@SidStyles If you can't see my bike, then you must spend a lot of time crashing into other cars, badly enough that you probably shouldn't have a licence. Quite a few sports cars are lower than me, and my lights are at a similar height to that of many sedans. I take it you can't see those either. You must also be unable to stay in your own lane, since you can't see paint on the road.
The reality is that my bike is more visible than normal upright bikes, and is considerably safer.
@CyclingMikey depends what speed you are moving at, in my 8 ton taut you cant see anything smaller than a car in the mirrors at any speed over 40 km/h due to the vibration of the mirrors...
@Devourer221 You won't be missing my front light - it's more intense and brighter than car headlights. Besides which, I'm unlikely to be overtaking you if you're doing 40km/hour, I'd be quite happy and safely sitting behind you.
Since filtering is slightly more risky I'll usually only filter stationary traffic. When filtering stationary traffic I notice far more people kindly pulling out of the way to let me past when I'm on this bike than when I'm on my upright.
@CyclingMikey you honestly think that bike safer then a normal dont you? I would have to say neither is safe to out there riding in the middle of the road! sure mount a head light. Mount one on a mountain bike the fact of the matter is your still no wider then the other and being so low how you assume someone can see you better in there rear view mirror below there trunk line?
@tyle6 Well, it's much safer to be in the middle of the road than at the side. This from vehicular cycling principles.
Yes, the bicycle is super visible to people in their mirrors - do you think people pull out of the way of an invisible cyclist? LOL! Besides, I'm not that low - many sports cars are lower than me. I take it you've crashed into a few Ferraris and Lambos in your time? I take it you also missed the flashing from my headlight in the video.
If not, I imagine you don't know then that most cyclists already own cars, and often very nice ones too. I'm just not stupid enough to want to drive my car in Central London. It's much faster and better by bike.
@tucnasam I guess because there are lots of IT literate and motivated cyclists, cycling has risen fast, and driver attitude hasn't quite kept up with that improvement. I imagine the cameras will help drivers to change their ways fairly quickly. :) I do see quite a lot of cycle camera users in other countries on YouTube though, the majority seem to be here.
@tucnasam The helmet cam is because people seem to want to kill cyclists! Bike riding seems faster. I don't ride one but see how fast they get through standing traffic, even at 15MPH when I am on the way to and from work. I like to leave at least 6ft when overtaking in case they hit a pothole and fall off for example, or need to avoid something. The only thing that concerns me is if I indicate left and a cyclist undertakes me on a corner, that's happened twice - but I use my mirrors!
@tucnasam Because everyone thinks its funny to post videos on youtube and facebook about how they just hit a cyclist off their bike, this is pay back!!
You ever woke up from being in a coma from being thrown off your cycle by a lorry driver,
ahh i knew you were south african! im not but my girlfiend is so im trying to learn afrikaans from her parents :P also a great video as always! keep it up!
@kd84afc I don't know, but I'd certainly have stopped and offered my services as a witness. Besides, I'm sure I'd want some counselling having seen the results come out of the wheels just meters in front of me. In this particular instance one would hope that the video would also make things a little bit easier to deal with for the lorry driver.
Cycling down the inside of the lorry was stupid and against the law and is a sure way for a cyclist to die.
I believe the police call it undertaking any motorist would face prosecution and I'm sure if the police had seen you do that you would have been given some stern advice.
I am retired from the emergency ambulance service and saw the remains of a school boy who did what you did the lorry had run over is head and believe me it was not pretty sight.
Filtering is fine, but the "filter at all costs" mentality which some cyclists have (the mentality that pushes them to "filter" through red lights, the wrong way up a one-way street, or the wrong side of a lorry) is just ridiculously dangerous.
I wasn't aware there was fucking war going on between people who use bicycles and people who use cars. Thank god I live in a country where both are used by nearly everyone. We don't have much car puritists where I come from.
@taistelutomaatti LOL, yeah, the car drivers are confused - they don't understand that cyclists don't want them to drive like c@nts and risk our lives, and they don't realise that most cyclists are also drivers. What's more, a minority of drivers don't know how to behave around cyclists. We're changing that, though, cameras are a good way to provide driver education.
And in reply to your comment to TR5T the highway code says when passing a vehicle ensure you give plenty of room incase someone opens a door. Try taking your driving test and get to close, see if you pass. Its now obvious your just here to defend you 2 wheeled friends. And before you hold this post off the wall till you think of a good defence, dont bother. Im not that intrested in one way views. I instruct on safe driving and see you have no idea about it.
@Kingkamsin Calm down old chap, there's really no need to overreact like that.
Sure, you're right that the highway code says to give parked cars plenty of room. How much cycling have you done though? How often have you seen less experienced cyclists bullied into the door zone by impatient drivers? For that matter, so many cyclists don't dare to ride out of the door zone because impatient drivers have given them the perception that they should never hold up traffic.
@Kingkamsin The point remains, though, that even if someone is in the door zone, the driver who doors them will be held liable both criminally and civilly. You can see the difference between the two pieces of highway code advice. Which one is MUST NOT?
Oh im sorry, i thought you posted this to show stupidity, but really just wanted to jump to the defence of people on bikes. You show us what people on bikes do then defend their actions. I never said they kill anyone, i said they cause accidents. And your foolish comment about cost of insurance is at best ignorance. A sports car does less damage than a 44 ton truck, but cost far more to insure. A pedestrian can cause an accident and requires no insurance just the same as a horse and cart.
@Kingkamsin Cyclists very rarely cause accidents, I'm afraid. As for sports car insurance being high, that's obvious: people tend to drive badly in them and crash much more often than in a more sedate and "boring" vehicle.
I'm not jumping to anyone's defence - a tosser will be a tosser regardless of whether he/she is on a bike, in a car, or driving a lorry. The difference is that a tosser in a car or a lorry is a huge risk to other people, whilst the cyclist is only a risk to themselves.
@CyclingMikey I've almost hit 3 cyclist while driving in the city. Not hit a motor bike though.... Wonder why? Not saying it's the cyclists fault entirely here. Cycle lanes are poorly thought out at best. But I have seen a lot of impatient and rude behaviour from cyclists. I do like cycling myself, I just wish you had to do a test to ride a cycle on the road. This guy in your video would not of passed.
@stephenTcartwright TRL549 - drivers perceive cyclists as an out-tribe, quick to blame them immediately without understanding why they might behave as they do. At the same time they tend to excuse other drivers' errors.
I'm not excusing this cyclist at all - you'll have seen the Silly Cyclist series on YouTube which we all contribute to, but the most consistently dangerous and lethal behaviour on the roads comes from a minority of drivers. They are why thousands of us carry cameras.
I once saw a bicycle fly into the air at Shepherds Bush round about. I also tried to get out of my car on Goodge St. and a speeding cyclist almost took off my door,It's dangerous out there.
@TR5T You realise that opening your door and not checking it's safe to do that is highly dangerous, and illegal? Many drivers aren't aware that their actions with doors are responsible for one of the big causes of killed and seriously injured cyclists. I'm assuming a little here, I wasn't there and don't know what actually happened.
Rule 239: you MUST ensure you do not hit anyone when you open your door – check for cyclists or other traffic.
@CyclingMikey No I checked! It was right at the corner and he was absolutely flying. From the time I looked in the mirror to pulling the door handle he was there.
On a small roadway like Goodge St. it is unsafe to do those types of speeds anyway.
In this case you are correct, however i ment in genral. If he had cause an accident by his acctions by the lorry seeing him and pulling out to avoid him, he could of hit another car. I drove HGV for 20 years and have seen this all to oftern in cities. They do cause accidents.
@Kingkamsin It's vanishingly rare, so rare that you can ignore the likelyhood of cyclists killing, causing serious injury, or property damage. That's quite unlike motorists, who do kill and injure hundreds of thousands of people per year, and it's also why motorists are required to have the full gamut of licence, insurance, MOT, VED, etc, whilst cyclists are required to have none of that. Same reason 3rd party cyclist insurance is so cheap as to be negligible, unlike 3rd party motor insurance.
@Kingkamsin Fool he was indeed, but I doubt if he killed himself if that would cost anyone's insurance. There's no blame on anyone else, so no claim either.
@riddlydiddly1 Ah, I see you're another overt homophobe, but just haven't come out yourself.
When you're tough enough to ride a 45 mile round trip commute, and do a physical job, then you can come back and talk yourself up. Until then, goodbye.
@ninjawasp106 There's no electric assist on my bicycle, mate, although sometimes I wish I did have climbing back up the North Downs after a hard day's work. (There's around 530m of ascending on my commute).
@TheLulisBlue If you knew that cycle path, you wouldn't use it either. Just sitting behind the lorry is fine. Vehicular cycling is the best way to make it through this junction.
@CyclingMikey wow, I am cyclist and coach driver, so I have to deal daily with both, other cyclists and car drivers, but more important I am always equally road user, I had to check what means "Vehicular cycling" and cant more agree with you right not, I am going to print brochures with those five principals of John Forester and pass to drivers and cyclist
@kona6495 I wish I deserved that status. The reality is that it's more comfortable, faster, less effort, safer, and more visible. I tend not to use my uprights as much any more because of that.
@CyclingMikey i think the visibility issue might be a bit more complex. although the rider's head is high enough i noticed that i notice recumbents later than a "classic" bike if there is heave traffic. it might be just that here, in australia they are rare and my brain hasn't learned to deal with them as well as with the usual type. it wouldn't be a problem if all drivers did the right thing (indicate, move over and pass at safe distance),
I would of had no sympathy for him. What a twat. Some people think they're superman when theye had a drink this dick thinks he is superman ecause he has his helmet on.
If you ask me the cyclist on that stupid lying down bike is asking to die. How you gonna get out of trouble if you get side swiped by a car. your toast. Atleast the cyclist on the mountain bike can easily escape from a situation.
@predator45655 See the other comments - not only is it easily ten times more visible than a normal bike, but it's safer, faster, and more comfortable too.
@CyclingMikey I must admit, I've never tried... and would love to give it a chance.
But here in Montreal, where I ride all four seasons, and in deep snow or just chunks of ice, I need not only the power of my legs to keep the pace, but also the weight of my body to give me some momentum.
But I'm also traveling on my bike and last year, in my two months long travel, I met many cyclists riding a recumbent, and they were all saying it was really comfortable...
@fl260 I think if I had to ride much snow/ice, I'd either use a MTB or a recumbent trike. They are apparently incredible fun because they have such stability, and you can ride and corner like a loon even in the iciest of conditions. Do you ride with studded tyres?
I tend to commute on main roads, so don't encounter much ice at all as they're all well gritted.
mate that guy is a grade one cock you did right to shout at him it people like him that give us lorry drivers a bad name cos from the cab we cant see that wheel too well its a bif blind spot for us - at least you had sense & held back
I am unfamiliar with the road but @ 0.11 is there not a cyclist filter lane to the left leading under the bridge designed to avoid this hazrard at the bottleneck?
You can see another cyclist take it @0.15 and signs clearly marked.
@casusbelli15 It's a waste of space, that cycle lane. It's probably more dangerous, as well as considerably slower than just taking the lane as I do every commute.
You're asking for trouble cycling one of those things around London. Cycling a road bike as myself is one thing in London, but cycling that thing... no no.
@TheRealEmskiHelp Sometimes people tell me that, but it's never anyone who has actual experience on a recumbent. The reality is that they are far more visible than your road bike, and car drivers take more care and give me more space. Riding my road bike, by comparison, it feels like I've put on Harry Potter's cloak of invisibility. Scary!
@TheRealEmskiHelp Oh, I'm not a particularly strong rider by any means, but it's probably a couple km/hour faster than my road bike in average speed over my 45 mile commute.
You could look at "A pointless overtake" (search on youtube) and see me sprint off and overtake a car on the flat. 58km/hr if I recall. I'm certainly no fast rider, LOL!
@CyclingMikey Under UK Road Vehicle Lighting Regulations the rear light must capable of emitting a steady light and conform to BS3648 or BS6102/3, fitted either centrally or to the off side at a height of between 35cm and 150cm from the ground.
Flashing lights are permitted to be worn by pedestrians on foot.
@CyclingMikey I would have to admit to using flashing lights on my bicycle although only in conjunction with lights with a fixed output. I believe using flashing lights by them selves on a bicycle can be more of a hazard because of the speed and amount the position can change of a cyclist between flashes. This can make it hard for approaching traffic to judge distance or perceive a change in direction of the cyclist.
@Broadcast1Channel Yeah, my lights are both on and flashing in the same light. Search "Exposure MaXx-D cyclingmikey" and "dinotte jonnygeez" for two videos showing my main lights.
Nice recumbent... what model is it? I built my own... 26" rear, 20" front, discs both ends, and a nice composite seat from a Polish chap in Cornwall. Cheers from Australia!
Has it ever crossed your mind that car drivers feel the same way about cyclists on the public roadways as you do about the pedestrians on the cycle lanes in this example, for the same reasons of safety? How do you justify this double standard?
@cube252002 *Confused*. There's no double standard - I don't mind the pedestrians there at all. I just stick to the roads as they are faster and safer for me - and I'm faster than the cars.
What's the point of cycling out of my way to use the cycle lane, having to go through multiple give ways and tight corners, and being careful around pedestrians when I can just easily pass on the road with no trouble at all in about 1/4 of the time it'd take to use the cycle lane?
@CyclingMikey a bike with a recliner. how long do you ride on that bike, i mean, how many kms? and when u stop how come its still standing without you putting a foot on the ground. 2 rear wheels? maybe not? coz it would be a tricycle! haha
@shudahknive My commute is a 70km round trip, which I do usually 3.5 times a week on average. I usually put a hand down instead of my foot, again because it's easier. That means I can get going really quickly when the lights change.
I just door-checked some dumbass cyclist the other day. He tried to get pissed at me, then I flashed him a glimpse of my Glock. Pussy never pedaled so hard. Funny shit.
@GroovinFunk I'm not sure you're doing a very good job of compensating for your small willy. If you'd really done any of that on camera, you'd be facing jail time here in the UK.
@Salsuscanis It's safer for cyclists if drivers look where the fuck they're going. And if the likes of you stay off the road altogether, as you're too stupid to figure out the concept of sharing
lol who caressssss, bikes are awesome, cars are awesome. i love driving and i bike on the same roads. why does it matter what a rider does, ive flown into many trees in my life lol. in the end im still around
@CO0LTUBE Yes, I love fast cars too. :D Unfortunately not many people come back from flying under the wheels of an HGV like this one. My shouting was half in concern for him, and half selfishly wanting to avoid seeing badly shredded meat chunks coming out of the rear wheels. I can do without the nightmares and putting *bad sh1t* in a mental box.
Someone explain to me what Bike riders think they have the right to pedal their asses down a fucking street? Why is it the guy at 15 seconds in took the correct route and rode down the sidewalk under the bridge. I can only wish you fuckers get smeared on the road side. The road is for cars and trucks not you
@Salsuscanis I'm afraid you must be confused. This is the public highway which by law is for all to use, and bicycles were here first, long before cars. It's illegal to cycle on the pavement (sidewalk to you), and rightly so. Bicycles belong on the roads.
You must be scum of the earth to wish people dead and smeared on the side of the road. Best be very careful with your politeness and manners on any future comments, else you'll get banned.
@CyclingMikey No see this is where you are wrong. You cant just go and quote we were here first bullshit. Matter a fact the bycicle which "was here first" wasnt truly revamped to use as a traveling tool until about the same period as cars. Even if its illgal its still safer for the drivers to have you up on the sidewalk
@Salsuscanis It's not safer to ride on the pavement - it's both slower and more dangerous for the cyclists, and for pedestrians too, which is why it's illegal. Be honest, the only reason drivers like you want cyclists on the pavement is because you're too selfish to share the road.
Remember, this is the UK, where huge numbers of people walk places. It's not a place where blobs of jello drive themselves everywhere and you're a weirdo for wanting to walk or cycle anywhere.
@Salsuscanis Your life in the metal cage of a car is put at risk by cyclists? I think that's called being caught walking around with your stupidity hanging out in public.
It's not cyclists that kill and injure hundreds of thousands of people per year in the UK. Assuming you're in the US, it's considerably more dangerous there if I'm not mistaken.
@Salsuscanis Wrong. Bicycles were in common use around a half century before the same for cars, and cyclists were responsible for the start of the system of metalled roads. There are around twice the number of bicycles than cars, and cyclists in the UK have more right to be on the road than drivers who are only there as a privilege.
I can much more easily lose my privilege to drive in a variety of ways than I can lose my right to cycle. I think you've rather been pwned.
@CyclingMikey Wrong bicycles were only used as a mean of transportation in inner cities where horse was less useful. Even then they were not used as much as you think in the terms your stating. However your direct qutoing of Wikipedia is quite impressive
@Salsuscanis Wrong again. They were a major factor in improving pay conditions for farm labourers, who could now move farms over a much greater area to seek better conditions.
the chap on bike was surely foolish - and possibly illegal - to venture up the left side of the lorry. If he had been injured then in my opinion it would have been almost totally his own fault.
And, as others have said - why not use the cycle lane.
Maybe one day you idiots will stay out of the street with your bikes. but intil then your going to keep getting your butts ran over.. good luck with that.
@izip2 Bicycles are supposed to use the road - it's called the public highway for a reason. Learn to share it, and don't drive (or ride) like a James Blunt.
@CyclingMikey ok so i suppose we should start walking up and down the highway then since its a public highway. Screw side walks, I'm going to start jogging down the middle of the road.
@ChicanoX3Irish Yup, there are no jaywalking laws here. I was amazed, and when I first got to the UK I thought it was very wrong, but now I realise it's the much more enlightened approach.
Pedestrians are allowed to cross anywhere, and often use the road, particularly when the pavement (sidewalk to you) is blocked.
@azmanntoz LOL! OTOH oldNavy has a point, but only where it comes to fast motorway style roads. I don't see any problem mixing motor vehicles and bicycles in 30mph city roads.
@TheSimple46 Time to sweat your head over slightly more difficult and real problems then. ;) Recumbents are safer than normal bikes, and much more visible too.
@CyclingMikey I agree with you, but it also has a lot to do with how a bike is ridden rather than what kind of bike it is. You're riding your bike like someone would drive a car - proper lane positioning etc. It's when cyclists try to cut through gaps and down the side of trucks like this that it gets dangerous. I'd much rather share the road with you than that guy!
@gdr55nuk Thanks - yes, I suspect how you ride is several thousand times more important to your safety than what type of bike you ride. Still, I'd *much* rather fall off a lowracer like mine than off an upright bike after having done both.
@Augster1988 No, that's only your opinion, and it's mistaken. Experience riding one would tell you otherwise. There is no doubt at all how much more visible a recumbent is, even if you only go by the tiny number of SMIDSYs I get. That's totally different than when riding my upright bicycle.
I could never understand why anybody would risk their lives by going up the inside of a truck. The chances are that the driver sees you but why gamble? If he doesn't see you you can bet he won't feel it when the truck squashes you. Cyclists/pedestrians please stay clear of trucks, nobody enjoys the job of cleaning up afterwards.
cyclist do this all the time, Undertake cars and lorrys, I had it done to me the other week, I was turning left into a side street of a main road, I had to stop for a 3 -4 secs while a car parked, I was signalling left the entire time, And as I moved off a cyclist undertook me, I never braked so hard in my life, how close he become to being knocked of because he was to lazy to overtake me instead...
I ride on the pavement all the time, simply because of the amount of idiots that I meet on the road. I'd prefer to get fined then risk it out on London roads.
@swat006007 At the speeds I ride at, and a 43 mile round trip commute, that wouldn't be a very practical solution for me, and I'm far from the fastest of cyclists.
Good concern mate...

And before you hold this post off the wall till you think of a good defence, dont bother. Im not that intrested in one way views. I instruct on safe driving and see you have no idea about it.
Kingkamsin 1 week ago
@Kingkamsin Calm down old chap, there's really no need to overreact like that.
Sure, you're right that the highway code says to give parked cars plenty of room. How much cycling have you done though? How often have you seen less experienced cyclists bullied into the door zone by impatient drivers? For that matter, so many cyclists don't dare to ride out of the door zone because impatient drivers have given them the perception that they should never hold up traffic.
CyclingMikey 1 week ago
@Kingkamsin The point remains, though, that even if someone is in the door zone, the driver who doors them will be held liable both criminally and civilly. You can see the difference between the two pieces of highway code advice. Which one is MUST NOT?
CyclingMikey 1 week ago
Oh im sorry, i thought you posted this to show stupidity, but really just wanted to jump to the defence of people on bikes. You show us what people on bikes do then defend their actions. I never said they kill anyone, i said they cause accidents. And your foolish comment about cost of insurance is at best ignorance. A sports car does less damage than a 44 ton truck, but cost far more to insure. A pedestrian can cause an accident and requires no insurance just the same as a horse and cart.
Kingkamsin 1 week ago
@Kingkamsin Cyclists very rarely cause accidents, I'm afraid. As for sports car insurance being high, that's obvious: people tend to drive badly in them and crash much more often than in a more sedate and "boring" vehicle.
I'm not jumping to anyone's defence - a tosser will be a tosser regardless of whether he/she is on a bike, in a car, or driving a lorry. The difference is that a tosser in a car or a lorry is a huge risk to other people, whilst the cyclist is only a risk to themselves.
CyclingMikey 1 week ago
@CyclingMikey I've almost hit 3 cyclist while driving in the city. Not hit a motor bike though.... Wonder why? Not saying it's the cyclists fault entirely here. Cycle lanes are poorly thought out at best. But I have seen a lot of impatient and rude behaviour from cyclists. I do like cycling myself, I just wish you had to do a test to ride a cycle on the road. This guy in your video would not of passed.
stephenTcartwright 1 week ago
@stephenTcartwright TRL549 - drivers perceive cyclists as an out-tribe, quick to blame them immediately without understanding why they might behave as they do. At the same time they tend to excuse other drivers' errors.
I'm not excusing this cyclist at all - you'll have seen the Silly Cyclist series on YouTube which we all contribute to, but the most consistently dangerous and lethal behaviour on the roads comes from a minority of drivers. They are why thousands of us carry cameras.
CyclingMikey 1 week ago
I once saw a bicycle fly into the air at Shepherds Bush round about. I also tried to get out of my car on Goodge St. and a speeding cyclist almost took off my door,It's dangerous out there.
TR5T 1 week ago

TR5T 1 week ago
@TR5T Ah, fair enough mate. Sorry for my earlier scepticism, I just see so many people throwing doors open that I'm immediately distrustful.
CyclingMikey 1 week ago
In this case you are correct, however i ment in genral. If he had cause an accident by his acctions by the lorry seeing him and pulling out to avoid him, he could of hit another car. I drove HGV for 20 years and have seen this all to oftern in cities. They do cause accidents.
Kingkamsin 1 week ago
@Kingkamsin It's vanishingly rare, so rare that you can ignore the likelyhood of cyclists killing, causing serious injury, or property damage. That's quite unlike motorists, who do kill and injure hundreds of thousands of people per year, and it's also why motorists are required to have the full gamut of licence, insurance, MOT, VED, etc, whilst cyclists are required to have none of that. Same reason 3rd party cyclist insurance is so cheap as to be negligible, unlike 3rd party motor insurance.
CyclingMikey 1 week ago
What an idiot, he was lucky the truck did not kill him. But fools like him cost us all on our insurance.

@kona6495 I wish I deserved that status. The reality is that it's more comfortable, faster, less effort, safer, and more visible. I tend not to use my uprights as much any more because of that.
CyclingMikey 2 weeks ago
@CyclingMikey I would agree 100%, ive seen the physics behind how the machines work, and it looks great!
I'd have one myself but im a road racer and a commuter, so its a normal race bike for me all the way.
Id love to try one though!
kona6495 2 weeks ago
@CyclingMikey i think the visibility issue might be a bit more complex. although the rider's head is high enough i noticed that i notice recumbents later than a "classic" bike if there is heave traffic. it might be just that here, in australia they are rare and my brain hasn't learned to deal with them as well as with the usual type. it wouldn't be a problem if all drivers did the right thing (indicate, move over and pass at safe distance),
best of luck on the road.

fl260 2 weeks ago
@fl260 Do you mean you've also never ridden a recumbent? ;)
CyclingMikey 2 weeks ago
@CyclingMikey I must admit, I've never tried... and would love to give it a chance.
But here in Montreal, where I ride all four seasons, and in deep snow or just chunks of ice, I need not only the power of my legs to keep the pace, but also the weight of my body to give me some momentum.
But I'm also traveling on my bike and last year, in my two months long travel, I met many cyclists riding a recumbent, and they were all saying it was really comfortable...
But for now, I love my mountain!
fl260 2 weeks ago
@fl260 I think if I had to ride much snow/ice, I'd either use a MTB or a recumbent trike. They are apparently incredible fun because they have such stability, and you can ride and corner like a loon even in the iciest of conditions. Do you ride with studded tyres?
I tend to commute on main roads, so don't encounter much ice at all as they're all well gritted.

casusbelli15 2 weeks ago
@casusbelli15 It's a waste of space, that cycle lane. It's probably more dangerous, as well as considerably slower than just taking the lane as I do every commute.
CyclingMikey 2 weeks ago
You're asking for trouble cycling one of those things around London. Cycling a road bike as myself is one thing in London, but cycling that thing... no no.
TheRealEmskiHelp 2 weeks ago
@TheRealEmskiHelp Sometimes people tell me that, but it's never anyone who has actual experience on a recumbent. The reality is that they are far more visible than your road bike, and car drivers take more care and give me more space. Riding my road bike, by comparison, it feels like I've put on Harry Potter's cloak of invisibility. Scary!
CyclingMikey 2 weeks ago
@CyclingMikey What would you say is your average and top speed on that thing?
TheRealEmskiHelp 2 weeks ago
@TheRealEmskiHelp Oh, I'm not a particularly strong rider by any means, but it's probably a couple km/hour faster than my road bike in average speed over my 45 mile commute.
You could look at "A pointless overtake" (search on youtube) and see me sprint off and overtake a car on the flat. 58km/hr if I recall. I'm certainly no fast rider, LOL!

Is it true that having a light flashing on a bicycle is illegal?
AidenJSS 3 weeks ago
@AidenJSS Not in the UK, flashing lights are quite legal. The actual lighting regs are a bit of a shambles though.
CyclingMikey 3 weeks ago
@CyclingMikey Under UK Road Vehicle Lighting Regulations the rear light must capable of emitting a steady light and conform to BS3648 or BS6102/3, fitted either centrally or to the off side at a height of between 35cm and 150cm from the ground.
Flashing lights are permitted to be worn by pedestrians on foot.
Broadcast1Channel 2 weeks ago
@Broadcast1Channel I think that's no longer the case, and flashing lights are now permitted front and rear.
CyclingMikey 2 weeks ago
@CyclingMikey I would have to admit to using flashing lights on my bicycle although only in conjunction with lights with a fixed output. I believe using flashing lights by them selves on a bicycle can be more of a hazard because of the speed and amount the position can change of a cyclist between flashes. This can make it hard for approaching traffic to judge distance or perceive a change in direction of the cyclist.
Broadcast1Channel 2 weeks ago
@Broadcast1Channel Yeah, my lights are both on and flashing in the same light. Search "Exposure MaXx-D cyclingmikey" and "dinotte jonnygeez" for two videos showing my main lights.

Has it ever crossed your mind that car drivers feel the same way about cyclists on the public roadways as you do about the pedestrians on the cycle lanes in this example, for the same reasons of safety? How do you justify this double standard?
cube252002 3 weeks ago
@cube252002 *Confused*. There's no double standard - I don't mind the pedestrians there at all. I just stick to the roads as they are faster and safer for me - and I'm faster than the cars.
What's the point of cycling out of my way to use the cycle lane, having to go through multiple give ways and tight corners, and being careful around pedestrians when I can just easily pass on the road with no trouble at all in about 1/4 of the time it'd take to use the cycle lane?

The road is for cars and trucks not you
Salsuscanis 1 month ago
@Salsuscanis I'm afraid you must be confused. This is the public highway which by law is for all to use, and bicycles were here first, long before cars. It's illegal to cycle on the pavement (sidewalk to you), and rightly so. Bicycles belong on the roads.
You must be scum of the earth to wish people dead and smeared on the side of the road. Best be very careful with your politeness and manners on any future comments, else you'll get banned.
CyclingMikey 4 weeks ago
@CyclingMikey No see this is where you are wrong. You cant just go and quote we were here first bullshit. Matter a fact the bycicle which "was here first" wasnt truly revamped to use as a traveling tool until about the same period as cars. Even if its illgal its still safer for the drivers to have you up on the sidewalk
Salsuscanis 4 weeks ago
@Salsuscanis It's not safer to ride on the pavement - it's both slower and more dangerous for the cyclists, and for pedestrians too, which is why it's illegal. Be honest, the only reason drivers like you want cyclists on the pavement is because you're too selfish to share the road.
Remember, this is the UK, where huge numbers of people walk places. It's not a place where blobs of jello drive themselves everywhere and you're a weirdo for wanting to walk or cycle anywhere.
CyclingMikey 4 weeks ago

Salsuscanis 4 weeks ago
@Salsuscanis Your life in the metal cage of a car is put at risk by cyclists? I think that's called being caught walking around with your stupidity hanging out in public.
It's not cyclists that kill and injure hundreds of thousands of people per year in the UK. Assuming you're in the US, it's considerably more dangerous there if I'm not mistaken.

@xIUBUNTUIx LOL, alright sorry, that was unfair and unkind. I drive a car too, but I get overweight in the autumn through eating too much. :)
CyclingMikey 4 weeks ago
@Salsuscanis Wrong. Bicycles were in common use around a half century before the same for cars, and cyclists were responsible for the start of the system of metalled roads. There are around twice the number of bicycles than cars, and cyclists in the UK have more right to be on the road than drivers who are only there as a privilege.
I can much more easily lose my privilege to drive in a variety of ways than I can lose my right to cycle. I think you've rather been pwned.
CyclingMikey 4 weeks ago
@CyclingMikey Wrong bicycles were only used as a mean of transportation in inner cities where horse was less useful. Even then they were not used as much as you think in the terms your stating. However your direct qutoing of Wikipedia is quite impressive
Salsuscanis 4 weeks ago
@Salsuscanis Wrong again. They were a major factor in improving pay conditions for farm labourers, who could now move farms over a much greater area to seek better conditions.
CyclingMikey 4 weeks ago
the chap on bike was surely foolish - and possibly illegal - to venture up the left side of the lorry. If he had been injured then in my opinion it would have been almost totally his own fault.

@TheSimple46 Time to sweat your head over slightly more difficult and real problems then. ;) Recumbents are safer than normal bikes, and much more visible too.
CyclingMikey 1 month ago 2
@CyclingMikey I agree with you, but it also has a lot to do with how a bike is ridden rather than what kind of bike it is. You're riding your bike like someone would drive a car - proper lane positioning etc. It's when cyclists try to cut through gaps and down the side of trucks like this that it gets dangerous. I'd much rather share the road with you than that guy!
gdr55nuk 1 month ago
@gdr55nuk Thanks - yes, I suspect how you ride is several thousand times more important to your safety than what type of bike you ride. Still, I'd *much* rather fall off a lowracer like mine than off an upright bike after having done both.
CyclingMikey 1 month ago
@CyclingMikey That's also a good point, not as far to fall....
gdr55nuk 1 month ago
@CyclingMikey Recumbents being safer is arguable in some cases, and a recumbent being more visible is false.
Augster1988 1 month ago
@Augster1988 No, that's only your opinion, and it's mistaken. Experience riding one would tell you otherwise. There is no doubt at all how much more visible a recumbent is, even if you only go by the tiny number of SMIDSYs I get. That's totally different than when riding my upright bicycle.

I could never understand why anybody would risk their lives by going up the inside of a truck. The chances are that the driver sees you but why gamble?
