One note worth mentioning, had Osborne taken the easy way out and kicked the point after it's not 100% certain that the Huskers would have won the National Title. The press and coaches in the polls ALWAYS had a problem with teams taking the "cowards" way out.

Having said that if Nebraska doesn't go for 2 and takes the kick and the tie they would have likely eliminated Miami as National Champs, (it would have been Oklahoma's year,) but the Huskers wouldn't have won it either.

@nwana1977 Notre Dame took the easy way out in the 60's, (a bizarre incident where they quit playing so their opponent could get a fast TD so they could get the ball back and salvage a win,) and the coaches and writers' polls snubbed them for it.

Had Osborne kicked his single and taken his tie I think it would have yielded a weak National Champion because neither Miami or Nebraska would have won it that year as a result.

believe it or not there was a day everyone loved the Hurricanes. This was the greatest college game I ever saw and everyone was in the corner of the Hurricanes. They had the love and respect of the nation.

But the result would have been the same. Same yardage, automatic first down. The NCAA said the same. Just accept the fact that you lost to the better team. It's not like you should be ashamed to lose to Ohio State in overtime.

I have always liked Nebraska and Miami. The Huskers probably never faced a passing attack like Miami's, maybe the Canes were the perfect team to beat Nebraska. Notice was served by the Miami athletes. They could play with anyone and they just needed a coach to bring them together as they went on an amazing run over the next 15 or so years.

Freakish. Nebraska was unbeatable that year. Schnellenberger has never got the credit (ala Holtz, Saban, etc.) that he deserves. Those Huskers were awesome- and I hated them! But fair is fair. A QB number 20 (you gotta be kiddin me...) made the upset of all times, and Auburn was left holding the bag. '83 was a hoot! Almost as crazed as '77, '73 and...this year!
