This is one of the most depressing pieces of music I've ever heard. I absolutely love it. My favorite recording of this is done by Kogan, Lazunov, and Svetlanov.
Probably my most, absolute favorite Rachmaninov piece EVER. He is the MASTER of musical emotion. For a piece, 1st 2nd and 3rd movement to make me feel so...there are no words...it's just magnificent. He is the reason that I play violin and piano.
To think we could have recordings of Rachmaninoff and Horowitz playing his suites if only sony never denied Rachmaninoff these recordings and understood his music a little more. but, Rachmaninoff did make countless recordings just for 1 piece so sony did put a lot of money into his recordings. especially the ones that couldn't be used.
YESSSSSSSSSSSS. that piano part in the background is so beautiful proceeding 7:17. LOVE IT. i first fell in love with it when michelle kwan skated to it in 1998
This is well performed - but imo lacks the intensity, emotion, passion and musicality that one hears from Kogan, Lazunov and Svetlanov! :-))

This is the best musical expression of sorrow and elegy that exists.

I see what you mean, KiraCohen, but my favorites are still end of "Vocalise" and end of the slow movement [2] Piano concerto, 2.
