  • I've been listening to Haydn all my life, one of my favorite composers along with Mozart and Beethoven. This third movement to the Concerto in C lifts him above all his ever done into their class, and as exciting as music can ever be.

  • Awesome. Too bad the first movement isn't posted.

  • Oh my. Looks like Jerry got pressured into wearing the puffy shirt on TV.

  • How come people call him Papa Haydn? Is that something that has been around forever? Where did that originate?

  • @Doll0555 It's because of his work with establishing and writing pieces for string quartets that alot of people refer to him as "Papa Haydn".

  • i like what hes wearing .

  • A marvelous performance of a stupendous composition by the great Papa Haydn. Hard to believe this was discoved as late as 1962! Bravi tutti!

  • The soloist is simply outstanding and so is the chamber orchestra. The conductor looks more like a banker than a musician. I have never seen a conductor look so casual yet get such good results. I guess the musicians simply ignored him.

  • i like how people here are putting comments as if they actually know how to play cello, HAHA. (whilst the majority here probably can, others are just fucking around)

  • God, I could never play it that fast.....And so clean......and that conductor is like frozen

  • this guy plays in such a chill and cool manner, despite the hard technique and speed he plays it at...unbelievable!!!

  • This is just a magical vid in every way.

  • yeah so clean. and wait, look like he memorize the piece? haha. wow,he really practice hard for good performance. Im going to play this piece too,but that stupid teacher gave us this piece and let us practice for 2 weeks and we will get audition for the soloist. i hope i can memorize? with in 2 weeks and play this clean. Woaw?!!!!... PRAY FOR ME GUYS~hehe. :)

  • the conductor looks like he would conduct a piece in andante

  • 5:08-5:14 - VERY very nice.

  • This movement is rlly hard and super fast, and he is playing perfectly and 100%ly clearly

  • i like how he flicks his hand on the open notes in the beginning of the song. :P

  • @helar1984 he is getting rid of all tensions.. it's a great method and if you look at his left hand, we'll see. that's what makes the difference between him and lots of others cellists

  • this is so clean...

  • This is fantastically played by julian Lloyd Webber. He is an incredibly great cellist.

  • To play on the d string on the first note i easier, but it´s sounds better on the a string

  • When i start this song i start on the d string . a lot of the videos i see on youtube, the musician starts on the a string. Which way is preferred?

  • Amazing comments, BB123456 +José95!

  • I prefer using the A-String. sounds better, bigger sound...and then, its easier for the first scale , at least, for me. o.o

  • This guy is a musical genius!

  • he looks like romeo from romeo and juliet in a non-cute way...he's very talented all the same.

  • :-)!

  • that's a pretty bom-dig outfit he's got on there. must've been hard to play with those sleeves

  • crazy...

  • 2:51 OMG YES.

  • JL Webber plays like a machine. His left hand technique is too perfect and his bow hand compliments it just right. Plays with such precision!

  • Thanks God, he DOESN'T PLAY LIKE A MACHINE!

  • Wow just amazing!

  • 1:58 - 2:02. "I like to make it look like Im actually doing something "

  • I love you for this comment. ;D

  • i love those sleeves lol

  • One of the best interpretations ever besides du Pré.

  • for 5:08 it´s not the apropiate digitation, and the concert at that moment is some different, but also very nice

  • I agree, it takes guts to run on the C string at that position. Wonder what strings he's using.

  • Guts indeed. :)

  • I think he plays the same notes on another string (in a higher position). So thats why you hear a different noice. At 5:21 he turns back to the a-string in a lower position.

  • And we have to think that maybe he preffers that digitation, because that's a likeness matter of every player. Every one of us is different.... I want fingers like the chopin's ones hahaha

  • His musical performance is beyond compare. But it turns out that his clownish attire created an undesirable distraction and may have attracted more comments than his art. It is unfortunate that someone's exquisite taste in the musical domain cannot permeate that person's entire existence. Hope he is just under a temporary spell of Andrew's musicals. But such an outfit is a sign of disrespect for the audience, for the orchestra and consequently and unavoidably for himself.

  • @Curatica "Clownish" is in the eye of the beholder. Maybe he likes the whole Renaissance thing. A lot of people do; it made a pretty good comeback not too many years ago. As for it being "a sign of disrespect for the audience," that's just you making a harsh judgment based on your personal preferences. Get over your self-importance.

  • it takes balls to wear a shirt like that

  • veramente sublime

  • he probably doesn't even realise that he shakes his head. i didn't know that my head showed passion until i watched a recording of myself from a school concert... XD

  • i am speechless O_O

  • I can´t believe someone can wear that shirt and play the cello so beautifuly at the same time.

  • he could be naked or dressed up in a penguin costume and play the cello so beautifully

  • Wow, that tone quality is amazing!

  • Near perfect intonation and tone... although I think Peter Wispelwey has a better interpretation of the chords at 0:34 - 0:35 and 3:43 -- 3:44. (Weber's are perhaps a little fast). Contrary to a lot of people, I think Rostropovich's intonation is off and his rhythm a little erratic.

  • i love how he shakes his head angrily when he plays...lol. Brilliant cellist. :]

  • I just love that shirt!!

  • Hey,give him a break! I love his shirt! What a cellist! Superb technique and interpretation. His ease of facility is amazing. Most of us can only dream of playing like he does.

  • Phenomenal.

  • I've seen him play Elgar in real life, this guy is amazing! Except for his top that is... ;P

  • LOL! I love the conductor! But i dont understand his tempo its a great orchestra job to keep together. And the solo is so clean and so relaxed. If feels each note

  • is it just me or does his cello look tiny? Maybe it's just because the last recording of this I watched was Rostropovich.

or it could be the shirt.

ahahhaha, I'm not mean. It's beautifully played.

(And I agree about the conductor....... umm? tempo please?)

  • you are a fantastıc

  • I like it, it's very cool!

  • he must have amazingly strong hands, he doesn't look as though he is pressing at all and yet making this fantastic sound!!

  • How does he plays with such relaxation, it is amazing, really, I wish I can play like this guy later

  • First off, there's no such thing as "rushing" in a concerto, that's the beauty of it- the Orchestra and conductor follow the soloist. Second, professional level orchestra's NEVER follow conductors.. A basic four pattern is like an insult to pro's, they just need visual expression to convert to their styles. :P

  • i love the conductor

  • Wow... wtf is the Conductor doing??????? He should stop poppin' pills.

  • A bit lifeless, and he's rushing LOADS!

  • Seriously though, try tapping a rhythm to this, particularly at the start, it'll go way out after like 2 or 3 bars!

Plus that top looks stupid, and can't help his playing

  • Don't blame others for your inability to maintain a steady tempo.

  • Such interest in the music that man has! I play the cello, and I try to enjoy the music as much as possible too. You don't actually get that sweaty when playing the cello like that, but you do get sore arms and quite exhausted, ESPECIALLY when playing the 7 short russian army pieces by shostakovich!

  • what in the hell is that man wearing? it looks like it may interfere with the quality of his playing.

  • w.o.w. just recently i was blasted for not knowing this piece. but that's ok. i've played it before. well, i've sightread and stumbled through it before.

if i'm not mistaken it's in Book 10 of Suzuki cello studies??

  • lmfao this conductor is on crack

  • i like the way he screwed up the first scale, his mild look at 2:50, and the conductor who obviously didn't finish with the 2nd movement yet :)

  • i sware i cant ever follow this conductor. good thing the orchestra stayed together

    =D

  • I feel like the conductor cared more about looking good while conducting instead of actually conducting. ^.^'' Anyways, this is totally awesome! :D

  • well, it is haydn. Back in his time, no one exageratted anyting, except maybe their wigs...

  • looks like the conductor is on crack...

  • Love this cellist's playing and this piece!!!

  • Technically great, but it seems like he mostly concerned with technique. Musically it seems dry. I get the feeling that he is just playing to notes, and it is too fast for me to enjoy it. Its such a great piece...I'd rather hear it slowed down a notch.

  • what is up with that shirt?

  • I love his tone and overall excitement in his performance. Very entertaining to watch and hear :P.

  • Excellent playing!! Julian Lloyd Webber has always had amazing ability.

  • Who the hell is this conductor?! He really has to get fired. Yes, Webber has a great technique, I have the deepest respect for everybody who plays this concerto, especially in this way. Its so difficult, I think I go to practice scales for the next ten years before I begin with this.

  • HAYDN you are the bestt !!! ----H--A--Y--D--N---- GOD BLESS YOU

  • I couldn't follow that conductor if i tried. He reminds me of Giles Bandreth for some reason. ANy way, webber is fab!

  • its because many conductors in europe conduct ahead of the beat and purely there for aesthetic purposes. when your a conductor of a professional orchestra, they don't need a conductor, its just lead by the principal players

  • concerto trumpet é muito melhor simplesmente fantástico

  • I think he got that shirt because when you perform like that you get really sweaty, and that shirt looks loose, therefore, Mr. Webber won't get sweaty.

  • No, I think he bought it in the 70's and forgot to throw it way.

  • I needa get those skills and that shirt.

  • The conductor...he is pretty unusual...his style of conducting

  • Nice playing--but what's with the shirt Jules?!

  • Awesome technique! And clean, lively interpretation.
