At the Maine Discovery Museum in Bangor, Maine there is a hands-on demonstration of this. The funnel is not used only 3 separate hoses. It is one of the most used demonstration. Without the funnel I would not expect to be able to invert the hose.
Venturi effect: The enlargment of the funnel reduces the pressure of air so the atmospheric pressure is greater than the fan's and it pushes against the ping pong
ball and against gravity.
Bernoulli's principle: When air travels faster, its pressure lowers then the atmospheric pressure pushes on the the two sheets.

If the air pressure was greater, the ball would fly off the funnel, not stay in it. Learn some physics before commenting.
