Some types of comedy benefit from laugh tracks, others don't. There is definately sketches from That Mitchell and Webb look which would just come as abit weird without a laugh track.
Actually - to contribute to the laugh track conversation - I think you'll find that most BBC comedies with laughter are filmed in front of live audiences, so the laughter is genuine, not added in later. I guess having an audience there makes it easier for comedians to make timing judgements... : )
Also canned laughter always makes me wonder whether I would have laughed as much if the laughter wasn't there. Without the laughter it forces the show to stand on its own merit.
no new british sitcoms rarely have canned laughter, the older ones do but it's the ammount. there is a massive difference between one foot in the grave and friends.
yeah thats right, they either do it in front of a studio audience or nothing at all. I dont get the point of canned laughter, if its funny people will laugh, you dont need fake laughter to tell you that !
most definalte none givs a crap but I decided to watch young ones, n heard caned laughter, I was like "yuk" but kinda got used to it, I heard somewere, that fake laughter, if people hear it, tends to make people watchinhg more likely to laugh, o I saw an american show for one episode didnt have fake laughter, and ye suked
No gareth, you're wrong, canned laughter is lowbrow and is for idiots. The fact that this show didnt use it is a good thing. Don't get me wrong, I love the new series, but was dissapointed that they used the laffs.

A laugh track gives the illusion that bad comedy is better than it actually is, but adds nothing to good comedy. In fact a laugh track often detracts from really good comedy by obscuring subtler moments. Comedy aficionados usually resent laugh tracks because they remove the thought process and tell you when to laugh. In other words a laugh track treats the audience like they are morons. Unfortunately this is bad comedy and would benefit from a laugh track.
Why does he get thumbs down for a perfectly reasonable comment... even if you don't agree? and really... where was the laugh-track in The Office. Or "Curb your Enthusiasm". Laugh-tracks are cues for the dummies to know where it is OK to laugh. You don't believe for a second that Mitchell or Webb care for them, do you? It's the production team that doesn't trust its viewers who insisted on it.

that's a stupid, snobby pretentious idea. Backing laughter is not for when you "don't know when to laugh"... it just makes a sketch funnier .. everyone likes to laugh along with other people.
MILES better than Catherine Tate and Little britain, and Ruddy hell its Harry and Paul. Actually have diferent sketches with different and clever punchlines

1. Does "The Simpsons" have a laugh-track?
2. Have you ever needed one in order to laugh at it?
3. Is it too early to say "case closed"?
If you need permission from others to laugh at something, bad taste or not, you don't have a mind of your own.

Once you know it's a recording it ceases to be "laughing with others". They just press play on a tape. Kind of condescending, don't you think?
