I was able to see the Dixie Dregs back in 1989 when they played in Norfolk, Va at the Boat House. I was so close to T. Lavitz, I cold have reached up and touched him. I already knew that Steve Morse was totally awesome. However, Dave LaRue and Steve started a bass / guitar duel on stage, and after it ended, Steve actually gave a nod of the head, indicating how great Dave is in his own right! The only disappoinment was how small the crowd was that night. Truly, one of the best bands ever!
I saw these guys in Gainesville Florida maybe a couple days before or after this was recorded. Literally sat on the stage in front of Morse. Simply one of best concerts I've ever been to.
@bassdudeellis It's remarkable that 20 years later the same musicians get back together and play as good or better than ever. I saw them a year ago and they were great as always, but nothing tops the 2007 show I saw with the Steve Morse Band opening for the Dixie Dregs - 2 drum kits on the stage. Van Romaine and Rod Morgentein duelling and jamming together; Jeff Watson joining Steve for a solo on "Cut to the Chase." I wish the concert hall allowed video cameras. All musicians were in top form.
Yep, the old Musicians Exchange!!Imusta lugged our big band's(then ADB now Jaco P. Big Band)entire set up up & down 100,s of times, but, every show there is unbridled magic!!!Thank you Don Cohen. The Dregs blow my mind 100%of the time every time.
awesome song,,,seen it performed life in philadelphia,,,,and have the album too. the dream theater cover isnt that good as the original, i guess it is a matter of personal taste
Looking forward to DT's cover. Their live performances are amazing. One could hear subtle hints of John Petrucci being influenced by Steve Morse on the Awake album. Then "State of Grace" from the first LTS CD sounded like Steve's "User Friendly" from Coast to Coast. Was lucky enough to catch an LTS reunion concert last summer w/Tony Levin. This was an incredible performance - off the charts.
ackk my mistake. Sorry, must've been busy or sleepy or something ;x Was meaning, The Test That Stumped Them All. the first few seconds of that, and 1'30" of the dream theater recording.
steve has one of the best alternate picking hands in the business

Morse is a monster! Can't wait to see what Dream Theater does with this song. They are covering it on their next album, coming out 6/23.

It's fantastic and they enlisted Jerry Goodman for the violin parts.

see what i mean...dream theater knows violin ear candy

and, i just realised this, but a section of this song's intro is the exact replica of one of the main riffs of SDOIT's War Inside My Head.
Worth noting i think ;P

@kaelvin Agree. The violin solo is also way out of tune on the DT version.
