@mousehound35 : It's mostly the shapes. In some fonts, all the lines are the same thickness, but the letters would definitely look odd if the verticals were thick and the horizontals narrow! The font I used in the middle and along the top is similar to what you will see in most siddurs (prayer books) and Bibles, but I circled each letter in a variety of fonts so you can see the range of acceptable variations and get a feel for what makes an Alef an Alef.
