The medieval period had to occur, the barbarians, the goths, vandals, the Huns, did not care about literature nor good government.The Eastern Roman Empire protected all the great works of the ancient world and copied them multiple times...such books from Ptolemy,Plato, Aristotle, Homer were preserved until the West was ready for them. Not only did they preserve knowledge, It was Byzantium that stood in the way of the Persians and the muslim armies blocking them from conquering Christian Europe.

My interests are ancient Greco-Roman history. I went to a seminar in Germany to hear a renown historian speak on the supposition of what modern life would be like had not the Western empire fall. He gave a very convincing scenario that had the dark ages not occurred we probably would have had space flight by 1790.

And I think America would still be here. There would have been enough normal social squabbling that people would have left Europe to N.America

The truth good or bad... whatever that old blind doge of Venice (pirate/thug) of western europe thought, probably jealousy and plunder and possibly the others could smell the decay of the byzantine empire, that its days were numbered...Even before the betrayal of the 4th crusade, the turks were encroaching and occupying most of Anatolia ... The fall of the city was terribly sad but the knowledge and wisdom that flew out of it created the modern world.

If Tsar Nicolas hadn't been such a weakling, he would have taken his cousin's advice (Kaiser Wilhelm II) and retaken Constantinople while Germany was willing to stay out, mediate or possibly join Russia. I blame the Catholics more for the fall of Constantinople than I do the Ottomans. Rome had committed all sorts of heresies against the faith only to concentrate power back into Rome with the Pope acting as the new Caesar. Roman Catholicism has been and will always be heretical and pagan. I thank Russia and the Czars for preserving God's true word and faith when no one else would. European barbarians sacked the city and then stood idle while Asiatic hordes transformed the Hagia Sophia into trash.

@aporia82 what happened in 1204? thats one of the main reasons why the ottomans could take constantinople, because after the 1204 siege Byzantium never recovered to its full strenght, the turks just took the opportunity of Byzantium on its knees, thats what happened. & yes i do compare it with the ottomans siege, the Latins were some 20,000 besiegeing some 30,000 byzantines not like the turkish 200,000 against just 7,000.

@Suppressingfire To be fair, the government in Constantinople was incredibly naieve in 1204, allowing a fully equipped modern siege army to camp under their walls, having promised them money, and refusing to pay up.

Alexios III was not a very clever man, and you could argue that they were asking for it, at the time.

On the other hand, without the initial fall of the city you'd never have had the flowering of Byzantine culture in the form of the successor states.
