The question isnt whether Texas can leave or not, its whether they can defend themselves from the US military. If Texas really wants it leave, it would have left already. Based on the tax benificary list, I think the negative beneficiary would leave the union rather than just conservative states. Also, if we did secede, Texans make up a VERY large portion of the US army (more than 20% even though we are less than 15% of population), and those US service members would probably be given leave to return to Texas in the case of peaceful secession (or possibly lead a coup if the USA dares to wage war on it's own citizens).

There was a secessionist movement that lasted 20 years but ultimately died out because people realized that unity under diversity was an asset they could only tout as a strong, vast nation. This Union is made up of 50 Sovereign states. Any one has the right to leave the Union if they so wish, like they did back in the first American civil war.

Ambiguous negotiations are possible, but this stipulation is not in the 1845 U.S. Joint Resolution on Texas Annexation or the Texas Ordinance of Annexation that contractually bound Texas to the U.S. The Texas Republic gave their forts, ports, harbors, navy, military weapons, magazines, etc. to the U.S. so they clearly weren't thinking about future manumission during the annexation process. No state has successfully seceded in 200 + years and it is just a sad secessionist fantasy.

States are free to define their political relationships. If union membership is no longer a fit for Texas, then Texas has the right to and should leave.
If Texas did leave the Union what are some of the possible scenarios? Would the US Government take Texas to court? Would the US Government sanction Texas? Would the US Government attack Texas to force them back into the Union? Or would it be "EASIER" than we all perceive?

In all seriousness, Texans and any state has every right to secede. Ours was a voluntary union, and if it's backed by force and coercion alone it is no longer a union, but an empire.

If Texas really wants it leave, it would have left already. Based on the tax benificary list, I think the negative beneficiary would leave the union rather than just conservative states. There are more blue states that have negative beneficiary than red states, so If anything, California, New Jersey and NY should leave the union.

Also, if we did secede, Texans make up a VERY large portion of the US army (more than 20% even though we are less than 15% of population), and those US service members would probably be given leave to return to Texas in the case of peaceful secession (or possibly lead a coup if the USA dares to wage war on it's own citizens).

Want to return to a manned space program in two years? Texas can help the US. We have a little place here called NASA probably renamed to TASA soon. It's just on the skirts of Houston. We'd be glad to do that for the US. We have a little launch center/space port here too, right on the Gulf. If Florida begins to charge you too much, we can probably come in sooner and on or under budget to help the US get humans back into space. Or, call Russia. I here they have a program. Not as close as Texas.

There is "Texas" and "the other 49 States" and it is fact. I have lived that fact every second of everyday since early 1978. Check for yourself. Secession of any state of the union is prohibited by the Supreme Court decision "Texas vs White et all" (1868). So basically Perry was calling for breaking the federal law. Hey. I am from India a diverse democracy like the US. 50 years ago my state wanted to secede from the then young Indian Union. There was a secessionist movement that lasted 20 years but ultimately died out because people realized that unity under diversity was an asset they could only tout as a strong, vast nation. We are Indians, we all live on the sub-continent, we share diffrn cultures, and that makes us strong. The USA is a role model for our constitution and federalism. PLEASE DON'T SECEDE

@PCHSRAIDER09 No, the 50 states are NOT sovereign. They cannot produce their own currency and each state is required to answer to Congress. States may not secede from the union, either. We fought a war over that issue 150 years ago, and the secessionists lost.

I've been asking secessionists for years where it's written in the U.S. and Texas Constitutions or Annexation Treaty that Texas can secede and the reply is always: "Duh! I don't know." The vast majority of Texans love the USA and don't take secession seriously. I don't know why some are so passionate about the empty promises of disunity.

Well, I think you're wrong on being able to secede legally. Where is it written? Of course you can hold a convention and vote to secede, but success would probably result in war, economic, social and financial disasters. I've seen terrible oppression, war and death and they should be avoided if possible. Ambiguous negotiations are possible, but this stipulation is not in the 1845 U.S. Joint Resolution on Texas Annexation or the Texas Ordinance of Annexation that contractually bound Texas to the U.S. The Texas Republic gave their forts, ports, harbors, navy, military weapons, magazines, etc. to the U.S. so they clearly weren't thinking about future manumission during the annexation process. No state has successfully seceded in 200 + years and it is just a sad secessionist fantasy.

All they seem to put forth is smoke and mirrors. These machinations may trick some politicians, the media and general public, but others see right through their house-of-cards and topple it with ease, especially legal scholars. Why not leave? I live in Texas and we have the right. I have taken plenty of Texas history and the United States signed an agreement when we became a state that we could leave at any time. Honestly I think we could do much better as The Republic of Texas.

Every state has the constitutional right to secede. The people of the U.S. have the contitutional right to take back our government." We the people" can march up the the white House and demand the government to do what we want. It is unfortunate the most americans have no idea what the constitution is. Instead people will sit by and watch the U.S. collapse, and then break off into independent states; much like the Soviet Union. The fall of the U.S. started in 1971 and the end is here.

Texas v. White, 1869, the Supreme Court determined that states do not have the right to secede from the Union.

@ddlivingston That case had no Constitutional basis and only said that no secession had taken place even though they had to be re-admitted to the Union making one huge Paradox. No where in the Constitution does it mention Secession which means it falls under the 10th Amendment: States rights.

If Texas secedes will they control immigration? Consider all states are sovereigns that chose to join the Union, then all states have power to control immigration, but as members of the Union, must recognize citizens of the Union as citizens of Texas.
Aliens from foreign countries (Mexico) have the human right to leave, but no human right to be here illegally. Mexicans have civil rights waiting for them in Mexico, so why are Mexicans marching in the USA for civil rights?
