That is such a touching& tender song & since the audience had been so "blah", MB was so genuinely surprised that they showed ANYTHING of a positive response to his performance that he was thrilled & that's why he thanked them and was so (Michael is always himself, onstage or off & can't ever hide his feelings..) happy and had such a big smile on his face when the song was over.

All of us felt a sense of "whew", too. They were a tough crowd! Sue Ellen

Michael had a tough time with this audience and he really meant it when he thanked them at the end of this song he performed so beautifully.
