  • No.1 get away from the age thing

That a 8 year old kid can play Mozart in 2 years

is infinitely LESS surprising than a 28 year old can

Prodigy etc ? It is all shite

name one musician or sports person who started ( say ) 8 years

There are millons of musicians, sports people. they all need luck more that anything now

  • wow! at first i thought it was too slow, but it still sounds good! the technique is spot on and the interpretation is solid too!

  • this is one of the greatest living virtuosos

  • she yuja wang btw, she's now also AMAZING!

  • is she 10 years old?

  • play Mozart until you are 16

play Beethoven till you are 21

    play Bach from 0 ..

And maybe think of Chopin. No disrespect but you woudln;t do a Hammerklavier, so I take this in the same vane. Nice try but you are not ready for this. K488?

  • @kinkokonko emmmm shes now the faster piano player in the world...now thjis peace is easy shit for her...

  • haha...she plays realy nice though

  • this is that I called delicacy

  • Brilliance my ears are in heaven!

  • 太強了吧!這是一個12歲小孩的程度嗎???我嘴巴快閉不起來了!太強了!!

  • @josephliu1105 他是王羽佳

  • Speaking as an almost complete amateur, I like this tempo; the notes don't blend into each other as much.

  • her technique is better than me when shes 10 and im now 15 wtf

  • Wow! You play Great,,

  • I think what is more impressive than the technique here is the outright musicality of her performance ... just wonderful. Her phrasing is quite mature and crystal clear, a great great good thing.

  • always asians children...

  • Lang Lang, LOOK!!!!! She was ten!

  • @gordonchrome Lang Lang could play all 24 Chopin Etudes by the age of 13

  • her sixteenth notes are so even! amazing!

  • amazing :) the technique is fantastic !

  • *****

  • Wow¡, 19 people are stupid and deaf!

  • @3232siobhan have you spoken to yuja lately?

  • @3232siobhan What planet are you from?

  • @3232siobhan What planet are you from?

  • @3232siobhan You are absolutely crazy! She played this wonderfully with perfect coordination, and she seemed to have really enjoyed playing this piece.

  • @3232siobhan Do you know how terribly difficult it is to tackle this etude? And this is a 10 year old girl...she is now and incredible musician and one of the finest young pianists today. You're the freak show for being so cruel towards a gifted child. Get a life.

  • @Ckorn123

Yes, I'm well aware of 'how difficult' this piece is. All the more reason for her not to be playing it!!! What is it with you people who get all excited about an over-exposed child playing music beyond her emotional comprehension and physical capabilities? I thought freak shows went out with the Victorians, but seems they never died in the Classical Music world! Like I said earlier, it's a form of child abuse to put a child through such rigors at such a tender age.

  • @3232siobhan I'm 21 and have just learnt this etude...Your comment is ignorant and hateful. She's playing wonderfully, shows signs of great technical mastery and steadiness and imbues the piece with enough dynamic...0:57 is it not a sudden piano? 0:44 is it not a sudden forte? Ok so she doesn't play this like valentina yet...noone does though! When she is 12 she will be able to play it like a renowed pianist ok?

  • @3232siobhan terrible? anyway, it's 1000 times better then u will ever play

  • though she is still a girl, but she plays this chopin with very proper feeling, strong feeling for high tunes, weak feeling for low tunes, the strings just like the waves of the sea howls, very impressive

  • This piece? Like that? With those little hands? And she isn't even breaking a sweat! She just seems to roll through this like it's just another day, no wonder she's as phenomenal as she is today.

  • I used to play that, but somebody took the masking tape off middle C and now I'm confussed. Impressive isn't she? A little scary too. Was she really only 10? What else did she have time to do in her short life? Have a little fun? Oil her up once in a while and this little machine should last for years!!! Ok....I'm jealous, but I did get to go out and play with sticks and stones when I was 10 and no one can take those memories from me.

  • nailed it

  • I would say young Wang is almost as entertaining as current Wang :D

  • No matter how well you do ,there is always another asain beating you.

  • Wow, what a surprise that's she is Asian.

  • I practice this etude for 2 months but I cannot play like her forever.

She is unbelievable that she played this when she was only 10 years old.

    Thank you for uploading.

  • Tempo is only very suggestive subject. When your watch this for a first time after watching different pianist you feel like to slow. But after listen to her one more time you don't feel that is to slow.

  • amazing!!!!!!!!!

  • OMG....this is unbelievable and veritable PIANISTIC TALENT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

All professional pianists should listen to this 10 yrs old and kneel down humbly and listen intently to her great articulation and beautiful balance!!!

  • It should be a little faster, but u did it perfect! :D

  • For a ten year old, this is outstanding.

The performer should play this at a tempo that he/she can express the music properly. I applaud her for keeping the tempo down to the point that she could still get the music across to the listener.

  • way, way too slow....

  • @MyInfiniteWisdom Do you know anything about tempos troughout history? You've just seen and heard 'to much' the VERY FAST examples, so for you it's difficult to see this as something fast. If you compare a TGV with one of the first trains, who were VERY fast in their time, then you'll see those trains aren't that fast anymore to us, because we know faster. But know that this tempo is allready very fast ;)

  • The tempo doesn't really matter. As long as she has solid techniques, it's good.

  • you people know how many hours has this poor girl been forced to study and study?? i think it shouldn't be morally accepted..

there is no talent.. just lots and lots and lots HARD WORK hours.

  • Comment removed

  • @9jea1 Hahaha, "no talent" ! Look at her now, she is one of the most exceptional pianists ever. And no doubt she is happy to be what she is today.

  • Really talented and now one of the best for me.

  • played by yuja...Yuja Wang?!?!?

  • er i wan to comment that the piece sounded better when it was played faster. Im nt saying this is wrong, but the melodies comes to life better when it was played fast.

  • Although it's not as fast as what Chopin wanted, I think because her playing is technically excellent with all dynamics and clarity well performed, it should be accepted and agreed that this is still a very good rendition.

    Well.. that's what I think

  • This is only perfect because they cut your hands off in China if you do not represent the nation with perfection.

  • - @ Supermassively -

While they have been known for extreme measures at times, they don't cut your hands off for the reason you mentioned. China isn't THAT bad.

  • @pmgodfrey False.

  • The fact is, you know she would play it faster today. People here are getting serious about the tempo, how it works or doesn't. Come on, it's a ten year old who is fantastic for her age, but don't look for mature musical insight here, I can hear the tuition. It's worth watching to see that even virtuosi have to learn to walk before they can run and that discipline is key at that age.

  • I like her articulation+accuracy of notes played+dynamics over speed mentality

  • Chopin go hide urself :).

  • I completely agree with the two most popular comments. It's so nice to know I'm not alone. This performance is the perfect tempo for this piece I'm so happy this was posted. Thank you, you play beautifully

  • @emax426

How is it the perfect tempo?

Chopin wanted a half note = 88 per minute

  • @anonymous345

For me it's perfect tempo. Do you have any grasp of what I am saying? It's clear you want to start an argument. Unless you met Chopin and spoke to him, there is NOTHING you can say or do to lead me to think you know anything about him much less what he wanted. And no, I don't care what's written on any piece of paper. I would need proof you spoke with him, so for starters you'd need to be almost 200 years old. Supply proof of this and maybe I'll begin taking you seriously.

  • @emax426 I hope your argument is down to your extensive research and not just off the top of your head. This etude was written at the latest in 1832, 17 years before he died. That's penty of time to notice that the publisher put the wrong tempo marking on. Urtext have done their research, which I would trust over some philosophical agrument, even though I do think it works at wildy different tempi.

  • @emax426 exactly "for" you it is the perfect tempo but you said it yourself

"Unless you met Chopin and spoke to him, there is NOTHING you can say or do to lead me to think you know anything about him much less what he wanted."

This imply's to you friend unless you actually dont comprehend what urtext means i highly suggest you rethink criticizing other peoples opinion, refer to how nostromissimo so elegantly put things couldnt have put it better myself.

And this girl is brill for 10yrs old.

  • hoooooooowwwwwww?!?!?!?!?!??!!?

  • Big talent! Bravo! BUT, get a teacher that guides you on the right position to play specially the octaves. High writs and low knuckles are the worst mistake for a piano player. If you fix this you will be absolutely amazing. Is not your fault, but your teacher/s

  • brava!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I've been playing "ten-four" for 30 years and technically she plays it better than I do. Her tempo, precision, and nuance reveal textures in the composition that disappear at higher speeds, regardless of how well it is played. She understands what the music is saying. Considering her age, I stand in awe of her.

  • awesome. i report it as child abuse tho.

    ;)

  • Time to audition for Juilliard, kid

  • @shuohuang: thanks.. ^^ (btw, why's your username is "shuo huang" ? Are you lying.. hehehe.. ^^ Kidding.. ^^)

  • btw, who's the name of the pianist?

  • Yuja Wang

    Born Feb. 10, 1987

    Beijing, China

  • hey it's very good ! maybe the best little asian i've seen on youtube :) bravo no doubt you'll have a great career.

  • by ten years old.... how many hours of piano have she practiced?!

She's INSANELY good :O~!!!!! I don't see anything missing from her performance.

  • it's better you search another piece than not play it in tempo

  • @aimeeluffs I think you got that wrong.... its better to play a hard piece in your own tempo instead of trying to brag with the piece itself-.- i like this very much !!!!

  • Comment removed

  • Not bad.

  • That was f**king awesomely amazing! Especially since you're only 10.

    ...and of course, she's asian

  • her musical is so good!

  • no offense but as usual, chinese = technique

  • What's the point in saying "no offense", then saying something which is obviously offensive

  • OMG!!!!

  • Incredible!!

  • this is incredible...she is only 10 yearswaw...what a talented girl.amazing

  • Amazing!!! *_*

  • child protigy. there are maybe only a few kids in the world who can play like that at the age of 10

  • DAMN!

  • this girl has got it. damn.

  • I've been watching quite a lot of videos of young prodigies lately: 3-, 5-, 8-years old,... Watching them, I'm undeniably impressed, but yet I remain skeptical somehow. Do they really understand music and its "hereafter dimension"? Because it's what a work of art is all about! I don't know where we are heading with all these children who have talent but may not actually be gifted. Practicing hours and hours a day is most important of course, but I think great pianists have got something else.

  • @EBJ90 i see what you are saying. of course, as kids, they won't have lived long enough to truly appreciate music in that sense. However, it's amazing how at this young age they are able to drive themselves to have outstanding technique. With time, the best ones will appreciate music in the sense you describe... i think we're headed in a great direction.

  • @mistahrhee : I definitely agree with you on that - developing such good technique is really amazing at that age. But I remain a bit worried about the evolution of piano music: with this increasing number of concert artists, I just hope people will never stop looking beyond the technical performance.

  • @EBJ90 ah, yes... although i think the quality of music is going to be "just as good", the motivation or intention for playing is definitely drifting. many talented students seek hours of practice for the wrong reasons... we see that music is no longer simply an avenue for internal exploration, but is now also emphasizing competition or fame...

  • Comment removed

  • @mistarhrhee : I couldn't agree more! =)

  • Well, Yujia Wang is now 22 old and is undeniably a world class pianist. I understand your concern, but I think that even when she was this young she already had a grasp on music far beyond her age. I am not talking technique here, but feeling. Watch her rendition of Chopin Waltzes from this same concert and you will know what I mean. But I think that is particularly video is not as impressive, because op.10 no.4 has a depth very hard to fathom even for an adult pianist.

  • I watched the Waltzes, and liked them a lot - Yujia Wang's got it! But my remark did not concern her specifically, it was rather a general statement.

  • This video I think was posted in slow motion. I have downloaded and checked it in a bit faster motion. Not only does it sound like the best Etude No. 4 I've ever heard in my life, but the video itself looks more on time and normal. Just check how slow she lets go of the keys from the piano after the last chord of the piece on this video.

  • ...meravigliosa Yujia Wang ...the pianist....eccezionale e dolce!!!

  • youtube sensation! :D

  • The right pupils will meet the right teachers....eventually. Music cannot be learnt when you haven't got it....

  • She is working with the right teachers...

  • this is good

  • i dont believe it....im struggling to learn this piece at 14.....well, this is the great Yuja Wang!

  • Metafísico detected!!

    HAIUAHOAOUOIUA'

  • Doesn't need to be faster. This is a clinic.

  • I prefer the cleanliness and good dynamics in at this tempo over a completely berserk rendition of this piece. She did very nicely indeed.

  • @fuchion15 it's really great playing, but it's about 145 BPM, which is slow. this tempo ruins the structure of this etude. but this it's just my opinion.

  • @mark9203 if i showed this video to all of the incoming freshmen this year, most of them would probably say something along the lines of what you said. i have to use the overly used phrase of "she is only ten", and if she has to sacrifice either playing it well or up to tempo, it's only smart to choose the former. undoubtedly when she gets to higher education in music, her professor would be begging her to slow down.

  • @fuchion15

richter did it the berzerk way because:

    A. he is russian (pissed off by goverment)

    B. he is over 40 years on each video of him playing it (wish he'd be younger)

Also 10 year old able to play one of very difficult piece in the world? that is extreme.

  • @bolawarrior I have no idea what you are trying to say... However, I would like to point out that Richter was fast yet completely in control, not berserk. Overall, I still have no idea what you're saying.

  • that's totally inborn ;)

  • She was 12 years old then. Not ten.

  • About half the tempo Chopin indicated, but at least the touch is very distinct and even.

  • Do you have any clue about music? Richter did it in 1:35. Soloists average is 1:50-2mins. She was 10 and she played it in 2:15! Cortot's edition says 2:20 as a suggested time. It's obvious that she could play faster because everything was ultra clean. But she was 10! Losers post comments because they cant post themselves playing "about half the temo"

  • still doesn't change the fact that Chopin composed this piece which meant to be fast...

  • You are right, "half tempo" is exaggerated, but why do you keep mentioning her age? Is there an inverse correlation between the age of the performer and the validity of the interpretation? And why so irate? Because I dared criticize a child? I wonder why you only addressed the "negative" aspect of my post. As a matter of fact, I never even said it was bad playing.

  • Faster than that is nearly useless.

Some pros should take lesson of this version

  • true.

  • @hailkayy i disagree with u about the tempo. tempo should be based the on the person whether he or she wants it at. and tell u the truth i look for more on perfecting each note rather than speed because i've heard many faster version with a much more crisp sound and sounded great. but learning the piece is very difficult and took me a long time to even play this. but it is the matter of the person playing the piano, not the piece itself. chopin made songs for the person the interpret~

  • @hailkayy pros should take a lesson from a 10 year old girl? Really? you honestly have no idea what you're talking about when you say that

  • @blackness1747 Agree.

  • @hailkayy Thing is that Wang Yuja would've played it up to speed (and even surpassing it!) at her current age. I'd think that based on her performances of (transcriptions) Cziffra's bumblebee and Volodos's Turkish March.

  • @hailkayy She plays unquestionably well, but you should remember that it is a technical exercise that develops the skill of chromaticism. Therefore, mastering this at faster speeds, while perhaps not as musical tasteful as this performance, is still very much useful, as it fulfils the original purpose of this piece: as an etude. However, I do agree with this tempo. Even Chopin's technical exercises are, to this day, masterpieces, and should be cherished musically, not rushed through to impress.

  • wow is she like a child prodigy???

  • no, she just plays really good at a very young age XD

  • wow i'm extremely jealous......how can a 10 year old play this song with much ease, and i can barely play it? sigh....

  • kills my life too..

  • galing mo....grabe!.....your great..!

  • Wow, she managed to change the Tempo and it fits right in.

  • how old is she now today? she has the potential to become consert master.

  • 22 yrs old. watch her other videos in youtube! :D

  • I like it also at this speed :)

    She plays it nicely =)

  • I have this cd -.- 20 years ago i think

  • rofl.stupid boy.

  • like to see them at 10 yrs old =/

  • a wonderful performance for a 10-year-old girl

  • GOOD GOD

  • whaaaa

    genius!!!! prodigy!!!! lol

    i love this song

    gosh she's like a nodame :D

  • exactly what i thought, amazing girl..

  • Actually, she moved to America at age 10, but her parents didn't move with her, so I think she played for enjoyment rather than been forced to play.

  • Hey you can actually here all the notes at this speed. I actually don't mind this speed even though it is slower than most pianists play it. But very even and clear.

  • I agree! I like this speed much better. I like how she plays the notes so strongly too.

  • no, no, no, no, no, no...just no

this young lady is UNBELIEVABLE. i mean RIDICULOUS, truly a marvel.

but this piece needs to be faster.

this speed seems right for her at this time though, she's making very few, if any, mistakes...soon she will learn to improve on her velocity.

    5 stars of course

  • amazing

  • She plays it very good, with strong fingers, and one tempo.. U know this should go much much faster right? I know shes 10, shes amazing at her age... I like it :)

  • WTF, 10 years old playing these stuff?

    I think 12 - 15 will be most suitable.

Anyways she is really talented, is she Japanese?

If yes, she reminds me of Nodame Cantabile...

  • Tempo here is medium. She can play it flawlessly and still get nuances out of it. An 'A;

  • Comment removed

  • omg what a talent

with adult body and traned big hand

play this piece in fast tempo

it is not too hard and get fire efect

    but

this young genious keep perfect contorol

in difficult slow tempo with age handicap

  • The tempo is extremely extremely slow. It sounds awfully choppy.

  • it was good...

she played it really well..and connected..

  • this is just torture!!! i cant bear to seee this gor; struggle playing this chopin etude when proffesionals play this, look at her she cant even play presto, yes notes is right but she has not technicly grown to this

  • you are so wrong.she is complete relaxed, every passage is perfect done.if you are right, she would not be able to play without mistakes, very clean and with so much power at the end.

  • OMG.

    amazzzingg

  • Its amazing how she plays this hard etude on just 10 years of age.. thats amazing...

But she is too young, she shouldnt even start to play this etude. The tempo is very very slow...

Like a practise in your home, before real playing..

And playing this slow on a concert?? its silly

  • talented

  • This is from a teaching video. So the tempo was kept slow on purpose.

  • right, exactly. she can now play bumblebee at double speed.

  • wowow she is amazing

  • Very nice indeed! Please post more, and keep up the good work. :)

  • Excellent !!!!

    bye Serena

  • wow 10 years old!!! GENUIS!!

  • hey, dont hate on chopin...just cause his stuff was intense

yeah mozart, tchaikovsky, beethoven, lizst (my personal fav, chopin being 2nd), and bach were awesome...so was he.

its kinda to classical like hardcore is to techno XD...except not completely

    i love hardcore
