your conducting inspired me so much last year when i saw this video. in fact it inspired me so much as to make me try out for drum major. then the directors saw how inspired i was and this year i was chosen as drum major. you think i could get some tips for my second year?
for the people who are wondering this is 4/4 and 5/4 you just need to count it out other than that I envy his drum majoring style!! It is so wonderous and asdfjsdlkfjlksdjfl;kdsjflk;dsjflk;jslkf
You are like...a drum major god :O.....I heard my band is having drum major applications after out break and you just inspired me more so than before, I'm too excited now! Thanks!
my drum major conducts a lot like this. he gets really into the music. at a contest i was at a couple weeks ago he actually popped a wheel off of the podium when he jumped during our 4th movement(closer). i love this style of conducting because its fun to see him get all excited during big 'in your face' moments in the show. he likes to 'punch' the first note of a hit rather than just doing the basic downbeat with his hand
I was drum major for two years and THAT'S exactly the perfect style of conducting I like to see man. I would've liked to have seen you do another pattern but that one looked amazing for you. Great job!
love it....but my director probably wouldnt like that much 'enthusiasm' he wants you to enjoy it but he doesnt like drum majors to be that "jumpy" for lack of a better word
Wow. That was amazing. Do you have any tips for me? I'm a sophmore and I really wanna be a drum major next year. How are you so expressive but while keeping the beats and everything. It's awesome. Please help me!
The point is to express musicality. The point is to have a love for what you are doing. And the point is to emote what the music creates, which is exactly what Corey does, and not just on the field, or in a parade block. I would much rather be led by a drum major with exceptional showmanship, and not just some automaton with no heart. I've seen it time and time again; marching enthusiasts who have zero musical sensibilities whatsoever. I thank you Corey, for bringing life back to the music.
I think that this is absolutely amazing. I have tried many different conducting techniques, but my band doesn't like them, and in this video, you use about THREE!! Amazing :D
Why is your pattern so low??? I was always taught you need to have your pattern at chest level so it's easily visible. And I would recommend have more variation in pattern size on big moments and spreading you feet on big moments aswell. But I liked it, GREAT JOB.
@DeDrumMajor Depending on what sort of podium (if any) you use on field you may or may not need a pattern at your chest level. If you watch DM's from long ago before they used podiums (or just the 1 foot boxes) they held their patterns very very high, but when you're on a 4 or 6 foot high podium your pattern should be easily visible from pretty much anywhere on the field most of the time.
When compared to the other submissions, I have to say that you definitely deserved 1st place. However, I don't personally care for your conducting style. Everything is for the most part musically appropriate, but I don't think it would translate on the field well. Just my opinion. Late congrats!
AMAZING! I've watched this video over and over and over! I can't get enough..... I was a drum major and this gets my inner band nerd flowing again =) love it!!!!!
Actually now that I've watched it again, I think i know what some of the problems are. Some of the other comments say that you are not reflecting the music very well, and I think they are referring to just your conducting pattern itself. Your body language and facial expressions, what most Dm's lack, are Awesome.
I don't mean this in a bad way, but the current drum major at my school conducted one song like that, and as a first year member (8th grader not freshman, 2 8th graders are chosen every year to be in the high school marching band) it's a little intimidating and hard to follow. Also, I love the high energy in it, but I don't think it fit the music.
I'd like to know where people are learning this conducting style. It's not bad at all, in fact I really like the energy at some of the really big impact parts. I just think that using a Huge and very static-focalpoint pattern All the time does not reflect the music as well as you could. Also some of the ques and cuttoffs are a little hard to read. Otherwise, Not bad at all. Great energy and enthusiasm on your part.
Conducting does not reflect the music as well as it could have. Giving strong beats one and three is good but it seems as though you are conducting recorded music as some directions are given after the ensemble does them. lead the music, don't mirror what the ensemble is already doing.
This guy is ok.... His pattern is too inconsistent. If you want a list, if it helps, I can provide one by inbox. I don't being "that guy" The biggest thing is a real band who has problems executing the cues he is giving would not be able to follow him at all. Sir, you are definitely a leader who has pretty good execution skills and excellent communication skills, if you could just clean up the inconsistencies, nobody I know could compete with you!!! Best of luck in the future!!!
I am a senior field commander and student conductor in tennessee. i scored a 100 in marching band in the drummajor/field commander catagory. You are a strong conductor however, i don't agree with your plain. it's really low. that's my personal opinion. congrats on the win!
@VMFA115Starloric if i'm not mistaken it's more of a dotted quarter feel than a 3/4 feel. the glockenspiel part emphasizes the 4/4 feel as opposed to 3/4.
@spideyownz Yea its leadership...not about conducting or spining a mace/military....you put you band in front of you and trust them also if you want their respect give them yours. ALWAYS stay possitive it lets your band know that you are a great leader for the marching band - im Kyle Keyser drum major for terra cotta
@MultiDargon for me what i did was i practiced doing it within a small box slowly, as you get better start conducting bigger and it should feel natural
Hi, I just got the drum major position at Clarion University for the Fall 2011 marching season. As a current freshman I and i have been looking for things to incorporate hopefully for next year and i really enjoyed your musicality as well as your showmanship, I can only hope that I will do as great a job as you.
This is the best drum major conducting ive sen ! very emotional , and exspressive ! it looks like you love the music , and all the cues , just seem to be part of you . no hesitation at all . its so great .. im gonna watch it again !
WOW congratulations! that was stupendous! not that you had any competition lol. i would love to one day ba able to conduct as well as you do. (you have inspired me to use this piece to audition for drum major in the fall)
You are truly amazing! Thankyou for posting this video, it really helps to study different conducting techniques and styles and I think I know which one I prefer. I am trying out for drum major and you just helped me with my audition, thankyou
You are an amazing drum major. You defiantly inspired me and showed me the raw emotion and skill of a true drum major. I wonder how your band preformed with you as there leader.
The judges made the right decision. You stood out the most amongst the rest.
well in canada, band wise we follow more or less the british system, where the drum major is a the head of the band with a mace and does basically controls the movement of the band, there is also a set conductor who conducts the band while stationary, all the commands to play and stop on the march are done my the dm however, i have to say the american dm's are pretty cool too
This is epic, however, I really bothered me how the sound got a little behind by the end. it made the conducting mismatch a little. If you could fix that (what I assume to be a video processing error) then this video is perfect, great conducting!
I want to thankyou so much for posting this video. I am applying for Drum Major this year at my High School and I really hope to be appointed. Your conducting conveys all the emotion that I want to put into my conducting. You create the emotion behind the music and therefore allow those you are conducting to convey the same emotion.
You personify everything I hope to be as a drum major in this video. Thankyou so much.
I am sooo jealous.... you are fricken amazing!!!!!! I am trying out for Drum Major at the end of this year but I know his favorite will already get it so.... I hope me or my other friend gets it.... He's going to get it by kissing butt, but that means that I have to work harder! Thanks for the inspiration! :)
Gilroy's hard to conduct to sometimes, you pulled it off very well. I was actually imagining the stepoffs and cues in my head when you conducted them. Well done, one band kid, to another, from a rural town in Virginia.
I'm sorry man. But your exuberance is getting in the way of your clarity. You are, at times, very clear with the beat. But all the extra stuff is just bad. I understand wanting to get into the performance, but conducting is about getting the ensemble to respond to your gestures. IMO, they can't to what you're offering.
So the expression is amazing! Very often I see the robo conductors that just make me want to hurl. I like how he break from a standard pattern to really get into it. The only thing I'm seeing is that the ones aren't straight, they tend to come down at a diagonal and he might have rushed at bit to his threes. The ones are also too far apart so that the ones and threes end up in the same place, but otherwise very nice conducting :)
Don't get to carried away with it. Remember you are conducting the band. To much jumping around can be a distraction as well as them not being able to keep in time.
THIS IS THE BEST GUY EVER! I can't stop watching. And LOL at his little smirk right after he cues in the mellos at 1:19! OMMGGG AWESOME! This guy makes me want to try out for drum major next year.
Very good. Everyone is saying that you are the best they've ever seen so i wonder what they would say if i had a video of me up? I was undefeated as a drum major in all classes and was the highest scored drum major in my schools history. Nice job though :)
That's really good, I'm trying out for University of Cincinnati's drum major currently. Your facial interpretation is awesome. Did it take you long to be able to cue with both hands? We only use the left hand for cueing and dynamics and the right solely for straight time and emphasis here.
You've got the energy, but in my opinion, you move around too much. If you stand more still, and stick to your ictus a little better, you'll be truly amazing.
You are so good, one of the girls auditioning at my school for DM mimiced your whole performance. She even was chosen to be drum major. But let's see how long that'll last after I show my director your video... :)
I like your enthusiasm, and clear pattern, but your pattern doesn't not reflect the musicality of the piece. Your pattern starts off too high and too big. Try keeping your pattern relative with your emotions throughout the piece.
I'm practicing becoming a drum major, and a recent drum major recommended this video for me to practice with. And it was amazing. Thanks! Your really good.
You use a lot sagittal plane - don't know if that was intentional or not unless you felt that it was needed to convey the beat to a large ensemble like that of a marching band
your conducting inspired me so much last year when i saw this video. in fact it inspired me so much as to make me try out for drum major. then the directors saw how inspired i was and this year i was chosen as drum major. you think i could get some tips for my second year?

awesome. i like your enthusiasm in your conducting it really brings out your pattern

Good job, all in all.

I like your enthusiasm, and clear pattern, but your pattern doesn't not reflect the musicality of the piece. Your pattern starts off too high and too big. Try keeping your pattern relative with your emotions throughout the piece.

Great form on your salute!
Very expressive as well.
You use a lot sagittal plane - don't know if that was intentional or not unless you felt that it was needed to convey the beat to a large ensemble like that of a marching band
