  • There are MANY different accents in Newfoundland! It just depends on which part of the island you're from.

  • Cool! I wish there were more native Newfoundlanders in Canadian television. Love how unique it is in North America.

  • i didnt know Gibberish is considered a language

  • Omg, he's trying to rip it's eyelids off while speaking in Latin!

  • I'm from Nova Scotia, And I can only understand if I really pay attention! but I totally got what he was saying the second time I listened to it! i wish I had that accent!(;

  • that dog is like a teddy bear so cute

  • I've heard the people that settled in Newfoundland brought with them traces of Gaelic and since they were isolated on an island for so long from the rest of Canada, kept it and that's why they speak the way they do. This true?

    P.S. That dog is beautiful.

  • @lotusflower281 it's true to a certain extent you're right. As an Irish student from Galway my Linguistics and Irish traditions lecturer always uses the Newfoundland accent as an example to the way words and accents change throughout time. Newfoundland seems to be one of the only accents where the Irish immigrants have passed along the way they spoke at the time of immigration and it appears to have stuck, as for the Gaelic, I don't think so it's a dying language in our own country unfortunately

  • @lotusflower281 you might be thinking of Cape Breton....

  • love how they say "daggs" like a pikey

  • @AColonDashSix english irish settled there and they sound retarded.. "whhaatch doon ovder thur" i work with a newfie

  • @AColonDashSix Oh, dogs. Sure, I like dags. I like caravans more

  • Fuckin' knew Hot Fuzz would be linked to this.

  • We talk a bit differently on the west coast :P

  • Any help on what the hell this guy says 0:00 -0:04 I can't believe this accent is in Canada. Darn newfies

  • @bloodymetal2222

"Oh that mouth! Oh what a big old mutt - if I had them teeth then I'd be alright!"

I find this easy to understand, but then, being Englsih, we're exposed to quite a range of accents and dialects.

  • @hombrerelents That was the easiest part!

  • @bloodymetal2222 he says "oh (look at the) mouth, what a big old mouth. if i had them teeth now it would be alright, look." "ohlada mot, wadda big ol' mot now eff i ad dem teet now i be alright luh"

  • Dat's a nice lookin dog, luh.

  • I wonder what the dog was saying...

  • I'm from British Columbia, and I could hardly understand what he was saying. Cool accent

  • it differs from town to town, one town might sound like british snobs and a town 15 min away might sound like irish drunks lol.

  • @TheBuilder22 I'd love to know what a 'British snob' sounds like! Presumably you mean received pronunciation?

  • I understood this man fine, but what a crazy and interesting accent. I'm British btw.

  • Too cool. XD

  • I find Cape Breton and Newfie accents kinda sound like Irish accents. Well, depending what part of the island the Newfie is from.

  • @Zero11270 Cape Breton or Caper accent is more similar to Scottish than the Newfoundland counterpart, especially the Western and Industrial sub-categories.

The Newfoundland Accent is mainly based on England's West Country and Ireland's Cork, Kilkenney, Wexford, and Waterford counties.

  • no he said "the dentist is going to take them out one of those days and give them to me, ya know?" lol Talking about the dog's teeth, not MDMA lol

  • Umm, okay this aint how a fkin newfoundlander talks

  • @angela0715 There are many dialects across the island, so I wouldn't be so sure..

  • My dog is part Newfoundland! He's the sweetest most adorable dog in the world!

  • looks like he grabs the dogs eye

  • Sounds a bit like west country English.

  • how the hell do newfie's understand eachother!!! i didnt understand a word he said lol

  • hahaahah this is so funny, i loves my home town<3

  • pretty good, i like it

  • LOL my boyfriend is Newfie and here i am from New Brunswick haha and so he talks fast when i want him too and Ryan he would be like yapping and i would say what? and he said you dont understand a word am saying you didnt understand a word i said did yea darling LOL

  • Apologies for poor written west country accent. Yeh, I know Mr Roberts is Canadian, and not actually from here, but his accent is identical to West Country U.K. where no doubt his ancestors came from, there are Roberts and Lewis's around these parts nowadays. Its interesting that there was an 'Hingston and Whiteway' shipping company in the late 19th century who had ships sailing to Newfoundland from S. Devon, some of which were built nearby in Ringmore, Shaldon also in Newfoundland

  • @banjcyco the accent in Newfoundland was cradled by the seclusion of the island. they are Irish descendants (obviously lol). The rest of Canada had to mingle between Irish, British, Scottish, French, eastern Europe (Slavic languages) and the rest of Europe. I guess bringing the world the North American accent. I love the Irish accent. Scottish is funniest though

  • @NATEandtheMONKEY Only St. John's and the Southren Shore of the Avalon Pennisula (commonly referred to as the south shore) have particularly strong/dominating Irish influences. Although Irish is present, and even quite powerful in other regions, the greater majority of Newfoundlanders (whether or not the celtic obessed crowd like it) come from England, and almost entirely the West Country (Bristol, Somerset, Poole). Banjcyco's comment makes a lot of sense, and has more historical grounding.

  • @actuallywhocares yes you're right. i wouldn't have thought so as (like you said) everyone i've met from the rock claims to be irish. my main point was meant to be a possibility as to why after however many generations, he still has it.

  • @NATEandtheMONKEY Oh, you were totally right about the seclusion of the Island and it's role in the dialect. Thats a perfectly sound thing to say. I was just responding to the "irish descendants" part. Alot of a people out of St. John's claim to be Irish whether they are or not. People on South Shore most likely are, just like people to the North are almost certainly English and people out in Codroy, Scottish. It's only in really town where people care enough to make the distinction though.

  • did he say his dog took MDMA ?

  • @biggrigga

    "He's gon' take one dem MDM n' A, y'know?"

    CANNOT UNHEAR

  • LORD TUNDERIN JESUS B'Y I SHORE DO TALK SOME STUPID.

  • I be frum Deb'n, u.k. an I reck'n Mr Lewis Roberts be frum Bristol way (up the road a bit). or in Zomerzet. I lives in Tinmuf (Teignmouth) an' if you wants to ear zum Debn, an brush up on yer lingo yoom best be comin over yer an youl be flabbergasted at thzimilara'ies. Now if you wants a proper laff and 'ear-zum dialect I suggests you tunes into We7 an get a lug'ole full o' the 'WURZELS', Oo arr they me blimin marvlus. An don'y f'get me 'anzums, look up Tinmuf.... Or righ' buy?

  • @banjcyco uhh no he is Canadian

  • I knew Lewis Roberts, he used to have a shop down in Bareneed.

  • Why do Americans think we Canadians all sound alike? I'm from Ontario and I definitely do not sound like this.

  • @sweiland75

No one is saying that all Canadians sound like this. Canada isn't even tagged in the description.

  • @warcraft125 I'm sure there are exceptions, but it seems to me that a lot of Americans believe that we all sound alike. I sound nothing like him, since I am from Ontario.

  • @sweiland75 Probably because you get your facts from the media and not a factual source.

  • @mzzzhedison so you're saying I can't trust American media. Thanks for the advice.

  • @sweiland75 Hahaha. Most Americans don't even trust the media; especially the ones that sit behind computers and spout off endless bullshit. And YW.

  • Here's a transcript for most of it:

"Oh, what a mouth! A big old mutt, dem teeth be alright... C'mon, show your teeth, look."

"So were these dogs here when Europeans got here?"

"Yeah. In Sleepy Hallow they came across with the (???) and someone said they was there...Those old teeth, those funny old teeth, little tongue... Show your old teeth. The dentist is gonna take out one of those and give them to me, y'know?"

    (Laughter)

  • @warcraft125

I think the ??? is Vikings.

  • I've lived in Newfoundland for seven years now. When I first moved here I couldn't even understand St. John's accents, now I can understand this one.

  • lovely accent!

  • Haha, I know Bubbles is from NS, but this guy with his love of dogs and his little "hehehe" at the end was funny!

  • Hahaha! I'm from Scotland. All I heard was something about a silly old dog and show your teeth??

  • This was great to watch this. Lewis reminds me of my Uncle in Bonavista when I'd come up for a visit. Always in a great mood. Same kind of accent as he was from Deer Island. It'd take a bit to get used to the accent again, but after that, it was back home again. Thanks for posting this vid.

  • Im from California, I could only understand a quarter of what he said.

  • i love that guy

  • (My Nova Scotia Accent) Tha' gai souns like he's frum newf'lan'. Akksense 'round her 'r' diff'rern' then up 'n newf'lan' in that yook'n tell iff ur frum Kay'p I'an' or Kay'p Bretun. I've nev'r seen 'nother place that' got tha' qwallity. (Normal Accent) That guy sounds like he's from Newfoundland. Accents around here are diffferent then up in Newfoundland, in that you can tell if you are from Cape Sable Island or Cape Breton. I have never seen another place that has that quality.

  • wtf is he saying

  • This is insanely awesome!

  • that almost sounds exactly the same as the strong Waterford, Ireland accent, where I am from.....It's uncanny!

  • @OranM2 It's weird eh, places like NFLD and Cape Breton have just traditionally been so isolated that it takes a long long time for things like accents to fade out. They'll change slightly, but because the mainland has less of an influence you can hear the old accents.

  • this isn't even a newfie accent he sounds like he's scottish or something. seriously

  • @shott3dg yeah your right im a newfie and my accent sounds nothing like that...just watch a video

  • lol I understood him just fine and I'm from a southern European family which lives in Ontario

  • That was... interesting. I could only get about half of it -_-

  • Not everyone in Newfoundland talks like this, js. -.-

  • I can understand him very well, Newfoundland and Labrador FTW!

  • what language is this? devil? o.o

  • i know every word he is saying

    i feel so proud :)

  • @TB722

    lol

i donate to the down syndrome foundation so I feel good that

I can help make you proud

  • @mattorrrr was that supposed to be funny? you ignorant jackass.

  • @TB722

:D, dude I'm Canadian and have every right to single out one of our minorities with liek a 21% unemployment rate, and you all come over here and work so I really dont like you.

  • @mattorrrr :) Actually is 13.8% and this is not the place to talk about our unemployment rate, it's a video of a guy talking about his dog. You don't like us? oh gosh how will we live on? I must go and tell everyone that we are not pleasing some asshole on youtube.

    my apologies.

  • @mattorrrr why exactly are you insulting other Canadians?

  • @TB722 - Please translate! I'm from Saskatchewan and when I worked for a call centre it was almost impossible for me to understand anything o.o

  • thats he me and mom talks. whe we are at the bank it takes her 40 minutes to talk to the teller cuz she keep on with " what". its funny stuff oh man.

  • He's like a wexford lad who watched one too many John Wayne movie.

  • @dazpatreg Or more accurately someone from the English Westcountry which is what essentially his accent is.You can't hear a trace of Irish in that accent it's totally westcountry which considering large parts of Newfoundland were settled by people from the Westcountry isn't too surprising.

  • @hoggspuddinman Fuckin hell its Russell Crowe!!! I dunno I always thought West Country and Wexford sound quite similar now that you mention it, considering there geographical proximity there's probably a relationship. There is no 'Irish' accent there's loads of different ones. I take your point though. There was also Gaelic language spoken in Newfoundland from what I've heard so I'd say that the accent is just a hodge podge of everything really.

  • LOL it's a funny accent, sounds like Australian accent lol

  • Not hard to understand, is he? I don't see it.

  • ROFL. Its too fast and pronounced differently to understand

  • yes by, only people ive herd it that thick were my pop and his brothers.

plus "DCXjuggernautXCD" im from newfoundland and im going to toronto the summer, my accent isnt thick though.

  • lmao i wonder how they communicate with non-newfies.. i from toronto btw. you should visit sometime. we speak pretty normal here ;)

  • omg no wonder canadians can go anywhere in the world and be loved

  • And you'd know about being loved internationally. hah.

  • the older you are, the stronger and less homogenised your accent is, im sure his father had a perfect irish accent

  • @akropiss

Im Irish but he sounds more northern english to me! Usually newfoundland sounds Irish tho!

  • @countsmyth

Ah its funny:) I reckon us Irish screwed up the accents that were spoken 200 years ago in places like Liverpool and Newfoundland. Fair play;)

  • @countsmyth I know, I have been watching loads of Newfounland vids and usually I can hear Irish or West Country, but he sounds Geordie to me!

  • oot d'ere a'de ruff a'de heh-oose.

  • @TlGBC this is how Germanic languages develop xD

  • i miss newfoundland

  • Sounds like Cape Sable Island accent.

  • Very West Country

  • sounds like home... <3

  • lol thats an amazingly strange accent and dialect but really cool all the same.

  • That is a cool dog
