  • i love it

  • when he messed up the 'hallelujah' ... omg i wet myself laughing :')

  • is he on his way to the shower

  • keep your X Factor sh*te. Proper singers these two. :-)

  • Anyone care to explain why he's wearing a bath robe?

  • @ElementIU2 He'd just done a bit from his Judy Garland tribute, dressed in drag.

  • Took me until recently to find out he's gay.

    Wow

  • quite a crowd...we got the born -agains with the rapturous handwaves...the gay pride flag and some white wine cougars...masterful marketing. of course it helps to be talented

  • I don't like how he sings through his nose but love this song.

  • Troppo bella questa performance! Bravi

  • BUCKLEY OWNS.

  • Why the f**k is he in a bathrobe O.o

  • @Titakoooo bahahahahaha!!!!!! lmbo! but, its true lololol

  • @Titakoooo If memory serves he was just wearing a bikini or some sort of fancy dress oufit underneath for another performance later

  • @Titakoooo Because he can be :D

  • Genius is a bit strong. Bob Dylan IS a genius.

  • LOL is Rufus in a housecoat?

  • she seems SO tense...

  • I haven't heard martha sing in such a powerful manner before, she should do it more often.

  • @subonad you are so right. check out the version of David Bowies "Heroes" Martha did with Adrian Belew...its somewhere here on Youtube...totally worth finding

  • he seems to have fun singing this time. When he messed up he just went with it.

  • @TheK12H I dont think HE messed up, her voice was shot, and that's why he let her do the verse again!

  • Ese Albornoz...

  • Great performance, but did he, like, order room service afterwards? What's with the white robe?! LOL!!!

  • what a cool family

  • she sucks and she cant sing oh wait thats what i ment

  • watch?v=kk18OIT0ZTU

  • Hi, Check out Louise singing "Hallelujah"

    youtube.com/watch?v=e2eaeEToKrU

  • the singing guy at 1:17 is just so fucking sexy <3

  • the dude @ 1:17 is super hot

  • A beautiful song..... when sung properly.

  • Świetne !!!

  • OMG i was loving his voice with her harmonies, but when she started singing solo, say what you want, but personally, in my opinion, i thought it sounded fucking awful =/

  • gänsehaut pur!!! einfach nur geil!

  • wow that is just lovely, their voices really complement each other - he is low, bass and deep, she has a lovely higher soprano tone, just lovely mixed and offsetting eachother, a nice contrast . I enjoyed that. sweet!

  • that was wonderful!! it's interesting because here, martha sounds kinda rough and throaty like marianne faithfull, but i just uploaded the two of them singing this at the strathmore last august and she sounds very clear and pure. in any case, thanks! this is really lovely and intimate, despite the huge crowd.

  • i have to let her out on stage or my Mom will kill me ---- lol

  • the guy singing along at 1:17...hilarious

  • martha r really good, she soundslike bonny taylor, a little bit. because the rough voice :)

i voted for i like it

  • Oh my God.

  • i love her voice is awesommee

  • Why is he in a dressing gown?

  • @freedomxbeautyxpeace Maybe he just woke up

  • WOW!!!!!

  • i feel like this is almost completely due to the sound being off to the video, but martha seems a little off.. probably due to the cold like the other person said though

  • Why are the people in the audience so dirty?? And Rufus is so clean in his white bathrobe.. Lol.

  • shit-sandwich

  • are they brother and sister or wife and husband?

  • @compassft brother and sister

  • @compassft

    brother and sister

  • @lubje25

    thank you!

  • @compassft rufus couldn't be gayer x

  • Ha! You douche kits are funny! Rufas and Martha are about as good as it gets. Maybe this was an off performance, but it's clearly cold, and I can almost bet they had a crap stage mix. The robe? I think it's hilarious! If you don't think they have any talent, then why are you cruising YT for Rufas vids? If you think this is bad, then you are clearly what is wrong with the music industry! Leonard Cohen is a genius, and this song is about as perfect as it gets. Jeff Buckley's version helped start

  • This is so awesome! They work so amazing together!!!!

  • eh.. no comments on rufus.. love martha.. but are u serious rufus?

  • oh god, she sounds awful. my ears hurt.

  • What the hell is he wearing? o_O

  • @Pumpmos he must have had a wild night of gay sex--its a bathrobe

  • HA HA HA Love this sissy mary funny how you really don't need talent today

  • anyone who wants to really know what this song is about rent...check out at the library, its a riveting music biography of leonard cohen over a span of 60 years with musicians such as the "very talented" rufus and martha, along with nick cave, bono, edge, linda christensen, the handsome family and others who really portray his music beautifully and actually tell the stories without others second guessing cohens real message. from the beatles to joplin to punk...yes punk!

  • Mega gene pool.

  • when will people realize rufus can't carry a tune---check him out with sean lennon on 'this boy"--it is pure horrible--are people tone deaf

  • @iceaxe56 ..not Rufus is the Problem,if you listen precisely, the voices under him,he has the highest tune, are not not correct,in relation to the guitar tuning, maybe you are tone deaf?!

  • @silasleander no he just can't sing worth a damn

  • @iceaxe56 Nop but it seems that you are. He is amazing! You are just retarded or you have really bad taste in music

  • @jonisen96 yeah me and 10 million others-you are either gay or just weird--amazing my ass--this guys dad must still feed him cash he could'nt fill a phone booth at 1 of his concerts

  • @iceaxe56 He may have better and worse performances, but he can carry a tune, has a unique voice, and writes some startlingly original music. Not to mention, he's a formidable pianist (not necessarily here, but check out Songs for Lulu especially as well as his other albums).

I'm less than impressed with version of Hallelujah, but the man is one of the most talented singer/songwriters today.

  • both of them did a geat job and i love her voice it's just wonderful

  • @vancanman2 they're actually Canadian and American. Rufus was born in NY, Martha in Canada. Their father is American

  • Why's he wearing a bathrobe...

  • @arab4lifemuslim4ever

He did a song after this one dressed as a woman, he is wearing a dress during this song, but covered up as not to ruin the surprise of his next song.

  • I think Rufus is the best singer of em, but i totaly getting toutcht when she starting to sing.

  • Comment removed

  • @vancanman2 Hate to be Captain Buzzkill but he's an American born but both a US/Canadian citizen.

  • @TheWesleyCotter I stand corrected. However, it's stil puzzling. Thank you for the info.

  • @vancanman2 it's not an american flag. it is the flag of the bretagne, which is a region of france.

  • @Feuerkindjana I've been corrected about Rufus being American-Canadian, but don't tell me that's a Breton flag. I know a Breton flag when I see one.

  • @vancanman2 The Wainwrights grew up in the States.

  • @headstock48

    They grew up in Quebec

  • @vancanman2 Rufus has duel citiizienship...

  • @vancanman2 They're both Canadian-American (their father was American), and a number of the other performers (including one of the headliners) were American, so it makes sense to have an American flag to symbolize the diversity of the performers playing.

  • They're such a musically inspirational family that it makes my soul soar every time I listen to either one of their songs :')

  • Wow, think what family get togethers are like in family.

  • he looks like JD from scrubs...

  • is it just me or the audio is out of sync?

  • @jsdupont

    way out of sync

  • seriously, Martha can't sing that high and she realized it halfway through.

Rufus is unbelievable as always though

  • This song is transcendent - AMAZING GRACE anyone?

  • I love her and her brother!! They are brilliant singers both of them!!

  • sorry to say that but Martha's voice is a pain. the real talent here is RUFUS. martha's just yowling uhh...

  • Fantastic, Martha!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • this family is just ...... truly amazing and talented. <3

  • This guy and his sis are awesome!

  • why the bath robe and whos the slut?

  • @topshoter2007 The robe as he is in drag underneath and pops out a few Judy Garland songs. And the woman is his fabulous Sister Martha

  • @kindredzone THaNKS

  • i love you martha

  • Rufus - Him, I love. Beautiful voice and such a talented man. Her - not so much. She's ok singing just harmony, but pretty horrible on her own. Rufus, when he performs this song on his own, is sublime. Listen to him sing it on the Irish tv program youtube and on the Shrek soundtrack. Superb renditions. He should always perform it solo, without inviting Sis onto the stage.

  • Rufus Wainwright is just fine, but Martha Wainwright is a much better singer. Erratic, but much more expressive, especially in terms of phrasing. Rufus' first verse is just embarrassing, sounding like a karaoke singer in terms of phrasing. Martha's far from being at her best here, probably just flat-out the wrong key for her.

  • Well, it's all subjective anyway. I much prefer Rufus. I think his voice has far more range and just more to it in all aspects. To say Martha is a better singer is only your view and certainly a valid one for you to express, but again it's not a truism, just your opinion. But I don't think she can compare to Rufus' talent. I just don't believe her voice is anywhere near as strong nor can she hit the same range of low and high notes as Rufus does with ease.

  • "was that your verse?"

    hahaha funny

  • women are not shallow. you're probably a pig and all you think this song is about sex. The writer of this is not lying, it is, but its showing how its a beautiful thing and King David and stuff. I love this song, I like him singing and I have come to like her as a singer.

  • @punkprincess2012 Hallelujah is Hebrew for 'Praise Yahweh' or Jehovah, aka God's name, Cohen had no idea what he was writing about.

  • @Carevillepeasant : yeah, I think someone who just passed half his life reading the bible and the other half writing songs about it more complex than half the french poetry has absolutely NO IDEA what the word Hallelujah means. Please, read at least wikipedia before making attempts to be clever. It was just ridiculous.

  • @punkprincess2012 but you're aware that quite a lot of this song is about sex, right? like, not in a smutty or gratuitous way or anything, but it has plenty of beautiful sexual imagery

  • @padam4

Exactly! And why is sex a bad thing now? It's clearly not being depicted as something dirty in this song. :/

  • @punkprincess2012 "And remember when I moved in you

The holy dove was moving too

And every breath we drew was Hallelujah" How is that not about sex? haha. I'm a woman and I think that the fact that parts of this song is about sex, but in a beautiful way, is just amazing! I love the way that he can turn some very dirty lyrics into some beautiful, graceful, something you almost wished you had.

  • @DominiquesUniques no it isnt about sex you dumb ass its about god moving into david. i mean really what else would the holy dove be?

  • @punkprincess2012 Gawd! If you were more incoherent, you'd be a killer.

    Live and let live, man.

  • ok not being funny or anythin - rufus i think ur the best singer ever and i adore you and i actually qwite like martha - but she sounds like a dying animal in this video . . .

    kills rufus's brilliance!

  • I hate how the sound and video don't match. i love this song and wish i could have captured the emotion a little better

  • Wonderfool Rufus&Martha! Great Leonard Cohen!!!

  • pięęęknie !!;***

  • I really like this song. It is so beautiful. I sing this song too on my Emilydogcat channel :)

  • The song does have spiritual and religious connotations hence: 1. "Pleased the lord" 2. "Your Faith was strong" 3. "You say I took the name in vain." 4. "There's a blaze of light in every word, it doesn't matter which you heard, the holy or the broken hallelujah" 5. "I'll stand before the lord of song, with nothing on my tongue but hallelujah." There certainly is a sexual element to it though, you're right.

  • @lawrietimson1

    You're right dude!

  • it has a religious background dipshit. it's about king david. go read the bible.

    2 Samuel 11

  • I hear the Biblical references (you are so clever).

Leonard Cohen says in his autobiography that this song is overt about sex. What a fraud you are to claim to revere Emerson and Thoreau as "God's" (I'm sure you miss THAT irony) and then call someone you don't know a "dipshit". Women are so shallow. sigh

  • This song is both about sex and spirituality.

"There was a time you let me know/What's really going on below" can both be a carnal reference, and a reference to hell. And the sexuality is overt in "But remember when I moved in you/And the holy dove was movin' too/And every breath we drew was hallelujah".

Religion and sex mix incredibly well as themes. One represses the other, but together they amplify each other. Just look at Prince.

  • ahaha. that awesome. i love how you use dipshit and bible. i agree with you

  • hahahah seriously. and the song is called hallelujah. DUHHH

  • It's NOT just about King David. David is a metaphor. The song also references Sampson and Deliliah (Judges 16). In the David metaphor, man betrays fellow man, as David sent his mistress' husband to his death. In the Sampson metaphor, woman betrays man, as Deliliah seduces Sampson's secret of his strength, emasculates him by cutting his hair, and sells him into slavery. It's an extremely complex song. To say it's just a religious song about King David is totally missing the point!

  • Did I say it was just about King David? No.

And yeah. It's a hyperbole. And I call people dipshits when they make stupid claims on youtube. Relaxez-vous.

  • PS: half of that response was to that sexist ass mikedowd66

  • and yeah, obviously it's a LOT about sex, I thought that went unstated. I was trying to claim that it had a religious background to it.

  • agree

  • Yes Jeff, this is a bonified song. This song was written by the great Leonard Cohen. This video actually sucks but that doesn't take away from this wonderful song.

  • Is this serious? Really? Is this a bonafide song? I've never heard it, and the video seems faked...

  • 0:42 epic fail

  • Kathryn Williams from the "Relations" album. nuff said x

  • Al'right ev'body listen the one with Kurt Nilson, you'll love it for sure, interesting interpretation.

Oh.. some thumbs down for me :) . I wish I were you and could enjoy the song without hurting my ears.

  • Me quedo con la voz de la hermana y los discos de Rufus!!!! vaya par! Bravo.

  • give me Rufus anyday - when they sing together it's like they;re having a fight that he's afraid to win!! jaby

  • Martha Wainwright has a very unique voice, in a good way

  • definately have to agree

  • I don't know why there's so many people who dislike this video, it's such a cheerful vidoe, and from the crowd's impression they seemed to love it and it was really funny to watch, so thumbs up to them :)

  • Again another amazing song.

I don't get what people don't like about it. It can't be too drab at that time of day hence why i think he jazzed it up a bit lol. Loved the final word by Rufus as well, quality entertainers.

  • Lovely robe Rufus.

  • why is everyone so amazed when martha starts singing? is it because she's improvising?

  • What a ponce! he could've got dressed and made some effort to sing the song rather than turn it into a Music Hall act

  • brothers, if you don't want to play and sing....stay at home!

  • Two runaways from mental ward (one even in a bathrobe) are butchering a great song with their beautiful voices but terrible rendition.

  • @lakedolfin You're out of your mind if you think that Leonard Cohen's version is better. They took a wonderful song, that was sung by a horrible singer (sorry Leonard ) and made it beautiful.

  • This version is much better than the original and its not Jeff buckley either its leonard cohen and jeff's version isn't that great at all mediocre @ best ,plus he's in a bathrobe i don't think he's was going for perfecrtion , but he hit close !!!!

  • Right!

  • what's the white robe for? Was this on a really cold day?

  • At that time Rufus was doing a Judy Garland project and beforehe dressed up as Judy he was wearing this white robe. Search : Rufus Wainwright Glastonbury Get Happy!! :D

  • Wait, Wait, WAIT!

    Is he wearing...a...bath robe?

  • This is aweosme, I'm seeing Louden Wainwright tonight :)

  • delightful. Interesting to watch two distinct talents maneurver the stage.

  • thats what i was wondering shaze

  • Marthas hot.

  • Simply Brilliant , Love the Woman.

  • I'm sorry I clicked the wrong thumb! :( I love it too!

  • Rufuz zingz quite ztrangze

  • he sure can sing but the hippy to she looks little bit strange but damn she can sing

  • Not bad, but he should be professionel enough to keep the words in mind :)

    but hes got a great voice,so 5stars

  • great song great singers

  • why is roof wearing tht?

  • me neither

  • honestly , she's better to do back vocals then lead singer

  • rufus is gay, marthas not his wife.

  • fools holding their hands up in some sort of reverence...

    This song is about sex.

And what the hell is rufus doing on the piano anyway?
