So that's why we have uninteresting names such as New Amsterdam/New York, New Hampshire, Western Australia, New South Wales, Newfoundland and of course, Greenland.
@blenderpanzi That is supposedly the tale, but another interesting theory is that since the climate during the middle ages was as warm as today on Greenland, but over a long period of time, the ice on Greenland was actually farther inland, leaving the coastal areas with plains of grass.
A third possibility is a combination of both of them. Hehe. What is true, though, is that Vikings often had a sarcastic and ironic sense of humor about things they said or did :P
@elgostine Yes, the guy I replied to mentioned this. The tale is that Eirik Raude called it Greenland to attract settlers to the island, but it was written down 2-300 years after its discovery, and it could easily be the author's joke as well as Eirik's own, since it's widely recorded that vikings all over Scandinavia frequently exercised a deeply sarcastic and ironic sense of humor. Since it's not unlikely it was a literary joke, there exists other theories, like the one I mentioned.
Great sketch but they've kind of missed the point of New South Wales as a name. South refers to australia's position on the globe and the only likeness to Wales implied by the name is in the colony's political relationship with England.
Yes 'South' refers to the Australia's position, but why 'New'?? I checked on wiki and other sources and Captain Cook did name that land because of Wales on British islands....hmmm but bloody hell why ?? :)
@MegaMat84 The coastline of NSW looks vaguely similar to South Wales ... kind of. If you twist it around a bit and squint. Apparently that's the first thing Cap'n Cook thought of.
"...Lush subtropical plains as far as the eye can see, it's 90 degrees in the shade even though it's November, there are herds of 7 foot tall two-legged creatures bouncing across the landscape at tremendous speeds, do you know where it reminds me of? Wales!"
That's funny you say That Mitchell and Webb Look is patchy. I've watched all 3 series a couple of times, and find it consistently funny, unlike many sketch shows which can be hit and miss. Suppose it's all personal taste, but I think they are brilliant.
I always thought it was kind of awkward, having your business all geographically out there. I'll bet if it were the opposite, they wouldn't have called it "Whoria" lol
Well yes... it is a bit forthright about the sexual status of their queen. Virginia: like a giant state-sized personal ad. "She's a virgin! We've named a land after this fact and therefore it is so. Just line up, all you kingly suitors." Especially galling if it's not, perhaps, one-hundred-percent particularly true. Why not call it Elizabethland? Tudoria?
more proof that she didn't have sex than then there is she did. you said it yourself, sex before marriage was unimaginable back then so why would she do it.
well if she was a head of her time wouldnt she admit to it, i mean she was the queen so its not like she would be shamed. i mean henry the 8th created a religion and everyone in england just went along with it regardless of what there previous church said.
It didn't have so much to do with 'sex before marriage' as it did to do with her never having married or having any kids. Plus the nickname of her time, "The Virgin Queen" does lend a certain element of trust don't you think.
Look at THOOSE costumes. The Brits always have the best costume makers in televition, and that´s a fact. These are three scetches and they all have more inpressive costumes than any American series I know. Seriously, the "Blackadder" series alone does better than "Marie Antoinette" BURN!!!!!
@mxgirl918 Western Australia?
Do you mean the western end of Australia?
That's like saying South America is unoriginal.

I think Greenland was named by exiled vikings that wanted to make it look (sound) attractive to more settlers, or something.

Actually Greenland was named like that as part of a scam by Erik the Red to attract settlers to his new discover land.

basically, she never had sex you spastic child. you don't have to always avoid that word.(you know, sex)
themanfromhell24 2 years ago
There's no proof she never had sex, and most likely, she did.
However, because she had no HEIR, she was considered a virgin, as sex outside of marriage back then was considered to be unimaginable.
