Still my favourite song for so many years now. Haven't known the translation(s) for long though, so thank you very much. Makes me remember the Yukon territory and Champaigne Aishihik Community, where I first listened to it on the radio.
Oh, by the way, "hell" was translated rather wrong from the pre-christian cultures. Means "tomb" . Hel in the nordic languages is related and it's just like the place where the dead go to spend the afterlife. Nobody will go to "hell" in a christian sense.
@jessetok3s i dunno what language u r speaking. what i meant is the ppl with that kind of blood on their hands will suffer greatly. and considering all the ppl who have watched all these massacres take place and did nothing about it or supported them, then yes hell will be overcrowded indeed.
@TheMundo2012 Você está errado. Esta canção foi escrita por Pura Fé Crescioni Antonia, que é indiana Tuscarora e Taino. Ele foi escrito na língua Tutelo-Saponi.
No matter what the real translation is. If you listen to it, you must recognize it is real music, that comes straight from the heart and it goes deep down to the bottom of your soul. Thx for sharing it with us! I love it!
This made me cry and remember my grandfather Olan Booher. He was married to the great granddaughter of Geronimo (his second wife). When he died in 1984 the Apache indians of the Mescalero Reservation of New Mexico performed the feather dance and would not allow white man touch his body for three hours - so that his soul could join the Great Spirit. He was the only white man that held that honor during that time that I can remember.
it is so tragic what happened to the native american's culture and how much of it has been lost to to forced conformation. This music reminds us how much beauty there was.
It is a true shame that the white conquerors did not care for the beauty and diversity of Native cultures. But I am also amazed and grateful for the few gorgeous fragments that remain.
beleave it or not!!! but when i was back in the 8th grade me and two of my friends were gonna sing this song for the talent show and the white teachers told us NO!!! they said that we were singing bad stuff about them. yeah i know carzy huh? so we didnt get to sing it in the end. boy was are parents really mad. and wee sounded so good!!!
@ NativeHotMa....Wow that's really sad...this song is so beautiful only ignorant people would see anything reprehensible in it. Hope you guys had a good time learning the lyrics despite professor Party pooper.
NativeHotMa that really sucks. I hate the ignorance of some whites. I'm white but I love the native people. I have a faint trace of Brule blood in me from a great great grandfather but I wish it was more. You should gather your friends and record this beautiful song.
Go Yaqui....oh yeah and the other native ladies that were singing too...lol...hahahaha..just kidding. All natives are kool....We are all one people cept for the Ojibs who this belongs too..my wife, Just kidding babe. Her husband...another Yaqui joker. Michael
the most beautiful music in this video along with the Native American energy will stir your soul... I had chills and reverence throughout... I would like to find out the meaning of the words though word translations often are simply "labels". Perhaps its is the music itself that transcends our limited language into a Universal one that All understand.
Very beautful and the song to even that i not understand...American indian people suffered greatly and survived the evil..for us to we suffer and pray we survive to.
A friend kind of dragged me to a concert of Ulali's about ten years ago. I didn't know of them and didn't expect much but their music, and especially this song, blew me away. I still love it. Glad to see someone put it on here
I think your facts are wrong. The Band's (Robbie Robertson is an original member) website says otherwise. It was written by Pura Fe, Soni, and Jen and the English translation I posted is the correct one. YouTube won't let me post any web addresses, but you can google robbie robertson and it should the third website down, or you can message me for the link.
Robbie Robertson was NOT a member of Ulali...he just put together a compilation of different native american artists...and Ulali had two songs on it. my facts are right...check your email to see why!
Correct, Robbie Robertson was a member of The Band (that's its name), not Ulali. However, as you said, he did put together a compilation album that had this song on it, and the lyrics are on the website I mentioned. I'm not here to argue about this song, ok? You can believe the lyrics are whatever you want, that's your prerogative.
@shopmanguru You are correct. Those are the right lyrics. Robbie Robertson didn't write the song, "Toni" Pura Fé Antonia Crescioni wrote it! Robbie only recorded it together with Ulali. He is mistakenly given credit for having written it, which bothers Toni a lot, since she's the true author!
I love this. This is my most fav Ulali. I taught it to my little sister. I saw these women about 6 years ago and they were great. MY sister likes it, she always just lays down and closes her eyes. It's really great.
I'm not Native American myself, but I wanted to learn some Native American language back then, but due to virtually no coursebooks available, I couldn't. But I had the book on sign language, by... William Tomkins, I think. Anyone ever had this book too?
I first heard this album when I was about 19. A friend from Ohio sent it to me. I had been interesteed in Native American culture for some time back then and to me personally, I'm not a music critic, but to me it was deep and moving something in me, some strings. Even after so many years, this music still stirs in me those emotions.
I would always play this song in my car on the long commute home, and by the time I was home, I was mellow. I have cherished this song for several years now and I encourage everyone to buy the cd music for native americans by robbie robertson. It is a beautiful album.
Ulali sings it, they have an album that is called Mahk Jchi as well, but the version on that album is different from this one, but by no means worse ;)
I like the one on the album better. Its more organic, if thats a correct term? This is the one from Robbie Robertson's CD. Its good too, but a little over produced. I wish these girls were still together! What a lost to native music!
You inspire me to want to learn my native languages. I ordered a book, now I need to buy a dictionary and ask the ancestors to aid me. There is no one around to teach me my language. My people have been completely domesticated... that's why they are going crazy. Hold on to things that are yours.. having your own is very special. Not everyone is so fortunate. Some have to dig and recreate anew from things in the past, while others casually disregard what they have.
I would think the same as you, Yavie. It's important to remember where you come from and take pride in it. Beauty is in the difference too, and knowing where you come from and embracing it, gives you a little bit more of self awarness I think

@rumiwacho According to "Toni" - Pura Fé Antonia Crescioni - who wrote the song, this is the CORRECT translation (in the Tutelo-Saponi language):
Our hearts are full and our minds are good
Our ancestors come and give us strength
Stand tall, sing, dance and never forget
Who you are or where you come from
(There's another "translation" out there, but the person who WROTE the song says THIS is the correct one.)
