@CEOkiller She got it from Keith. Keith borrowed it from a guy at work. There is reference to this earlier in the movie when Watts in playing with her drums sticks in the garage and is hitting the car. It is under a tarp and Keith tells her that the guy loves the car more than life.

By the way, the reason i mentioned The Gilmore Girls was because it depicts high society parents and their kids, it does not really deal with the gap between those kids and other kids too much. Lorelei (the mother) rebels against high society to live in "low society" with her daughter....until it's times to go to Yale.
But like I said, it's really more of a depiction of the 80's (when the writer of the series grew up) then when it was set (the present).
To understand 80's teen movies you have to understand social class.
The Amanda character is actually an "in betweener" . They indicate in the beginning of the film that she does not entirely belong with the high society kids, but they give her a pass to hang out with them because she is dating one of them, is considered beautiful/classy, and her family is probably atleast sort of well off.
The caviar scene here is another clue that is supposed to show that she doesn't quite belong there.

Watts is exceptionally classy and kick ass in her chauffeur attire, the looks suits her well. Sort of looks like the stuff the kids are wearing now yet she pulls it off cause she's doing something original.
Ya know, I kinda agree with the father a little. He's spending all that money just to impress a girl who doesn't deserve it OR appreciate. He's got more class than she and her friends.
I wouldn't say no to either Keith or Watts in this film. I feel this doubles my enjoyment of the film. I just like when either of them is on screen. Best is when they're together.

if keith earned all that money himself, then technically he's the richest kid. doesn't really count if your parents bought you everything and you didn't work to earn a dime of it.

Back then they lived in two different worlds. The rich kids lived in "High society" and submitted to their parents and to the rules of that world. This is much less common now. Gilmore Girls was a modern attempt to depict this. In reality, the show was more representative of the writers own time then the present .
