It sounds like he was obsessively in love with this girl, or his idealized version of this girl (I'm gonna soak your hair in bleach) and she left him so he killed her out of some feeling of "If I can't have you no one can," and because he couldn't stand the idea that she wasn't what he wanted in her so he'd rather keep her all to himself and pretend that he was the only one who actually knew her and everyone else was wrong (You're no mystery to me.)

@Kanu03 Part of the *brilliance* of Andrew McMahon's songwriting is that, yeah, the lyrics are about marriage, but that they also can be interpreted as being about something totally different, i.e., kidnapping. The lyrics are just so clever, and deeper than having only one possible meaning, so unless Andrew straight up says what it's about in an interview we're shit out of luck!
