3. tthey do have toxins so wash your hands with filter water no soap after you handle him don t touch anything till wash your hands they cost 6.00 at building 19 put in at least a 3.5 gallon
He's so cute! I am getting a couple of these tomorrow but I was wondering if they like coming out of the tank/being handled? I've read that they do but that they also have toxins in their skin?
@LondonFirefli You can handle them rarely, when cleaning tank etc. They do not like being handled. Wash your hands with cold water, no soap before touching them, and wash with soap afterwards, they are toxic and have very sensitive skin. Hope this helps.
@Sinanxis Don't think flakes. Most shops carry tubiflex worms. Its a fish food shaped in cubes, they are freeze dried and must soak in water to soften, be sure to break into smaller pieces if need be depending on the size of the newt. This food is convieniant but be warned not all newts will take to it. I'd say about half of mine thrived on it. The other half wouldnt touch it. Some shops also carry newt pellets, or can be bought online, again 50/50.
@Mexxi0 Trying leaving them for a couple of days with no interaction whatsoever, then try and feed them, preferably if the newt is in the water. Don't touch your newt whilst trying to feed him. Some newts, won't eat if they are feeling stressed.
I made a little aquarium for him and seperated him from the group for some days and just lay the food on a rock nearby and than he started eating again. And now he's back with the others :P
@PsychedelicSanta I've since learned never to touch them, and just leave them. Just leave them to their own devises, As you would a White Cloud. I bought my newt Christmas 2004, and regrettably, we all know this is the year she goes... She loves being underwater. : ) Just wish I'd given her an even better life.
I had one 2 of theese :[ I had them 2 years but then the male jumped out of its tank (it wasn't closed bcz I was feeding them and forgot to close it) he jumped out and I was looking for it 2 months, then I found him in the corner of my room already dry :[, and then the female after 1 year there was multivitamine for my beardie near the tank, and there was a small open hole in the tank and she jumped out and falled into it :[[ I miss her really :[[ they don't sell more newts :'[
PLEASE REPLY THIS COMMENT ANY OF YOU PEOPLE: I got Frozen Dried BLood worms, so should i Freeze it because my Fire Bellied newt Wont Eat it.. Or should i buy the original ones of the blood worms????
Hey guys, i adore newts..I just adore them :] Can anyone give me a store name and a list of things needed to care for a newt? I live in Cali by the way...incase they have newts here or not.
I have 1 newt about 8 months to a year old in a tank with fish so its quite hard to feed him without the fish stealing the food would it be bad for him to bring him out to feed all the time he just doesnt seem to be eating all that much
@bmwdougie you shouldn´t keep the newt in the same tank as other species.it will bring problems to the newt and fish and they can die.try to separate them and see if the newt eats.if he does you have to get a new tank :)
they don't bite absolutely! they are pacific animals and, yes, you can hanlde them but only if you have to put them in a momentary pool to change the water, they don't like to be handled.
The water height depends on your pool size, btw it must be at least 10 cm and besides you have to put any kind of platform so they can emerge when they need to.
I have two pleurodeles newts, they are very nice creatures =)
could you tell me some details about salamander??i want to buy one just like this one and i want to know if they are poisonous, what they eat, how long do they live??i would be really happy if you answer me :)
you should get small crickets, otherwise they'll die in the tank or be really annoying until they die. Big ones a newt will not eat because they are too big to fit in their mouths.
I use to have one in my fish tank, he always climbed to the roof and got all dried up, I never saw him eat. Sadly he died when I got a freshwater puffer.
Trying leaving them for a couple of days with no interaction whatsoever, then try and feed them, preferably if the newt is in the water. Don't touch your newt whilst trying to feed him. Some newts, won't eat if they are feeling stressed.
I did use my hands. I wouldn't like to guess a time as I've seen them out of the water for days at a time, however the newt may have entered the water without me noticing. He is getting moisture from the java moss, however this newt in particular prefers having dry skin, which is rather unusual for this specie.
Ahhh I see...I read up on them and a lot of sources say that it's not a good idea to handle them too much, which is why I'm a bit hesitant to pick them up because I don't really know to what extent stuff on my hands would affect them o_O
I don't recommend handling them. I have a few of these guys and if I pick them up they cower and attempt to escape. This newt in particular is very relaxed and will eat comfortably from my hand, I don't know why. You may have to pick them up if cleaning out the setup, or for any other reason. If you are going to pick them up, put your hand in cold de-chlorinated water and rub them about, as you would do when washing your hands.
Oh okay, 'cause I've been using tubey suction things to clean the bottom of the tank and I use forceps to move stuff around for the most part. & Yeah I usually rinse my hands in dechlorinated water whenever i work with my aquatic pets just in case.
There ain't no prettier sight than an eating newt. Might go a little further and say that life is worth living ONLY because we can actually see news eat.
That particular newt i've had for around 2 years now, I know people who have had this specie for over 25 years, and they can live well over that if people are telling the truth. I'm not sure how new you are to caudata, but if you need any help feel free to ask.
I have a lighter fire belly. However she is young and still growing, and gets very stressed when handled.
Newts always get stressed when handled so it should be avoided. Human's body temperature is too high for them and human skin is too salty. Salamanders have really sensitive skin. Nice video though. :)
I've owned newts for a protracted time, Im fully responsive to all the fundamentals. Try feeding one of your guys on your hand, you will most likely find he will not eat. As said in other posts, this newt is unlike all my others, she seems happy to eat on my hand, a newt will not eat if in trepidation, a newt will seek escape over appetite, unlike many other animals.
Thanks for the advice. She is a very well adjusted newt, I can feed her on my hand with no problems. The only newt out out of around 20 I have that lets me do this. This newt is the only fire belly I've seen that prefers land over water also. In the years I've had her, only a handful of times have I seen her walking the ocean floor.

Buy tubifex worms out any pet shop that sells all types of tank fish.
The moss logistically speaking, will very definitely be sold in the shops selling reptiles, mantids, scorpions, frogs and the like.
