Most entertaining! A piece that never fails to drag, me out of the darkest of moods! Like the hand actions. Bet at least one of you can go "red lorry, yellow lorry" very fast! Well done!
I just ask myself why the slow bit was necessary... Slash the additions seem to be what they are trying to make funny... can't the music and lyrics stand by themselves? Staging helps... creative staging... again... don't really understand why, though.
@bujurpb I did. It was too slow. I had forgotten the line about "this particularly rapid, unintelligible patter" until I got to it at the end of the video and quite literally fell out of my chair laughing. There was nothing rapid or unintelligible about this rendition.
This won't do at all, more tempo please, it was written to be unintelligible... erm, I think the hint is in the lyrics lol. Don't like it lol Each to their own though
This is really a great, truly innovative rendition. Though, I admit I was really quite confused when I first saw the slow bit. After that, had me laughing out loud. Thanks for braving to be different! True to the words and the spirit, yet fresh and new. Good job.
I think this is brilliant, for once you get to hear the lyrics and appreciate them as we all know with GnS a lot of them do get lost! It's nice to see someone doing it differently for once and I think it's a shame that people seem to dislike it as it doesn't quite fit the 'traditional' way of doing the song. My opinion does matter!
When I first heard this in a theater without the slower recitation I left puzzled and went to the library to look up the lyrics. I appreciated it more the second time I saw it in performance.
That was bizarre. Anti-matter indeed. Talented people, but the whole point of the third verse, is pardoning the rapidity.
"This particularly rapid unintelligible patter isn't generally heard, and if it is it doesn't matter." I'm not sure how I feel about the slow intro. And the arms are iffy to me.
I can't speak for disneyxbox, but I don't see the point of it other than to add 3 minutes to the show. The slow part is just terrible and painful. The arms gimmick isn't needed and seem just thrown in for no reason other than the director's whim. If you don't understand the lyrics when it's done properly (fast), it's because the performers aren't enunciating properly, not because the song is too fast.
Well said bujurpb I am in total agreement with you, the adjudicater said that it was the first time that she had understood the words when they sang it slow and to me it is the best version I have seen/heard. Keep it going Soton Opera
Maybe disneyxbox but this rendition (with the same people) did win The Best Concerted Item at the Buxton International G&S Festival this year so it couldn't have been o total disaster...
this isnt a good theactrical idea, doesent work. the slow edition then the fast and the horrendous arms idea =[ and you obv know that robin was out of time
I think I like the Pirates of Penzance version better.

I'm a pretty traditional G&S fan but when a mutation like this can be done well I'm all for it. Good and entertaining job.

Hilarious. I'm auditioning for Despard, though, and we can't have the 'glass of water' break. Ouch!

"This not particularly rapid, fairly intelligible patter, isn't generally heard because it's not the way it's written."

@reedforcongress
Why not watch all of it before commenting about it being slow?

I am certainly not going to criticize this. I'm afraid someone would ask me to do it better. Oh well, it really doesn't matter.

I can only imagine the hours of rehearsals here!

Chris - try watching it all before commenting...

Too slow! Half the merit of this song is in the speed! It's Sullivan's fastest song.

Oliviathefolkie - it is sung twice, once slow and once fast. Have another listen/look (all the way through this time).
bujurpb 1 year ago
@bujurpb Right, thanks for that. My mistake. However, I do not think having it sung through slowly once first does anything for this song.

I expected this to be rotten, but it is so well-sung, I am really impressed and I enjoyed it tremendously.

Nothing like the best version of this marvellous song I've ever heard, though the performance with the glass of water is funny.

Perhaps disneyxbox will enlighten us all as to why is isn't a good "theatrical idea"!?
