Great to see that the 3 Friends of Ray Davies are defending their hero - all very sad as you will see when kinksboss1 (what a handle, says it all eh!), boulderandbun and jballer378 finally wake up and realise that virtually the whole catalogue is chronic bunk. You'll learn. . .
I learned a long time ago that the Kinks will always be my favorite, with the Boss, who I am seeing tomorrow for the world tour opener in San Jose, right behind. Bruce wasnt always perfect, especially in the 90's with 2 mediocre records Human Touch and Lucky Town, but the Kinks literally have hundreds of timeless gems, and the fact that music critics and musicians worship them and not the general public makes them even more special. Go listen to Arthur, Village Green and Lola albums to start
in the yrs 64-71, Ray and the K. had countless hits in europe and UK. Their string of 45s is legendary. we school boys then DUG them outtasight. (only B's and RS wete " better"). The K later albums differ, but generally contain MANY wonderful songs. I HAVE THEM ALL!! ON VINYL!! SAW RAY IN 2006, Utrecht NL. Eet meer haring.
As a #1 Kinks fan and #2 Bruce fan (hence my youtube name) I would like to apologize for BigRiverOne and his ignorance...you are embarrassing me son. The Kinks put out a treasure trove of music and Bruce is legendary for his live show...and vice versa. enough said, they are both head and shoulders above anyone else in my book (as long as Bruce is with the E Street Band of course)
"very few hits 4 Ray Davies" ....Great songwriting doesn't always equal "hit" . But, you should already know that River. Guess you haven't REALLY listened to or spent enough time with the Boss.
That's right, The Kinks have dozens of songs that I consider masterpieces, but weren't hits. Ray is one of the truly great, genius songwriters of all time.
big river one, im from america and i just want to say you are a complete fool for saying ray davies and the kinks are not good and only had a few hits. That is total bullshit but more importantly, anyone who knows anything about music knows that to really know any artist or band you need to listen to much more than just a greatest hits cd, so before you go critcizing ray and the kinks, check out all their stuff you god damn fool
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Absolutely chronic - very few hits 4 Ray Davies says it all. The Kinks had a run in the late 60s but a lack of real talent & ideas combined with the Davies brothers falling out guaranteed them to '3 hit wonders' - poor old Ray has had numerous ups & downs and the raincoat is hardly cool (or hot for that matter). No doubt a few Kinksters will lose some sleep on this commentary. Most of the comments agree with me - frankly I dont know why I have bothered to write - in the mean time visit The Boss
This song is beautiful. I just love the lyrics and the melody, especially the part about the fruit and veg man what a classic song. Only Ray Davies would release his first solo albums over thirty years after the Kinks prime and have it be this damn good.
None of his contemporaries outside of Bob Dylan have released any solo albums this strong in the last 10 years.
search youtube for "ray davies over my head" it is off Ray's 2006 solo album. The name escapes me right now, but I saw the Austin City Limits Davies performance of the songs off the 2006 album. Simple great!!!
Ray still is the greatest songwriter of all time and the KinKs stillthe greatest band. God save the KinKs forever. And for all we know they may still have a way to go. BUT until then catch Ray on his solo end of year 2008 tour in the US! - Frank Lima, The Montvale, New Jersey Hillbilly Boy aka Dan the Fan
celt 68...not much chance of ramondo coming back to Ireland too soon, I'm afraid...not even the UK...since he moved to New Orleans and took out US citienship he plays regularly only in North America now...hates the UK, I believe...in fact, he's headlining a gig here in Winnipeg, Canada in two weeks where they'll be about 100,000 crowd...so lots of dosh...that's all this guy has ever cared about...ask those who know him. Great tunes, though, innit????
great tunes, definitely, but I can't agree that all Ray's ever cared about is the money. He's always rejected commercial trends in favour of persuing his own artistic ideas. Also, he's been playing in the UK, I saw him a couple of weeks ago! did not get the impression he hates it here at all
Where abouts did you see him? i saw him at Hampton Court Palace, and i agree, he seemed very happy to be back in England. I also didn't get the impression he only cares about the money, you can tell he is still very passionate about his music...
I was at Hampton Court too, amazing performance! Great to see him still trying out new ideas and writing new material, not just resting on his back catelogue
Ray actually lives in London now, north London, right round where he grew up. So you are way off the mark there. And I think it's save to say that he doesn't hate the UK, he's probably one of its greatest champions. And this particular song is great evidence of that, that's what it is about.
Does e?? U sure? Read article where he was interviewed saying he now lived in New Orleans and it was the only place he had ever felt really a home and that he had wished he had moved there years ago...I lived in North Londona t time of Ray and the Kinks and the Muswwll Hillbilly thing so was VERY surprised to read this interview,,,said his new band was based out of there and all that...
Ray Davies'music speaks to the common man, and often refers to memories that shape his yearning for a simpler, purer time. He writes of anxieties, disillusionment and failed relationships but always finds hope for the future. His views are witty, sentimental, critical and hopeful all at the same time. "Gotta stand and face it, life is so complicated."
His quirky songs and wry observations are cleverly wrapped up in some of the most melodic tunes you'll ever hear from a rock artist.
I just saw this song live at the Tower in Philly. It has to be my favorite song from his new stuff. I had only listened to it one time before the show. But at the show i felt like i knew every word.
I was there too at the Tower. He's one hell of an artist. There's not many of the originals that still can sing their original songs in the original keys. I was wowed watching him sing "Tired of Waiting" I thought, geez he's 63 and still going strong. He IS the storyteller. Thanks Ray!! Love ya to death!
Hey, Ray-Don't be such a stranger to the music scene next time. Look what happens to rock when you disappear for so long. All the shit groups take over. Let's have a KinKs reunion before it's too late.
God, we wish! But I really don't think he sounds up for it. Partly because he's still recovering - but mainly, I think, because he doesn't want to be steamrollered by Ray. Shame though.

It's a return to form indeed. Phobia, Uk Jive and Think Visual were pieces of shit. Oh and before you say anything The Kinks are my favourite band and Ray Davies my favourite musician/artist/songwriter ever.

TheInnerLight 4 years ago
You need to have your head examined!
How can you claim the Kinks are your favorite band and Ray is your favorite songwriter ever and call those three albums pieces of shit?!
Are you really 20 years old as your profile states?
Usually it's the old farts and their "Village Green" mentality who would take that stance on later day Kinks material.
I do agree with you that Ray is the greatest singwriter ever, no one can touch him...now, then or ever.
JohnnySeven 4 years ago
Those three albums are terrible, each has two amazing songs, but still the result is pretty bad. I feel Preservation and Word of Mouth are the two album that I can say only have a few killer songs on them.
Put it this way..a so-called decline in the quality of Kinks material would still land them in the excellent catagory.
Few if any can claim that.
