I just find that the Roman period from 500bc on to 496 less or more..is so romanticized so in western education there is little bit of an aneddote. but the empire lasted until 1453, this guy says it the best "all that made Rome geat was brought to that city."...that by its end made modern europe explode with new ideas. I dont think it would be disputed if the books and alll that wealth from one city....lit up the western world with fFIRE and science , philosophy, ..La Renaissance
If it were not for the byzantines the middle east and the rest of the world would be living in the dark ages still.. Christian Europe created the modern world !! muslims had nothing to do with it...accept the truth or be ignorant...
The medieval period had to occur, the barbarians, the goths, vandals, the Huns, did not care about literature nor good government. The Eastern Roman Empire protected all the great works of the ancient world and copied them multiple times...such books from Ptolemy,Plato, Aristotle, Homer were preserved until the West was ready for them. Not only did they preserve knowledge, It was Byzantium that stood in the way of the Persians and the muslim armies blocking them from conquering Christian Europe.
@exitre due to your recent comment I understand that your mad, so I will just leave you to it. Good luck with that sir, and may god give you a brain some day.
My interests are ancient Greco-Roman history. I went to a seminar in Germany to hear a renown historian speak on the supposition of what modern life would be like had not the Western empire fall. He gave a very convincing scenario that had the dark ages not occurred we probably would have had space flight by 1790.
And I think America would still be here. There would have been enough normal social squabbling that people would have left Europe to N.America
The truth good or bad... whatever that old blind doge of Venice (pirate/thug) of western europe thought, probably jealousy and plunder and possibly the others could smell the decay of the byzantine empire, that its days were numbered...Even before the betrayal of the 4th crusade, the turks were encroaching and occupying most of Anatolia ... The fall of the city was terribly sad but the knowledge and wisdom that flew out of it created the modern world.
We should take back our great city . The muslims have Mecca ...this is our city as Christians not Rome. Through Constantinople, Christianity was transformed from an ideology to a world religion. While the barbarians where carving up Europe and Rome ...Constantinople stood tall as a beacon of light to the world and the custodian of ancient knowledge. The fall led to the renaissance there is no doubt...Hence the birth of western culture and civilization. The dream is alive, gaining momentum...
If Tsar Nicolas hadn't been such a weakling, he would have taken his cousin's advice (Kaiser Wilhelm II) and retaken Constantinople while Germany was willing to stay out, mediate or possibly join Russia. Of course Jews controlling Britain and France's finances, would have joined the Ottomans out of fear of a united Christendom. If World War I had been Germany allied with the Baltic states, Russia and Germany intimidating Catholic Austria into neutrality; history would have been different.
I blame the Catholics more for the fall of Constantinople than I do the Ottomans. Rome had committed all sorts of heresies against the faith only to concentrate power back into Rome with the Pope acting as the new Caesar. Roman Catholicism has been and will always be heretical and pagan. I thank Russia and the Czars for preserving God's true word and faith when no one else would. European barbarians sacked the city and then stood idle while Asiatic hordes transformed the Hagia Sophia into trash.
my heart bleeds for Constantinople in muslim hands, when it fell in 1453 just 7,000 men fought to defend it against 200,000 turks with monster bombards & huge basilisks, too few men to defend such vast city especially against those numbers.
@aporia82 what happened in 1204? thats one of the main reasons why the ottomans could take constantinople, because after the 1204 siege Byzantium never recovered to its full strenght, the turks just took the opportunity of Byzantium on its knees, thats what happened. & yes i do compare it with the ottomans siege, the Latins were some 20,000 besiegeing some 30,000 byzantines not like the turkish 200,000 against just 7,000.
@Suppressingfire To be fair, the government in Constantinople was incredibly naieve in 1204, allowing a fully equipped modern siege army to camp under their walls, having promised them money, and refusing to pay up.
Alexios III was not a very clever man, and you could argue that they were asking for it, at the time.
On the other hand, without the initial fall of the city you'd never have had the flowering of Byzantine culture in the form of the successor states.
ya know, if all the wars of the world stopped, then the money could be better put to used reconstructing every, stress every, emperial and other great capitol in the world. such a waste in destruction, rather than constructing beauty
I can't believe that someone would actually post what you have RideMyBMW and try to claim that they are any kind of a christian. I mean, we are all guilty of sin but to act that way in the same sentance in which you profess your supposed christianity is shameful at best. No wonder people hate christians based on a predisposition of hipocracy. It people like you that tarnish the face of the religion.
Hey, Tovarich Crackhead, did you know that at 2:55 of this video you can briefly see the birthplace of Karl Marx? I saw it once. In 1988 it was a camera shop, probably operated by running dog, recidivist capitalist pigs. It's right on the square near the Porta Negra in Trier!

@Verdillac2 You are being demagogue. Hell, there would be NO secular science today, if there was no religious organization preserving knowledge during Great Migration.
There also would be NO secular science, if not allowed to develop in safety of walled christian cities.
I´m not Christian myself, but still admire archievements of Church, which for the first time in history gave sense of co-belonging to Europeans.

Abolish Slavery? Christians had no problem with Slavery.
Civilize three Continents? Define "Civilized"
Put a Man on the Moon? It would have happened much sooner by hundreds of years had The Church not tortured and murdered and persecuted Scientists.
Typical Christian Delusional Attitude
