Thank's for the memories. I bought a FT101 for a pal while I was on leave up in Pennang back in 1968. It was great just taking it out of its brand new box just to check it over even though it was not mine. Great radios. We had a FTDX 400 in the club station and that was super.
I have a Mk1 version that I am trying to bring back to life. Receives fine, but won't transmit. Everyone tells me to get rid of it and buy something newer, but I hate to. I like the older technology.. where you don't need a computer to operate the damn thing!
I have a 101ZD in a box somewhere, have repaired a few too. A nice practical radio to maintain, have been amazed at the fun it has been bringing these back from the dead. The FT102 is still my favourite but with the relays etc they can be a headache to look after. FWIW the FT902 although similar to look at is more expensively built, people tend to overlook them on Ebay.
I always wanted one of these, but they were introduced in the early 80s when British industry was going down the pan and jobs were never secure enough for me to finance it. The fact they're still in use today speaks volumes about them really. A bit of drift in the first half hour, but fine afterwards.
One of the best HF rigs ever made! It ranks right up there with the Kenwood TS 520s, 530s, 820s, 830s, Yaesu FT 902DM, FT 101 series and the legendery FT 102. I had a Kenwood TS 830s and i miss it so i am getting the Yaesu Ft 101ZD as it is almost the same rig. The fancy rigs made today are ok but they just dont hold up like the rigs made back in the day. I wonder how many Flex 5000s will be around 25 to 30 years from now?
I have an old 101ZD MKIII also. Excellent Radio. It beats my new Yaesu 857D hands down in both transmitted and received audio. My dad bought it new in the early 80's. It is also a radio that you know when you pick it up... A real boat anchor..
I owned an 857 for about 6 months, before selling it.... and buying this in it's place!! I originally had a 902DM, and kicked myself about 3 hours after I sold it!
@g0fhm I recently bought a 902dm on ebay, it was butchered but now it's restored to original. I would'nt sell or trade this fine peice of kit for anything.
i got one of these good old rigs in good nick with vfo,i have had 2 new radios and this old lady it tops .. jeff ..
