Because to win an Oscar for best song in a musical [or any movie for that mater] , you have to have a completely original song and not one that has been on the stage. I guess this is one they decided to change and submit; I don't think they won the Oscar for best song though. It's a pity too, because I like this scene. I saw the stage production in 1982/83 and I don't remember much about it. But, I'm 4'10" and I hate that they left that song out of the movie. BOO-HOO :-)

I fell in love with This Cassie before you all were probably born. She is one of the reasons you all even know this as a stage production. Save the snobbishness-- stage work is neither better or worse, just different. This scene rocks, and Alison michael douglas are hot!! Michael Bennett is was probably thrilled that his work was seen and appreciated by the number of people who saw this version in the movie theatres. I've seen others-- this still rocks!!!

When a chorus line came out onstage it beat Chicago hands down (out the same year) as a movie Chicago works better.

I have to disagree. I thought the "Music and Mirror" was a far more passionate metaphor for the stage experience.

"Let Me Dance for You" has "showstopper" written all over it, but it is too canned and lacks the presence of the stage show numbers. I feel the same way about the montages being omitted for "Surpise."
