It would affect the audience more if one of the more lovable characters died. OP and Bee? They were needed in the sequel, so guess who was the next awesomest one. 2. Megatron did not pick on Jazz just because he was smaller- he went for him because Jazz was trying to distract him from attacking Ironhide and Ratchet. Jazz died a heroic death.
