So both spelled and spelt (both being commonly used) are accepted forms of the past and past participle tenses of spell. If you want to be pedantic I would guess spelt derives from spelled as the ending -ed is added to the majority of past tense verbs, and phonetically spelled could have been shortened to spelt.
