RFID tags are powered by the antenna that is trying to communicate with it, so conceivably if you had a big enough antenna, you would be able to read a RFID from more than 50 feet away. It is possible for the government to install antennas in many doorways and they could track people's movement, though only intermittently, they can follow your whereabouts and it would all get put into a database.
Be forewarned that the government will try to take advantage of every possible tracking method,
Everyone is so damn afraid of RFID, but in reality, most all passive RFID has a range of less than 25-feet, with most commercial 'theft deterrent' RFID having ranges below 12-feet. Only active RFID (class II) has the ability to 'talk' with the receiver bidirectionally. a metal altoids box will block most RFID signals, and so will most RFID wallets. Don't inject a chip into yourself, and you are quite ok...really.

I used to load the capacitor with a high voltage, than unload it into the coil which would induce a high curent into the RFID chip resulting in a broken RFID... Then i took an arrow in the knee.
He loaded the capacitator with high voltage, than unloadet it into the coil which inductet a high curent into the RFID chip. Result = RFID broke and is not functioning anymore
It's not the hight current, that kills the RFID-chip. It's the high voltage. RFID-chips get power out of an high frequenzy em-field. If you bring them near a strong hf em-field, the induced voltage kills them.
What he did(or, what it looks like to me) is make a high power inductive coil. The stoves that are not hot to the touch and have the special pans also uses an inductive coil, so you could probably do the same thing with one of those(I don't have a stove like that, though, so I can't test it. Plus, why would you want to keep destroying RFID tags?)

I don't understand the anti-RFID hysteria. They only work at very close range. It's not like they can track you from satellites. Even in this demo, the computer only senses it when the watch is right in front of the sensor. Further, facial recognition is already good enough to track you everywhere you go if that's what "they" want.

@eventhisidistaken My main problem with them is that the card companies basically put these things in their cards without even bothering to worry about the fact that people can easily (if they have the proper expertise) build devices to steal the data on the card. @wayneo0909 They are already installed in much of your clothing, if not most of it by now. The typical person on the street currently has at least three or four RFID devices on them. Withoin a few years they will be in virtually all consumer products. There will be one in each shoe, your pants, your shirt, your coat, hat, even underwear. Plus one in every credit or debit card, drivers, license, ID, and even the wallet itself. They don't need to implant one in your body unless you are nudist. :)

He opened up a disposable camera and got access to the capacitor inside. He charged it up to its maximum, if you notice he's reading capacitive voltage on the multimeter, to one leg of the capacitor he soldered what looks to be four or five feet of wire. Once charged, he took the other end of the wire and touched it to to opposite leg of the capacitor with the coil near the RFID.
@vanishn An RFID is little more than a tiny antenna coil attached to a chip. It receives voltage from all outside sources. That capacitor discharging like that through the coiled wire produces enough EMF to burn out the RFID's antenna because that antenna must receive other signals, EMF included. It shorts out antenna windings to each other disabling it.
Be careful though as that same device will also clobber pocket sized radios too if you're too close. (Which includes a cell phone)

I don't understand the anti-RFID hysteria. They only work at very close range. It's not like they can track you from satellites. Even in this demo, the computer only senses it when the watch is right in front of the sensor. Further, facial recognition is already good enough to track you everywhere you go if that's what "they" want.

@eventhisidistaken My main problem with them is that the card companies basically put these things in their cards without even bothering to worry about the fact that people can easily (if they have the proper expertise) build devices to steal the data on the card. If anyone brings up these issues, particularly media people, they're threatened with legal action. I'm not one of the conspiracy guys who believe the government wants to put them on people and "mark of the beast" bullshit.

@wayneo0909 They are already installed in much of your clothing, if not most of it by now. The typical person on the street currently has at least three or four RFID devices on them. Withoin a few years they will be in virtually all consumer products. There will be one in each shoe, your pants, your shirt, your coat, hat, even underwear. Plus one in every credit or debit card, drivers, license, ID, and even the wallet itself. They don't need to implant one in your body unless you are nudist. :)

I don't think it's a huge conspiracy, that would be impossible to hide. But the technology is extremely attractive to retailers and marketers, and government ALWAYS takes interesting in tracking when it's possible, and they absolutely will abuse it. Look at cell phones.

He opened up a disposable camera and got access to the capacitor inside. He charged it up to its maximum, if you notice he's reading capacitive voltage on the multimeter, to one leg of the capacitor he soldered what looks to be four or five feet of wire. Once charged, he took the other end of the wire and touched it to to opposite leg of the capacitor with the coil near the RFID.

@vanishn An RFID is little more than a tiny antenna coil attached to a chip. It receives voltage from all outside sources. That capacitor discharging like that through the coiled wire produces enough EMF to burn out the RFID's antenna because that antenna must receive other signals, EMF included. It shorts out antenna windings to each other disabling it.
Be careful though as that same device will also clobber pocket sized radios too if you're too close. (Which includes a cell phone)

@vanishn Oh, and I almost forgot, if you have something that's RFID'd, and want to remove the RFID without all that hassle, you're probably already equipped with the ULTIMATE RFID killer.
I call it "A Microwave Oven."
It will wreck an RFID in under three seconds flat. Credit cards, Government issued ID's, etc, if put in the microwave for about three to five seconds, will absolutely destroy RFID's and there'll be no outside discernible damage as long as you don't leave it in there too long.
