@michaelmckay like i am a guitarist and i played the piece. ohh not to mention that the tempo written is faster. i am just saying it's bad it's just not mature, if you listen to many great guitarists u can tell that his rythm and tempo in the first 2 parts is off! just that. he was an excellent sound but as i said not quite mature , in this recording!
I have recordings of Barrios. I guarantee that it sounds like allegro solenne Yamashita, maybe even faster. Therefore, besides the unquestionable technical skill, Kazuhito is also careful to interpret the spirit of the author.
Whatever else may be said about this man's playing one thing is undeniable and that is that he dances to no-one's tune but hs own. This is something all too rare in classical guitar and he should be applauded for this factor alone. He also happens to be a superlative player.
I must say he plays the last part much to fast for my taste. I think playing it so fast is very impressive (I know how hard it is), but it takes away the emotion and feeling for me. It seems as if the whole last part is one big piece which has to be played as fast as you can, while it can be dividided in seperate pieces.
@HitokiriDiaz I have recordings of Barrios. I guarantee that it sounds like allegro solenne Yamashita, maybe even faster. Therefore, besides the unquestionable technical skill, Kazuhito is also careful to interpret the spirit of the author.
When I started listening to this interpretation, I really liked it, especially because it was different as the ones I already heard. At first it was hard to try and feel his emotion because I wasn't used to the first part being played so slowly, but it worked for me.
I turned the volume up to listen to his range of dynamics and was very impressed with his control. The tempo is faster than most interpretations but I found it to be very tasteful. I don't understand why he has so many detractors. Is it because he's Asian? you can't play scales and arpeggios as fast as Kazuhito? I'm an amateur guitarist and I admire his technique and think that he has excellent interpretive skills.
Courtney, your appreciation of Barrios´ intentions is very accurate, I agree with it. In fact, Barrios, as most of us, loved Bach. But believe me, there is absolutely no feeling in Yamashita´s interpretation, I would dare to say, in any piece he plays. I advice you to hear his version of Bach´s Partita BWV 1001 to see how he tries to show himself technically instead of really taking advantage of Bach´s conceptions. I think that here it´s pretty much the same...
@diegoarboli Come on diegoarboli... first watch "Kazuhito Yamashita plays his favorites" dvd and then after you record all 80 cds he recorded, speak. if you don´t like this version, please make a better one and enlighten all of us with your tasty phrasing and delicate touch. Now, I don´t like EVERY yamashita´s recordings, but I think this version is full of his fire and that´s his "emotion" speaking, listen to those dynamics my friend! and also listen to his rendition of Hungarian Rhapsody...
@insaneguitarfreak I hate it when people puts words in somebody else´s mouth. HAVE I SAID THAT I AM A BETTER GUITAR PLAYER THAN YAMASHITA? Regarding technical resources, used with right and wrong concepts, there is probably no other like him. HAVE I SAID THAT I HAVE A LOT OF RECORDINGS AND THAT MAKES ME A GREAT GUITAR PLAYER? I can record in my pc thousands of things and that will never make me better or worse than anybody! HAVE I SAID THAT I HAVE A TASTY PHRASING AND DELICATE TOUCH?
@diegoarboli I HAVEN´T EVEN SAID THAT I PLAY THIS PIECE BETTER OR WORSE THAN YAMASHITA!!!!! I HAVEN´T EVEN COMPARED HIM WITH OTHER GUITARISTS! When you talk about guitarist of that level, you CAN´T say that this version is better than the other one. But what you CAN do, and what I am doing here, is say why you like or why you don´t like a particular version. Your concepts to see a piece really have to be checked out. An advice: listen to Williams´ or Barrueco´s or Balbi´s versions,
@diegoarboli I listened to Eduardo Fernandez playing it, (the one I like most, and the first i heard), Ana Vidovic, Denis Azabagic, John Williams, Berta Rojas, Shinichi Fukuda, Philippe Lemaigre, and I used to play it myself on a duet with a friend of mine at the university of La Plata.
@diegoarboli "there is absolutely no feeling in Yamashita´s interpretation," You are a retard. There is no correct way to play any classical music, IT'S ALL INTERPRETATION, the snob talentless morons who critique virtuosos are so foolish & of a silly nature it's ridiculous to comment further. You are entitled to your opinions like everyone else, but some are just more practical in time & space & based on reality. He shows more feeling & energy than any other classical guitarist on youtube.
Gentlemen. With all respect to Yamashita, "Allegro Solemne" is NOT about a musical machine gun bursting a series of notes. It´s just like when he played the Fugue of Bach´s Partita BWV 1001. He might be the fastest most accurate note striker, but there are intentions to be seen in every piece, and in this version, not only are they not seen, but they are also disposed. Don´t get interpretation misunderstood as virtuosity!
What a fantasic performance of Agustin's masterpiece. I think I prefer this version to the one of John Williams, the dynamics are just more expressive in this one(wouldn't expect that from an asian guitarist :P).
Thank you for uploading these pieces! In my country (Japan), we will not gain the CD containing this music any more, because the item hasn't been produced for many years.
the tempo in general isn't right, not a very mature interpretation
