When I finally met Chris Connor, a lifelong dream, I told her she had changed many lives with her music. She told me she'd heard that many times and read it many times in her fan mail and she appreciated it. I don't know what I expected but in a way she proved a surprise. Not some hip jazz singer but a very all-American sweetheart type, lovely and calm, totally natural a really with no trace of show business in her persona. And beautiful! She knocked me out!
She actually did two recordings of "All About Ronnie" with Kenton. The American single was the second session; the first went on several Japanese C.D.s. She then did the song for Bethlehem, then recorded it live for Atlantic and then did a studio version for Atlantic that got released only in Japan. Every version was different!
You an' me Jazz4Joe; you an' me....Remember that "blazing" interlude in the middle of the song when Maynard Fergusen played? Funny how it seems that certain people were "born" to sing certain songs? ( A case in point; Jackie Paris and, "Skylark"..............) miss her...Andre Black
Just heard this on my local NPR station (KCLU). Seemed very familiar, so when I searched and saw the name, Chris Conner, it dawned on me that this was something my parents would listen to when I was very young, early sixties. I 'm finding the same is true when I hear others, then I find it's Stan Getz or Asrtud Gilberto or Charlie Bird, or... Beginning to re-discover some great sounds.
Just been listening to Something Cool, a great tune by the misty miss Christy. This is also a big favourite of mine. A great time for great music, indeed. Respect to you all
My, my, Stan Kenton sure had some fine singers in his time, ( Anita o' day, the misty miss Christy and Chris Connor of course). All 3 were considered the epitome of cool jazz singers, ( along with Julie London). What must it have been like to be around at the time ? One can only wonder
I commented here about seven months ago. Her "All About Ronnie" is truly a classic among jazz aficionados. Now she's gone but she'll live forever in her recordings. Such a dynamite singer!
Great tune to listen to late at night

Ha, and I just realized I spelled Byrd wrong. I guess I'm always reminded of his album covers.

Kenton apparantly favored a particular type vocalist.....I think Billie Holliday would have done well with his band.

Lovely song. Lovey singer. Chris made my young adult years more meaningful than it would have been, without her recordings. Miss her.

While Miss Christy is still THE cool school grand dame, Chris was really good.

She really sounds like June Christy, and took over for June in Stan Kentons band.
