I know I'll get alot of flak for this, but I'm just being straight here.

The character development and story in this game is fundamentally flawed and at this rate it looks like SquareEnix has 2 options: (1) totally reinvent the series or (2) put the "final" in the final fantasy series and move on to something else.

I'll stick with RPG's that have solid storylines and characters, like Mass Effect for example, until SquareEnix decides to do something better. Pretty graphics is not enough.

@vlweb3d this actually was the reinvent, it didn't pan out too well what with all the linearity and the lack of the airship to travel back to places in order to farm/power-level. Also Cutscenes weren't so abound in the past, I guess that's because ugly graphics made them wary.

This storyline is actually pretty solid and the characters are quite fleshed out. Mass Effect has a bunch of cliche stock characters with a really generic storyline. But you Americans were never keen on originality.

Mass Effect story isn't supposed to be a character driven one. Its based around the universe its created and concentrates more on bringing that to life. Something FF has failed to do in this game. Cloud 2.0 = Lighting

FF has always been Character driven but the worlds were usually more lively than this. FFX had a great world IMO and it had the same tunnel vision design as this. A good setting can help make the characters more interesting because their motivations are directly tied in to whats happening in the world around them. FFXIII's characters' motivations barely even tie into whats happing in the world for the most part and, as a result, don't feel connected to it.

I havent been watching the whole playthrough, but I get if people dont really get the story by only viewing the cutscenes and dialog. The characters speak about l'Cie, Fal'Cie, Purge, Pulse, Focus and other stuff like its the most natural thing, but they dont explain what each thing is, hence the confusion. I had to read the first 7-8 events and I pretty much get it. Reading like this shouldnt really be necessary, but I dont regret it one bit, as I actually get to follow the story now :P

No, the problem is that the ONLY way to truely grasp the story is by reading the Datalog entries which SHOULDN'T be nessasary. They should be able to tell the story through actual cutscenes and the datalog should serve as a means of making the world feel more alive. Look at the Codex for Mass Effect. It accomplished that perfectly and Phil praised it for that. The problem with this game is its too zoned in on it melodramatic characters and not enough on whats actually happening in the world.

Furthermore, any idiot could comprehend the this story. Anything confusing about the story has nothing to do with a lack of comprehension. It has to do with lack of good story telling. I was intrigued by the concept here, but its not being handled well at all. Lost Odessy had an equally if not more abstract concept and they managed to tell the story just fine. No excuse FFXIII to not do the same. And that's coming from someone who LOVES this game so far. (except the ho-hum emo story)

i wanted to buy this game but after watching up to video 42 of this playthrough I bought tales of vesperia instead. it has nothing to do with phil's gameplay or commentary(only reason i'm still watching) it's just the story plot seems to have been put together by two middle school kids. add the music and you got a very graphical sailor moon game. the guys are all weak(snow getting slapped around by light and fang) or gay(hope nough said) and the girls are super strong...

Depends on how much time you have on your hands, really. It's an extremely long game. I'm at around 16 hours right now and not even close to halfway done. Also depends on your patience, lol. I'd say see how like Tales of Vesperia. If you -really- enjoy it, then this is worth at least a rent. But if you're kinda meh on ToV, this one will make you cry.

Actually the story isn't complicated. There is "Pulse": its a "underworld/hell"(at least everyone in cocoon thins so). Cocoon and Pulse were centurys ago in a war with each other. Now the cocoonpeople are afraid of the "Pulse". Also there are these godlike creatures: the Fal'cie. They created cocoon and pulse. The ones which look over/protect cocoon are Cocoon-Fal'cie and wich "rule" in Pulse, are Pulse-Fal'cie. Also there are minor Fal'cie, which don't care for the humans.
