it was as you described, images shown in rapid succession, but in phantasmagoria, the images are generally unrelated. This was also a japanese horror game in th 90's :).
I was surprised they did not affect me at all. ThatI found disturbing and actually had me thinking before even reading the replies here. But then it hit me. These are images of dead people, not of suffering people. I'm not a Christian. Death does not come with taboos, or whatever baggage, to me. Death is just the end of life. It's natural. The natural is not shocking. It just is.
Indeed! Such images are not shocking to me either. However, death is feared instinctively, and these images are going to evoke shock in people naturally. Also the effect of subliminal imagery is stronger on the subconcious than the concious. like a bruise that is under the skin not on the skin. But you are quite correct, yes, Death is all natural and it just is. Indeed! Quite absurd, we have invented all the various religions through fear of it.
I think they used to shock people with all this kind of stuff, because they didn't like how the mainstream culture made violence and death look so cool and sexy.... The answer is either in leichenschrei-cd or in SpK-fan site.. (in a interview).
Information Overload. Thus, all the images being showed subliminally in rapid succession. It has an effect on the subconsious, be careful! - I have the DVD myself. Came with a free post card - Yay!
how is it shocking? they're human beings, like all of us - we will become like them in our time

I'm purposely not looking at them. I am sure they do have an effect, are supposed to.
