@EqualAndFree they calculate it from the effects the planets have on a parent star. they can deduce many planets sizes, and positions of orbit just from the gravitational tugs they have, they can also calculate from magnitude changes in the star if the star systems orbits are side on from our view

Math, that's how they know the size of the planets and their speed at the moment of impact.

They have a method of determining the diameter of the planet, the same method that a greek scholar used once (cannot remember the name at the moment.) However its different, they basically look at a star with a telescope, and they see the shadows of the planet, and then they calculate distances and whatnot.
