  • It explodes like that because the reactor that explodes is in the bottom of the tower

  • it isn't a single prop, I'm a mapper and the citadel exploding is actually (pretty stupidly) multiple models.

  • it didnt really look all that big to me....until the pieces starting to fall all over the ground then i was like "holy shit thats fuckin awesome!!!!!!"

  • the explosion originates from the wrong place the reactor thingy that blew in HL2 was at the very top of the tower O_o, valve made a continuity error :P

  • It's a shame we never really got a good look at that sequence. It was so shrouded in effects that I just assumed it was vaporized until we saw the wreckage in Ep 2. It looks like it took a lot of time and effort to do that, too.

  • @pilot7893 this is more reallistic due to the citadel's dark matter reactor overloaded and the portal's collapsing magnetic force would literally rip the citadel appart because of the gravity and magnetic forces.

    for 1 citadel is the base of the town and if it was eating there will be all kind of combine(unseen) bildings. i can say that they are modfying the city like medival

    we can see that from like wall baracades of the city and big small gates. Wich are chekpoints

  • WRONG. The citadel's thumpers were replicating the effect of the thumpers used to scare antlions away. They send huge pulses deep through the ground the keep antlions out of the city. It's to protect the citizens. Alyx confirms this in episode 1 when she says "Antlions? In city 17? Huh... Makes sense since the citadel was a defence mechanism", or something to that effect.

  • Rendering something like that isn't that hard. All's that was, was a simple animation. It's the exact same thing EP2 does with all it's crazy physics.

  • No, the Citadel was a static prop at the end of EP1. Only a flash of light from the ground.

  • With most Source engine updates they try to make the special effects and graphics a little bit more better. But they leave the physics alone because they think it is good enough.

  • I've seen some massive things rendered without any problems in several engines. Unreal Engine, Cryengine2, and so on.

  • no, you've seen massive things rendered on those engines, but not without a problem, to run crysis on max practically needs a dual 280 rig. And Unreal uses the similar tricks to what valve uses to get their sizes up.

  • @xgcwardog Actually, Valve was very smart with effects like these in source. They use models with animation, instead of brushes to reduce lag. Therefore there will be no issues. Great Job Valve! ^^.

  • thats prerendered and would lag impossibly if physical. If you can affect someone, tell em to make prop pieces spawn where this animation hits ground

  • The individual models had to be reset for the animation sequence. You can press that button over and over every time it resets. Basically you just saw all the parts flying back to where they started so the animation could play again.

  • Sorry, didn't mean to remove your first comment, meant to hit reply. First of all, this was Garry's Mod 2007 Beta. That is the name in the steam folder, and in the game info text file, and in the GCFs, so no it's not Gmod 11 or whatever else you said.

  • I dunno where you get the from, never occurred to me that it would relate to Sept 11. That citadel is an animation of an empty building exploding, it happens every week or so with demo crews bringing down buildings to build something new.

  • I know, but I like how they have in Ep2, at that first vista overlooking City17. It seems much more dramatic to have the long pieces of the Citadel sticking out of the crater of the explosion. Much better looking than something that look like it was blown to bits.

  • Yeah, they should have made a shockwave that made a cool ripling effect instead of that white light. I couldnt see after that XD

  • theres 2 reasons I can think of why they didnt do a ripple

    1. To lazy to put it in

    2. Couldn't get a ripple in without overloading most peoples graphics cards
