Actually if you listen to Randy speaking in interviews on the internet, he explains he keeps the distortion+ on basically ALL OF THE TIME, NOT just solos!! Yes, he "boosted" the mids on the MXR to "cut thru the mix" NO, the signature amp does NOT include reverb (or any FX) nor a built-in FX loop. However, I hate all these fucking demos because the assholes that put them together or when demoing an amp will lead you to believe it's ALL amp. Yes, listen at ~2:50 in when he ends his riff

I'd just like to say great job by Paul. He nailed the playing and tone down as much as possible. I wanted to point out that I'm virtually 100% positive this is NOT "all amp"! Why?? Well I own one of the G-D things and cannot get the tone! Further, I'm an amp build and have an ear. If I am correct, he's slamming it with a pedal (probably Distortion+), may have the mids up/EQ (like Randy), and lastly, LISTEN to when he stops say at 2:50. Do you hear reverb or slight delay effect?? Hmmmm
i keep seeing these "doesnt sound like his tone" comments..i think it sounds pretty damn close to it personally. the cab doesnt have the same speakers randy used, so the sound wont be identical. i dont think his tone could ever be matched perfectly..RIP

@bisensee420 the guitar is obviously a gibson les paul custom but the pickups are (from what i think) are a 490R and 498T.same as mine. but when hes soloing he doesnt have the mxr m104 distortion plus soo.. and randy had the stock pickups of his 74 custom (i would reaaaaaaally like to know what pickups those were specifically, if u or any1 else you kno knows please tell me)

Hey, it's nice but May's red special is nice too - how many times do we have to go over that? Learn electronics..learn luthierism. It's disturbing to me when people want an amp or guitar or an effect pedal so they can "sound" like someone. You have to learn the licks first! Hell, I can play a great version of Dee with a cheap Tijuana nylon six string, if it stays in tune! Learn the chops first....then make your own head, cab, guitar, whatever! This amp won't make you a better player!

Paul actually slips a run from the solo of Revelation (Mother Earth) into the demo. It's slightly different, but damn close. These heads were sold out before they even hit the store shelves. I know, I was number 7 in line at my local store. The four that were shipped to my local went to one thru four. One of them tried to then turn around and sell it for a $1000 more to me. If I only had the cash...

Besides he said in the begining he couldnt play Randys stuff do to copy right. If he mimics his sound too much... same lawsuit. Dont tell me it cant happen either. John Foggerty was sued by his former record companty for Plagerizing himself, because as a solo artist he sounded too much like CCR.
@VH5150MetallicaFan You would have to do the cascade mod to the high Normal input. That's all it is. If you want it cheap then just get a Ceriatone JMP 50 or 100 and do the mod to it. If you build it yourself and get an Avatar 2x12 cab you could have the whole stack for about $1000.
@VH5150MetallicaFan Use google. Ceriatone (you can buy one of their amps built or as a kit), Weber, Triode Electronics, and lots of other places have good kits. They are kits, so you have to make them. Tube amps are dangerous it you don't know what you're doing so do a lot of research if you decide on a kit. Avatar (google Avatar cabs) makes good cabs at a low price, or a Marshall 1960 if you have the money. I don't know of any amps that are already made (other than Ceriatone) for this sound.
@VH5150MetallicaFan I don't know. I've heard some bad things about them breaking, starting fires, blowing up, etc. But I've also heard that they are a lot better now and more reliable. I've never used it so I really don't know. I don't think it has the same circuit though. And I know it doesn't have as good transformers.

@VH5150MetallicaFan It was a non-master volume JMP 100 watt Super Lead circuit with the gain stages cascaded into each other. He went to the Marshall factory and asked them to make it for him in white. I don't know what they did with this amp, but it doesn't sound like Randy's tone to me at all. I have Blizzard of Oz and the Randy Rhoads Tribute on tape. He sounded a lot better live than in the studio, IDK what they did to his sound in the studio. You will also need an MXR Distortion + and EQ.

Personally I think the stock side sounded more "Randy like" and Randy used an MXR Distortion + and an EQ and an Echoplex(which also adds an interesting overtone)... look at his old pedalboard pics -but just get an old Marshall, a Dist+ and an EQ and you'll be set!...at least as much as your fingers will let you :)

@VinCeXMS a cabinet is just essentially a box with speakers, the most common cab is a 4x12 thats 4 speakers. u can link a cab to a combo amp but usually one would have a head on top and two cabs which creates the standard amp stack and yes it does make things a lot louder. hope this has helped

My friend has one of these amps. That's nuts that there was only 150 of them made.. I never heard anything so loud in my entire life!!! You have to CRANK it to get the gain, but it sounds so sweet when you do. Can't wait to record it this summer! =)

@MeetyHam the head is the amp, the cabinet is the speakers, but u can play on any combo u want, i play with a 15 watt amp on a 400 watt stereo amp through 160 watt speakers and it jams perfectly'', explore and you will find what suits you''.
you need both, the whole head's purpose is to increase the signal to create an audible level of vibration in the speaker itself when it goes through the speakers. but the resistance in circuit of the speakers would probably stop the weak electric signal of a guitar or bass from even flowing through the speaker coils. if you try pluging a guitar into a cabinet,nothing really comes out.
also, there are "combos" with the head and the speakers attached in 1 over-sized speaker cabinet.

Besides he said in the begining he couldnt play Randys stuff do to copy right. If he mimics his sound too much... same lawsuit. Dont tell me it cant happen either. John Foggerty was sued by his former record companty for Plagerizing himself, because as a solo artist he sounded too much like CCR.

If I just get a JMP and mod it to get it "Beefed up" will I get the same sound as the 1959RR?

@VH5150MetallicaFan You would have to do the cascade mod to the high Normal input. That's all it is. If you want it cheap then just get a Ceriatone JMP 50 or 100 and do the mod to it. If you build it yourself and get an Avatar 2x12 cab you could have the whole stack for about $1000.

@VH5150MetallicaFan Use google. Ceriatone (you can buy one of their amps built or as a kit), Weber, Triode Electronics, and lots of other places have good kits. They are kits, so you have to make them. Tube amps are dangerous it you don't know what you're doing so do a lot of research if you decide on a kit. Avatar (google Avatar cabs) makes good cabs at a low price, or a Marshall 1960 if you have the money. I don't know of any amps that are already made (other than Ceriatone) for this sound.

@VH5150MetallicaFan I don't know. I've heard some bad things about them breaking, starting fires, blowing up, etc. But I've also heard that they are a lot better now and more reliable. I've never used it so I really don't know. I don't think it has the same circuit though. And I know it doesn't have as good transformers.

Did Randy go to Marshall, told them he wanted the Stock JMP "beefed up" and modded and in white? because all I have to do then is buy a JMP stock, get it "beefed up" and modded, and get it in white! before Randy got it modded, what was the amp originally? a JMP 2203?

@VH5150MetallicaFan It was a non-master volume JMP 100 watt Super Lead circuit with the gain stages cascaded into each other. He went to the Marshall factory and asked them to make it for him in white. I don't know what they did with this amp, but it doesn't sound like Randy's tone to me at all. I have Blizzard of Oz and the Randy Rhoads Tribute on tape. He sounded a lot better live than in the studio, IDK what they did to his sound in the studio. You will also need an MXR Distortion + and EQ.

Personally I think the stock side sounded more "Randy like" and Randy used an MXR Distortion + and an EQ and an Echoplex(which also adds an interesting overtone)... look at his old pedalboard pics -but just get an old Marshall, a Dist+ and an EQ and you'll be set!...at least as much as your fingers will let you :)

@VinCeXMS a cabinet is just essentially a box with speakers, the most common cab is a 4x12 thats 4 speakers. u can link a cab to a combo amp but usually one would have a head on top and two cabs which creates the standard amp stack and yes it does make things a lot louder. hope this has helped

My friend has one of these amps. That's nuts that there was only 150 of them made.. I never heard anything so loud in my entire life!!! You have to CRANK it to get the gain, but it sounds so sweet when you do. Can't wait to record it this summer! =)

you need both, the whole head's purpose is to increase the signal to create an audible level of vibration in the speaker itself when it goes through the speakers. but the resistance in circuit of the speakers would probably stop the weak electric signal of a guitar or bass from even flowing through the speaker coils. if you try pluging a guitar into a cabinet,nothing really comes out.
also, there are "combos" with the head and the speakers attached in 1 over-sized speaker cabinet.
