lol, I noticed that too. the only difference is sopranos go up at the end (and sometimes the second to last note) and mezzo/contraltos and baritones go down.
This woman opens her mouth and roars like a lion...I guess that's what kind of sound the Vennard ideals turn out...take the back of your tongue and push your larynx down as far as it can go!
Ha, I don't know what lions you've been listening to! I appreciate a coloratura technique like that, but I do think the voice could be used in a slightly brighter manner. Some notes that could murder the orchestra are a little lost in this recording. Thoroughly incredible technique though.
Ewa Podles is fabulous in every way! Her gorgeous, rich voice; her perfect pitches in the coloratura; and the acting! She really takes you to the opera, even though this is a concert.
Brava, indeed! She does not do her coloratura like Bartoli...Bartoli has some weird-ass larynx stuff going on - this grand dame has some truly musical legato runs and it is accented a bit more so that it can be heard distinctly...it is not aspirated and wild and uneven like Bartoli.
She's a TERRIFIC actress, as well - both in gesture and musically! She really savors every word!
I wouldn't agree (but then again, I'm a Bartoli fan, and many people think her too breathy), but it certainly is extraordinary. It is very nice to have a coloratura contralto about. Such a rarity!
Wow! At times her tone sounded a bit swallowed and I think my voice teacher would get on me for jerking my head around on the runs like that, but what power! Such great expressiveness and personality as well!
Beatiful voice but too heavy and pathetic rendition for this aria! It looks like she has worked out every small detail but there is a feeling of tension one doesn't expect listening to Rossini's operas. Anyway, she is really an amazing singer.
How lovely and rare to find a living singer capable of tackling Dramatischer Alt, Tiefer Alt and Dramatischer Mezzosopran repertory. She very nearly has the color of a baritone at the bottom in full chest mode! Quite incredible. Would love to hear her and Jennifer Larmore sing together sometime!
Hmm.. I think perhaps Larmore LOOKS a bit more feminine in this case.. but perhaps someone will write a duet for two pant roles where they both portray men who are perhaps in love with each other. Now THAT would be an interesting opera! haha
LOL, I hate slang. I know your comment means that Ms Podles is an amazing singer. I just hate terms like "beast", even though a beast is a good thing when it comes to singing, most people don't know that and they think you are saying something bad about Ms Podles.
Now calling her a bitch is not good, I know it's popular with the young crowd and it's not meant as an insult, but it just sounds mean.
pani Ewa jest po prostu genialna !

Too covered. Chiaroscuro, the light/dark tone is the mark of the Golden Era. There
is NO ONE on the OPERATIC STAGE TODAY who can come up to that standard.

I call her "The Steamroller"- my favorite!

Anyone ever notice how in almost every aria, Rossini ends the same way 4 notes - 4 notes - 2 long - final? haha

I wouldn't call her singing in general "breathy", but many people (myself included) take issue with her aspirated coloratura.

Search for her version of "Venti turbini", the last note is just frightening.
