  • Very nice man... Thanks for the info.

  • What is the thing that smelts and removes air called? And can it be used to store food long term, for prepping?

  • what if I don't have a sealer? will my food go bad?

  • Where to find dehydration foods?

  • Thanks for this video, I have been doing some research on dehydrating and vacuuming for my 2012 AT thru-hike. One question about the heat sealing bags; I imagine they are pretty sensitive to heat, but do you know if you could add boiling water directly to the bag to rehydrate your meal? Or could you just cut the top off of zip lock bags and vacuum those?

Just a thought on diversifying my meals, because then you could make meals with sides instead of just one pot meals.

  • is that a soup?

  • how do you prepare these on the trail?

  • sounds just like my gar (RRRRRRRRRRRRRRRrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr) lol

  • I Love this idea... Thank you soo much for the great video.

  • Ok Tinny... this is LEGIT!!!

  • what do you do with the plastic after the meal?

  • smellevision. that's what I'm talkin about.

  • shit now i could store some weed in a air tight seal too keep fresh

  • Great channel... you've got a lot of good ideas on here. :)

  • WOW! You have no idea how long I have been trying to fight a way around mre s and mountain house freeze dried food. Thank u so much. Now I can feel good about what I'm eating. And my wife will not have to worry about food allergies. U are awesome.

  • Great Vid!!!

  • 3lbs. dehydrated is waaaaaaay more than is needed for a three day trek. I'm 6'4 and I eat a lot! Did you share that with one or two others? Great vid btw.

  • This is my first time seeing this type of packaging. When you open the sugar up or any other pack you prepared, how do you keep the rest of the contents for the next meal? Or are these all just one meal items? You don't have any room for repackaging on the trail. Interesting method, it cuts your carry weight down tremendously. Thanks! wtr7

  • how long do you think the meals would last once they are in the vacuum sealed bags and put into a freezer?

  • Thanks for the very informative video. Do you ever have a problem with the bags getting cut by any sharp edges of the dehydrated veggies inside the bags, and letting air back in?

  • if you know what you are doing you can just use freezer bags.

  • WOW, you have a mountain house factory in your basement!!!

  • thanks for posting this i am getting some ideas now for some fully dehydrated meals . awesome

  • Very interesting video and very informative. I would have added some flavor to that meat as you cooked it. Some soya sauce and garlic for example. As well as adding some dried herbs to the vegetables. Adding some dry parsley, basil, thyme and rosemary. Doing something like that would take your 'nice' meal up to an outstanding meal.

  • 3lbs 2 oz?! You're my hero. lol Very cool. I just bought a food saver to pack some of our home raised meats in the freezer but I also have 4 boys (that's a lot of scout trips) that I'm sure will be thrilled to pack their meals just as you've shown. Thank you for the video. :)

  • that hambuger look hard like a rock

  • wont the hambuger go bad ?

  • Thanx Tinny, you've been a real inspiration with vacu sealin my homemade MRE's for both long & short term food storage,..The short term is for my trips out in the bush...Now i gotta get me a dehydrator & i'll be good to go !!!

  • Fantastic vid. Bro!! Thanks for sharing this valuable info....

  • 3 days? I could go 1 month with that

  • and how about the taste of these meals? probably cant compare it to fresh food, but how about store-bought hidrated meals? i find them awful and this would be perfect for me, if it still tastes okay=)

    tnx for a good video

  • what do you think as an estimate it cost to put all the food together for a three day outing? I would need to do this for three people and or 10 days...just looking to get an idea of cost....thanks.

  • Double Sher Technology Tinny Vary Smart Tinny

  • what about the cheese it dosnt go bad?

  • Very informative videos. I've seen a lot about dehydrating, packaging, etc, but very little on the proper way to re-hydrate various foods. Is that something contained at your site (haven't been there yet) or in one of your youtube videos? If not I think it would be a nice addition.

  • Most of that stuff you can use just a small sized ziplock bag that is reusable like I do if you cant afford a seal a meal.

  • the hamburger is that precooked or is it frezz dired

  • How much calories do you think one of those meal contains?

  • Could you post a video showing in detail how to properly rehydrate and cook this meal?

  • can you dehydrate pasta sauce then vacum seal it?

  • @iconhelmets yes you can

  • @chushinryoku thank you for telling me that

  • Good job, I had a problem with mine it punches holes in bag from my inside. Have a look at my ultra lite small pot DIY stove. thanks

  • looks tasty !

  • This is an awesome video. I would like to see several in detail on the same subject. I'm drying now, inspired by you. Tinny, let me tell you--you're authentic. A pleasure to watch.

  • thats cool

  • Hey tinny, how do you make those smaller bags? I assume you can get different size plastic?

  • How much hamburger is that in weight when hydrated/dry?

  • I never could get my seal a meal to seal.

  • This is GREAT!

Thankyou--this video was very well done (editing and clarity).

I would like to do this for a PCT through hike--but I'm from canada and I suspect the postal costs will outweigh any savings from making my own trail meals--however this looks much healthier than peanuts and KD!

  • This is not the way to get closer to nature. I'm sure you are a lovely man, but come on!

  • @MsMosquito9 what are you recommending, he eat leaves and bugs?

  • hy tinny you mind showing us how you cook your meals it would be so fun to see that too plze

  • never mind i should've finished the video before asking ! thx

  • aprox how many meals was this? just one big meal? or what ? GREAT VIDEO'S big fan!

  • What is the ratio water to food?

Is it half cup to cup or what?

    Thanks

  • It is about 1 to 1

  • Thank-you for making this video. It has been EXTREMELY helpful! I just got a dehydrator and am waiting for my vacuum sealer to arrive and I can hardly wait to get started making my meals!

    Thanks again!

  • Hey Tinny,

How come ya don't just store your meat with your veggies?

  • Because the meat take twice as long to cook

  • Meals Kill My weight limit Every Trip. This Was Helpful, I'm going to have to invest in A Dehydrator and Vac Sealer. Thanks for the Inspiration =)

  • A distributor called U-line sells poly tubing (8" x 1000') as you see in MREs. U-line also sells a simple heat sealer w/o vacuum. For some applications whether or not vacuum is not used, flushing the package with oil free nitrogen will displace O2. A company called Aline manufacturers high quality, expedition-grade, heat sealers, bag sealers, vacuum sealers, thermal impulse heat sealers, bundlers, shrink wrappers and heat sealing packaging, but you need an aircompressor and Oil Free N2.

  • The roll of bags you used said Food Saver? Can you use Food Saver roll with the Seal A Meal?

  • Yes

  • Thank you. I wanted to buy one, just didn't know if the other brand bags would work?

Thank you once again. I was wondering if a regular plastic ziploc bag would work?

    Anyway

    Thank you.

  • gosh, that is incredible! but talk about a lot of prep and work...

  • I take the cheese and crackers should be eaten on your first day out? But, then cheese is made in a warmer temp..maybe it Depends on the outside temp right? My fav is peanut butter filled crackers dipped in almond bark, then vac. packed....they last 2 weeks in any temp.. Thanks for the info..

  • I like to round off the corners of the bags after sealing them, too, which keeps those stiff corners from poking into gear or your fingers.

  • Thanks for the vids! Looks great, but will the cheese be ok if not dehydrated, or is it?

  • i like it. dont know about how the meat would taste, but i could imagine the vegetable making a nice soup.

  • Your videos rock! Thanks for all the great info!

  • video posted 6/9/07 of dehydrating food

  • Wow, this is awesome! Say goodbye to store bought hamburger helper, I'll bet this would save a ton of money on groceries if a person wanted to invest a little time dehydrating foods. Looks like I'm going to be eating better on hikes from now on.....................

  • That vacuum heat thing seems great.

I am surprised they don't sell them at camping stores.

  • they sell them at walmart :)

  • I love that method of sealing the middle for a connected meal. thanks for the demo

  • I have a Vac Seal A Meal and it's fantastic. I found mine at Walmart for 30.00. Most places sell them for 50.00 and up. Great investment.

  • lol he said smellevision. that's too funny.

  • sounds like a car it even shifts

  • one question... if you vacum seal the sugar, when you use it for the first time and open it how will you re seal it, zip lock bag maybe??

  • yeah, i'm starting to flyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy!!!!!!! (Linkin park)

  • Boo for having no taste in music.

  • you fly r/c?

  • how long will the cheese last? this might be a stupid question but is the cheese dehydrated too?

  • If you're worried about sharp edges piercing the bag, wrapping the food with a paper towel or two will make it more blunt against the bag. And you'll have a napkin, but that's what jeans are for!

  • How long can you keep the hamburger once you seal it in the bag?

  • A year

  • i think you should make these for a living!! so i can buy them lol! great ideas...and sound tastier than MRE's

  • Do you carry extra baggies to pack left overs of things like the bacon bits or anything that isn't eaten all at once? Or is everything consumed immediately once opened?

  • So cheerful. Great to watch your vids. I'd love to make some of these, I will have to start gathering the equipment to do it I guess.

  • Enough boiling water to cover it in a small container with a lid and about 10 minutes

  • how long and how much water do you use

  • how do you rehydrate it

  • let it soak in some hot water

  • Your video is a much better demo than the company's demo...we just got a seal a meal unit as a gift and it wasn't working right.. after watching your demo... now we got it.. Thank you so much.

  • what model sealer is that

  • Just a cheap walmart seal a meal

  • Roll it up and smoke it

  • Tinny this is JR from the adventures website does the cheese you vacummed sealed up last for awhile or is it something you make up prior to heading out on the trail?

  • I package it up just before --cheese doesn't last very long in warm weather---this batch was actually an experiment

  • I have very good success with Hamburger and have never had any go bad. I think the more fat you remove the better. Some people boil it for a few minutes after they fry it--but before they dry it. I also suspect a hot climate may make a big difference but still I am amazed at how stable it is. Then again the beef jerkey from shop and save is dated ahead for two years

  • Was curious about the longevity of the dehydrated ground beef. I read somewhere else that it needed to be frozen until use after dehydration or it could go rancid due to the fat content. I see you had no problem eating after fall/winter/spring. Guess I'll google it some more and see what else I can find on this... Great VIDS keep 'em rolling. Hike On...

  • I have wanted to get one of those food dryers for sooo long. Is there any food stuffs that doesnt de-hydrate well?

  • whole beans --because they don't rehydrate very well --some stuff with a lot of sugar will just get really sticky

  • Always good to know. Thanks mate.

  • would this food last as long if it weren't dehydrated first? and is the dehydrating just done for weight purposes?? thanks!

  • The shelf life of veggies and hamburger would be very short in your pack

  • Do you separate the meat just so you can re-hydrate it beforehand? Or are there other reasons for separating?

  • I keep the burger seperate because it needs to be added to the water first and allowed to soak and boil longer than everything else

  • re have a eal meale also we are going to start useing it again

  • Are you using hamburger rocks for the meat?

  • Very good Tinny! I know I heart my Food Vac ;-)

  • Thanks for the great video really enjoy this type of video this could be great to keep in the car for an emergency kit. WE never got our seal a meal to function as well as yours I think I was too cheap and didn't leave enough extra to work with. What brand bag do you recommend b/c I have been cooking a lot if I used the seal a meal I could make some frozen meals for my wife to take to work. You said seal a meal bags guess that is the brand of bag?

  • Yeah, seal-a-meal makes a continuous roll of make-it-yourself bags that should be available where seal-a-meal machines are sold. ie. Target, Walmart, or even some grocery stores

  • How much water do you add for one meal?

  • this has been a big issue with people. i always make soup so if the water is not perfect it is no big deal. I usually add enough boiling water to cover the meal and then add enough more water to bring it up 1/2 inch above the meal This works well but if I need a little more after it has rehydrated then I just add it. this is really easy and the food is great

  • one of the things i find usefull is bagbalm, it ain't food of course, but having that in a packed yourself first-aid kit can be a godsend, trouble is i can't get the small cans, i'm stuck with the 10oz. cans. if anybody has a line on the small cans of bagbalm drop me a line. thanks

  • Tivoli makes a great one

  • Very well done, thanks for posting this.

The 2-chamber idea is good/bad: convenient meal pouch but tougher to pack/protect.

I dedicate one sealer to food, and one to dirty things like sucking Permethrin insecticide into clothing fibers, sealing metal parts into oily bags, etc.

For a 2001 safari I was into Permethrin-treating clothes. Time to relearn that skill with West Nile and other serious bug-borne diseases growing in the USA now.

  • I dried some of this hamburger last summer and packaged it up in a ziplock with a spaghetti dinner . it sat inside a case in the back of my truck all fall winter and spring until I cleand out the case and ate the spaghetti dinner --it was still good

  • great vid..i wish i had a sealer. i have dried burger in the fridge. how long with that last

  • Tinny what type/make/model of vacuum sealer do you recommend?

  • This is a walmart seal a meal

  • Thanks already figured it out and picked one up. Much better than what I was using.
