the ones issuing death threats is just unfair. Many Muslims are as reasonable as any middle-of-the-road Christian, and since everyone is flawed in some way, I'm not going to judge them harshly.
"You don't have to see a pig sty to know it stinks." What a great way to commit intellectual suicide. Maybe the board member who said that was in fact an undiscovered natural comedy talent...
Islam has no more entitlement to respect than anything else. Free speech doesn't give way to anyone, especially those who try to silence it through fear.
The festival of darkness is more like it. These people have the same mind set as the people who ran the inquisition. And would be quite happy to start it up again.
@EvilMouseOfDoom yeah mate, exactly right ! And the sad thing is that it was local government guys just like him who decided whether or not it was LEGAL for me to watch that film-I was 16 when it came out-so I could have seen it legally in some parts of the city I lived in (because over 14) but couldn't have in others( because under 18 ).But this was the same time when "Never mind the bollocks" by the Sex Pistols was sold in brown paper covers because it was "offensive". Judaism isn't called "church." There isn't really a collective name for the Jewish religion, (besides Judaism). Yeah, there's no such thing as a Jewish church lol

Ug, I hate censorship. However, if you want to make sure that your film/book/etc gets publicity, the best way to do so is to have it be banned/censored.
I think from 9:20 to the end summarises things nicely.
Religious leaders hold so much power its dangerous. There is no safety from them and they can pretty much say anything and cause thousands, possibly millions to act on their words. Political leaders would dream of the power of what religious leaders wield...
well thats the reason there is religion not to put people together or help people being respected by this ''god''
religion is a political party only their leaders are not democratic and therefore allowed to forbid everything they want to and people follow them because they never felt being responsable for their decisions
thank zeus the world is not as influenced by these religious nuts as it was back then! they're still around (i.e. jerry falwell, abu hamza), but i think most people now see them for what they are.
I absolutely love that not the 9 o' clock news sketch, sheer genius! I think that you have tho be a proper python fan to understand it though (as i am!) - Rowan Atkinson- "Well, I Certainly didn't expect the spanish inquisition!" rofl!
Yeah, they think it mocks Jesus cause they're too damn stupid to notice that Jesus and Brian were 2 different people (Jesus was in the movie after all); my guess is that they're the same people who're convinced guys such as Ozzy Osbourne is a satanist... they just never look beyond the extremely obvious things and completely miss the point of things.
I don't think it's ridiculing anybody, really. I think they just decided to make a film, and, it was really funny. They didn't have a plan that they were at dawn to go out and verbally berate people.
the funny thing is that it isn't ridiculing God or Jesus. it's ridiculing the people who are stupid and have no thoughts of their own. it's ridiculing people who banned the film without seeing it.
Really, i'm a Christian with NO doubts about my faith, and Life of Brian is the funniest thing ever. A lot of the jokes there would only be picked up by christians anyway. I notice that the Pope, or the Archbishop of Canterbury or the PAtirarch of Jerusalem raised no voices. it's all Protestants and fundamtenalist Christians. that begs the question: how were these responses, by these people, any different from the radical Muslim response from the Danish cartoon incident?
John Cleese: "You've got to remember that christianity in America is mainly about sex. They're so deeply uncomfortable about every aspect of sex, that they don't care much about wars or DESTROYING THE ENVIRONMENT (watch?v=OtjaVVmGJCU) or financial corruption. But anything to do with sex is set above. And this is because these people are operating at a very low level of mental health. They are incapable of understanding the teachings."
I just wanted to express my agreement and extend to the EU.
Once again the american religious freaks try to save us all with their ignorance. Whats changed todays in 2008 . . . . absolutely nothing. We wouldnt be able to make this film today.
PS. Have you ever noticed how religious zealots look completely unevolved. Take that fucking slap-headed Mary Whitehouse colleague. This guy is the D in DNA, and that D stands for denial. What a plonker.
can someone upload the interview that john cleese and michael plain had with those two other guys, since it looks interesting and i have never beeen able to find it.
I just might add here that to the youth of Holy Royal Britania and the youth of Holy Holy United Holy States of Holy America, the pythons are bigger than Holy Jesus.
Holy Uuups!
It is reported that Mary-Klux Whiterobe-Klan is going to burn down the Holiwood (holy) Bowl...
thanks for uploading this as never saw it as i missed it when they showed it on tv so thank you!!!!
also i was brought up as a catholic and im a big monty python fan and when i first saw the life of brian i absolutly pissed myself and still do ......basically religion in it whole needs to fucking lighten up its redicoulus !!!
if people feel threatened by a good-natured spoof that what is that saying about the values they stand for? a religion should be able to withstand more than a bit of an entertaining jab. i respect some parts of the christain faith but the parts those two leaders stood for was just ridiculous and hypocritic
I don't think there could have been anything that promoted Life of Brian better than banning it in so many places. As they said, people would get together and go see it somewhere else anyway. And by banning it, this probably made the public more aware of it than they even would have been otherwise. So Mary Whitehouse and Co.'s plan backfired big time.
I am a devout Christian but I love Monty Python and this film didn't offend me one little bit. When you look at certain films/shows today, Life of Brian's spoof pales in comparison
When the interviewer or whoever asked that old dude about why they banned Life of Brian and he said that he banned it because of what he had heard and he hadn't even had seen it, i was sitting there thinking it had just become a big joke and people were taking it too far. The pythons were respectable people and wouldn't do some of the things people were accusing them of. Its just a bloody movie, get over it!
Oh my god... i feel so bad for Michael... he's such a great man, had all the best intentions when making this film... he didn't deserve being to vicously attacked by these church people.. at 4:48 he looks like he's going to cry, right after he says "You've come with an open mind I realise that"
Python has had a far more positive impact on human history than Christianity, it's brought a lot of joy and laughter to people, where as religion has only brought fear and guilt.
Yes, and we all know comparing the best with the worst is such an accurate way of comparing. Especially when it's topped off with lovely rash generalisations.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
That's not true. Jesus has done way more for me, and millions of others, than Python ever could. I love Python, but Jesus is definitely better. Belief in Him, and obedience to His words, brings hope, love, comfort, grace, goodness, peace, and so much more. He's the best! But, you don't relate to Him much, so I can see how you can have your perspective.

hahah like the gay bishop. his the biggest hypocrite of all.
imperialcereal 2 years ago 2
Why is he a hypocrite?
The truth is that you are the hypocrite by equating homosexuality with the argument he makes.
You are saying that, because he is homosexual, he has no right to an opinion on the film.
What on earth has his sexuality got to do with his opinion? Absolutely nothing.
All your comment does is expose your homophobia.
I've read similar comments re heavy drinking...total irrelevance. Heavy drinker/Homosexual= religious bigot....nope, sorry.

lmfao!
i love monty python and life of brian is amazing!
i come from the bible belt in texas but after having religion shoved down my thought like the pythons i get why religion is annoying
but theres 3 things
1]what cleese said about american christians is 100% true i just havnt ever found a way to find the words!
2]people need to learn to have a sense of humor
3] the sad thing s to this day people in churches in the bible belt say that this movie mocks christ
haha people are stupid oh well :]
misselphie7 3 years ago 2
Yeah, they think it mocks Jesus cause they're too damn stupid to notice that Jesus and Brian were 2 different people (Jesus was in the movie after all); my guess is that they're the same people who're convinced guys such as Ozzy Osbourne is a satanist... they just never look beyond the extremely obvious things and completely miss the point of things.

Brilliant! Especially Cleese's analysis of American Christians in the beginning... :-)

I don't think it's ridiculing anybody, really. I think they just decided to make a film, and, it was really funny. They didn't have a plan that they were at dawn to go out and verbally berate people.
youvebeenthunderstru 3 years ago 3
the funny thing is that it isn't ridiculing God or Jesus. it's ridiculing the people who are stupid and have no thoughts of their own. it's ridiculing people who banned the film without seeing it.

Really, i'm a Christian with NO doubts about my faith, and Life of Brian is the funniest thing ever. A lot of the jokes there would only be picked up by christians anyway. I notice that the Pope, or the Archbishop of Canterbury or the PAtirarch of Jerusalem raised no voices. it's all Protestants and fundamtenalist Christians. that begs the question: how were these responses, by these people, any different from the radical Muslim response from the Danish cartoon incident?
ironknight5990 3 years ago 14

TwoOpposableThumbsUp 3 years ago 3
"So, you've not actually seen the film?"
"Er, no, we haven't."
Religious ignorance personified.

MikeMJPMUNCH 3 years ago
whoa... Michael looks mad.
he never gets mad. The pythons have only seen him get angry once, and that was after he crawled through the mud, eating fake mud.
How could they make him mad?? That's amazing. Only pure evil can get Michael mad...
xleper17 3 years ago 13
I just might add here that to the youth of Holy Royal Britania and the youth of Holy Holy United Holy States of Holy America, the pythons are bigger than Holy Jesus.
Holy Uuups!
It is reported that Mary-Klux Whiterobe-Klan is going to burn down the Holiwood (holy) Bowl...

if people feel threatened by a good-natured spoof that what is that saying about the values they stand for? a religion should be able to withstand more than a bit of an entertaining jab. i respect some parts of the christain faith but the parts those two leaders stood for was just ridiculous and hypocritic

DontTouchMyTea 3 years ago 9
I don't think there could have been anything that promoted Life of Brian better than banning it in so many places. As they said, people would get together and go see it somewhere else anyway. And by banning it, this probably made the public more aware of it than they even would have been otherwise. So Mary Whitehouse and Co.'s plan backfired big time.
Revolution0712 4 years ago 4
I am a devout Christian but I love Monty Python and this film didn't offend me one little bit. When you look at certain films/shows today, Life of Brian's spoof pales in comparison

When the interviewer or whoever asked that old dude about why they banned Life of Brian and he said that he banned it because of what he had heard and he hadn't even had seen it, i was sitting there thinking it had just become a big joke and people were taking it too far. The pythons were respectable people and wouldn't do some of the things people were accusing them of. Its just a bloody movie, get over it!

Oh my god... i feel so bad for Michael... he's such a great man, had all the best intentions when making this film... he didn't deserve being to vicously attacked by these church people.. at 4:48 he looks like he's going to cry, right after he says "You've come with an open mind I realise that"
I love this man to death;...
Sukriti 4 years ago 4
Python has had a far more positive impact on human history than Christianity, it's brought a lot of joy and laughter to people, where as religion has only brought fear and guilt.
eamonncake 4 years ago 5
Yes, and we all know comparing the best with the worst is such an accurate way of comparing. Especially when it's topped off with lovely rash generalisations.
BuffaloBill23 4 years ago
This comment has received too many negative votes show
That's not true.
