Most are indeed quiet - but not all. In the UK at least 1 in 6 has noise complains which is surprising given that making a noise complaint has a dramatic effect on the value of your house.
@RandomConcepts Whoever said wind power is going to take over? It's still in experimental stages, according to my understanding. I can't say it's efficient right now, but I think it's a good thing to work toward. Give it a chance. As far as the visual, I don't think they ruin landscapes. They do not look industrial, they look like moving sculptures. It depends on individual tastes, but so do a lot of things.
The wind against the camera is MUCH louder! People try to prove that they "make noise" by measuring decibles(sp) and other crap but you don't need to measure anything! Just stand near one and you'll see they aren't as noisy as people make them out to be. Even when the wind speed is up, it's just a relaxing ocean-like sound. It's nothing more than those white noise machines make!
I've been up close to some large turbines under heavy wind.. You can only hear them when you're about 100yds away or less, and even then its a slight whistling/rushing sound as each blade passes. Not louder than wind through trees. For the amount of energy it produces, it's pretty quiet. Try standing next to a 500KW diesel generator.
who in the hell ever said they were silent? ive worked on 80M towers and on the ground they did make noise but not that much....as for ugly...yea i dont get that either
U are so wrong, I work with Vestas and no they DONT make alot of noise, at least the ones we produce dont. they put out about 40dB worth of noise, in other words, no louder than when we talk
And I'm getting a Physics degree, i can asure you that dB scale sometimes can be very misleading. First is not linear, it's a Logarithmic scale wich means the difference between 10 and 20dB is diferent than 20 to 30dB, although teorically both 10dB's.
dB is a measure for the amplitude of the vibration, not the energy, so you can have many 40dB sounds with being percepted by the human ear in many diferent ways. Also the frequency/timbre is important because some frequency/timbre can be much more hazardous to human ear and having the same dB's.
Conclusion, i live near one, and they do alot of noise.
I cant say I live near one nor have I been to a large one in a wind farm, Im on the production line (crane operator) From the videos and training we receive its said that they arent loud, I know Siemens and GE have their wind turbines too, I cant really speak for how much noise those put out.
I would like to comment on the video that was posted in response to this video, the one saying that the turbines only make 106 DB. I think that it is making a great point, do you live at property 3? If more people were willing to face up to what needs to be done to save our planet, like the person behind this video, and fewer were complaining about things which are happening as a consequence of their lifestyles, the battle against global warming would be much easier won.
you don't live near a wind farm do you ??? I do... they DO make noise, and they absolutely get ice and snow buildup on the blades. But the thing that pisses ALL of us off the most is the goddamn shadow flicker !!! it's like having a slow pulsating strobe light outside your house going on and off in the summer from about 6-9pm.... and will piss the shit out of you BIGTIME !! to supply america's energy needs they would need to build something like 77 MILLION wind turbines.. they are a joke.
FOR ALL OF YOU COMMENTING ABOUT WIND TURBINES. Turbines can run away for several reasons. Not all of them are human errors. The blades can get stuck in degree their pitched to. In extreme high winds turbines will go into emergency mode and pitch blades back. Now there is a max rotor rpm and generator rpm the turbine can have before it shuts off.
Much in the same way your car's differential can lock up, causing you to skid out of control into a wall; the resulting structural damage trapping everyone inside. Then the fuel injectors could explode, burning the occupants to death. Suppose the car had defective parts installed. Happens all the time. Things like this are seldom human error, and like any other machine, they cannot always be prevented. Your car can fail just as easily, but you aren't getting rid of it because of that, are you?
what a piece of shit you are. Cool, lets build some more coal plants while you feed your fat face and waste gas and pollute the air driving to these wind projects to prove they make some noise. What we need is a darwinian moment where you choke on your granola and end your miserable existance, hippy.
I could make assumptions about you based on your age. Yes the turbines make noise it is a swoosh sound. and I have heard them in all types of weather at all different angles. I'm no fan of coal, nuclear, oil and gas are far more dangerous than the noise of the turbines. if this is your only complaint then check out what oil, gas nuclear and coal destroy in their wake and how destructive they can be to a landscape. the grass will grow back around the turbines as well as trees given time.
you didnt take into context the thousands of wildlife killed every day either from barotrauma(caused by massive pressure difference.) of physical hits by turbine blades.
since chernobyl and 3 mile, what major nuclear incidents can you cite? i mean with regards to civilian nuclear rector core?
thats two vs more than 5 wind turbine mishaps.
and you need a large number of turbine to power NYC.
the destruction I meant has to due with land and water and wild life destruction coal pollutes air and water oil and gas pollute ground water in production and since I have see the heating up of water near nuclear plant heat dissipation lines causing elimination of local water life by changing the ecosystem. The wind turbine technology has changed and are more sensitive to wild life
The increased water temp the tower cooling water cause is addressed in a documentary by Rory Kennedy on the river keeper. It can also be look at in a law suit brought up by the hudson river keeper it is on their wed site. I did have the addresses on the previous letter but it would not post with them so Google it, and as I said I have see it first hand, before 9/11 now we are not allowed near the site so I can't say how much it is doing now.
Rory Elizabeth Katherine Kennedy is an award-winning documentary filmmaker and producer.
Hopefully that will answer your question. the nuclear plants pull in river h2o & kill fish, h2o returned to the river heats the water and boils fish & plant life. turbines have killed birds but new technology less are killed and because of bird study's they can be turned off during migration of birds, I do not mind the sound they make, I have lived by turbines, it was quieter than where I live now.
yeah alex jones is a self professed awarded documentary/filmmaker/producer.
if that person you mentioned produces films, and not an environmental expert, or does not refer her works to environmentalist and scientific organizations like NGS, chances are that she has enough money to make movies up irregardles of it being accurate, impartial, etc or not.
second you have not mentioned who, what, when, where, & how, the "STUDY" you refer to was made.
wind turbines do make some noise as mentiond befor...it's a mechanical object....but by the time you climb down the 200 - 300 foot tower to the ground the noise level drops to well below 60 db's (which is less then a whisper) the noise you hear is from the blade tips cutting through the air at around 200 mph....and befor someone asks how many wind sites have i been on...many...i've been working on them for the past year and 2 months.
hi Lancerkind....how many windfarms have you visited, and in what wind conditions etc.? I hear noise every time...depending on where you stand of course. I could, I think, by careful positioning, 'prove' with a Video, that they were Noisy or Noiseless, depending on how tha fancy takes me.
In this video we both enjoyed, what did you think? Was the wind turbine creating more noise than the wind itself?
Mechanical things usually make noise. Within a few hundred feet, I'd expect there to be some sound. From what I can tell from the video, it's completely reasonable.
I could post a YouTube about the noise coming from I5 which is much louder than the wind buffeting a microphone, and I5 supports greenhouse gas emitting cars.
The new turbine farms I have seen are ugly. They're a blight. Shame on the "poor" rural people for pimping out their once-beautiful land. Shame on the biz people for using tax dollars to rape the view in the name of "green" energy. Shame on the greens for failing to recognize that this particular energy "solution" is from hunger, fossil fuel or no. If this is the best we can do, then we are pathetic. Go visit a turbine farm before responding. Video imagery cannot convey the impact.
It's a matter of who got there first. If it's the wind turbines and some developer decides to build houses there, and you buy one then screw you. Same if you buy a new house by an airport, screw you. There are vast swaths of land and sea that contractors can build these turbines on. Wyoming, Texas, and Nevada for example.
Shut up you stupid HIPPIES. GLOBAL WARMING IS A HOAX. Whats going to be next? You crazy nutbag NATURE NAZI's will all be complaining that some poor stupid birds are getting hurt by the evil capitalist's windmills! Go dig a ditch and live in there. We on the outside enjoy all the luxuries that modern society provides.
Anyone who doesn't like wind turbines can move to (for example) Cincinnati, Ohio, which is in a "wind resource class 2" area, which means there won't be any wind turbines in Cincinnati for the foreseeable future. Check the wind resource maps from the Department of Energy to see the vast swaths of the USA which will never have commercial wind turbines.
Why should anyone have to move anywhere if they don,t want? If I already lived in a neighborhood and they tried to put wind turbines in, I would probably try to stop them if they were too close and too loud. Why should I have to move?
So we can move all the allies of terrorism out of the way of progress toward energy security. Luddites are the best friend Saudi Arabia ever had. Reality is asserting itself. Oil prices are up from $20/bbl in 2003 to $120/bbl today, with no end in sight. Peak oil theorists have predicted this since the 1970s. Once oil hits $200/bbl and keeps going, wind turbines will go up on every suitable site, because people will realize the fossil fuel fantasy is ending.
The actual price of a barrel of oil in 2007 was $27.69 adjusted for inflation it would be $31.62 in todays dollars! The fossil fuel fantasy? Up until now that fantasy has worked pretty good over the last 100 years! Would you have preferred steam power, wooden stoves for cooking, wood or coal for heating homes, factories etc. Because up until recently the technology did not exist for alternative energies other than nuclear or natural gas! Without oil, gas etc you would have had wood and coal!
My farm has been here for 180 years. The house I am typing this is was built in 1827. Why should I change because you want an energy intensive lifestye? Take your noisy wind turbines somewhere else.
I used to cashier at an art supply store, Lots of granola crunchers. This lady bought some stuff and When I tried to put it in a bag she snapped at me about how "Plastic pollutes the environment". I just said "oh yeah, How did you get here?" She GRABBED her stuff and huffed out. I still smile today when I think of that day. Good timmes. :)
I really don't get this ... are some people dense or something ??? Let's focus a little bit here shall we ??? Oil and coal : BAD !!! Wind turbine ? well not really the same thing is it ? ... I mean I'd love it if there would be a perfect solution to this problem but there isn't one yet ... so unless you moved back to the stone age I'd really like to urge you to start thinking about our options here (like most other people) and pick the compromise that's best suited for our future...
You have got to be kidding, get some technical expertise on how to record outdoors in the wind. I'd rather have the tress back that are uprooted to make room from these inefficent tax schemes. Trees help the environment more than wind turbines. Anyone in favor of turbines is makeing money from them period.
If you're such a true lover of nature, why are you so in favour of the exisitng forms or energy generation that a) pollute our atmoshpere (i.e. the biggest threat to your beloved nature) b) cost so much to run, explore new coal seams etc.
Wind is free, wind is clean, wind is everlasting...period... You're making more noise here than a wind turbine ever will
Environmentalist who hate corporations have no problem taxing people to subsidize alternative energy and make the corporation richer. They hate the very corporations that produce the technology that makes life easier, saves lives and engineers alternative energy. If she is an environmentalist shouldnt she walk to this windmill and use a pencil and paper to draw it and describe it, after all, Cars and cameras are made by corporations, burn gas and are made from petroleum products such as plastic.
No one can drive cars and claim to be an "environmentalist," that's for sure, but paper is one of the most polluting/energy wasting industries, so try again.
Especially those who drive Ford Excursions and Hummer H2's. I hate these people above all others. Granted, even electric cars rely on some sort of polluting energy source. There will never be anything non-polluting about humanity. Human nature is based on self-destruction.
I wouldn't say I hate them, but I wonder why they hate everyone else?
Did you know that if everybody in the U.S. lived like everybody who lives in New York City, the U.S. would not be importing any foreign oil? The per capita gasoline usage in New York City is equal to the per capita usage for the whole U.S. in the year 1920. Plus New Yorkers use far less electricity than the national average (despite the blazing lights in Times Square).
The wind turbines are beautiful, i live near to 9 of them, they are graceful. No noticeable noise apart from a low hum if the wind is EXTREMELY high, and even then, cars passing on the road are louder.
Good job Ms. Dragoness. I think it's great when people go to see wind turbines for themselves instead of relying on second hand information to make up their minds for them. Go to a wind turbine and see for yourself how noisy or ugly they are before becoming close minded about them.
Wind turbines are very inefficient and cause considerable disrution in respect of noise and view, they are not the answer to global warming but politicians love them as they can be subsidised (Profits for their pet firms) and look good for their green credentials. Watch the events in the UK which will soon be covered by wind turbines, do not bother to visit go to a prettier country such as the old East Germany!!
Is this the same Germany that already draws more than 25% of its power from *GASP* wind? Oh dear. Get a clue. Extraordinary claims require extraordinary proof. Show me your sources for your information.
Your illiteracy and closed mind enables you to miss words such as "East" when linked to Germany a country whose landscape was ruined by Soviet greed. My point was that many other countries incuding the UK are taking short term decisions that will have dire long term consequences.
I think efficiency is all relative. The car she was driving can be more efficient then a wind turbine sitting there no wind blows. East Germany is quite nice, I find it more pleasing aesthetically then the UK. I think the hundreds of wind turbines there enhance the scenery. Of course, people have varying opinions. I wonder though, what are some good alternatives to wind turbines?
Actually the car was necessary in order for them to transport the camera without it getting broken so that they would be able to show us the wonderful footage that they did. And if you really wanna be environmental, mytube, then youd stop commenting on everyones videos and go out and actually make a difference. And what person has a handle name with the name of the website in it.
Joshandspot:I currently use an Air 400 wind turbine and two 120 watt solar panels to power my home out my video-Wind vs. Solar-My Experience. My car is a VW diesel which runs on bio-diesel and gets 46.7 MPG. Ive been a vegitarian for 12 years now. I am trying to make a difference by discouraging big corporate wind from building near peoples homes, away from Wildlife areas and only in the most efficient areas of wind.
Joshandspot:Ive spent almost $10,000 trying to "actually make a difference" with solar, wind and High MPG Bio-Deisel Vehicles.I took no public money for these projects.I designed and built my own renewable energy system as shown in my video. What kind of renewable system do you use at your home joshandspot?
Wind and solar power should be used on an individual level.Big corporate wind destroys ridge tops, birds and bats, peoples property values and takes vast amounts our tax money and vast amounts of land to produce very litte, very unreliable power.Power to the people not big wind companys. If you are an environmentalist as you claim you should have your own system. You might want to keep your car out of the video as most environmentalist walk or ride bikes.
The car isn't mine, it's my friend's car. I don't even have a license, let alone a car. Aside from that detail environmentalist or or not, in upstate NY where everything is spaced far apart doing without a car is very impractical, so claiming that someone is less of an environmentalist because they own a car is ridiculous.
IceDragoness:I was only suggesting that it would look like a more environmentaly friendly video if the car was not in the picture. A bike ride or walk up to the turbines might "look" better in a pro environment video thats all. Im only trying to promote personal renewable energy systems and less driving. It was not ment as a personal attack.I do think that there could be a relationship between the amount and type of cars one drives and their level of environmental concern.
Im a bit puzzled....Clearly, wind Turbines do make noise, all you have to do is visit one to hear it. Different degrees of noise according to your position, closeness, down wind or not, and distance from it, and degree of background noise. I think I must have missed your point?
@mytube8488 My god, you are such a FUCKING idiot, I agree with IceDrangness that just because somebody owns a car does not make them less of an environmentalist than anybody else. Also since you don't allow comments on your video reply (most likely because you are afraid of people with different views than your own) Have you ever been and stood close to a wind turbine, if you stand right underneath it, ofc it will be loud. Move back a few meters and it is almost dead quiet.
The company that proposed to put windmills on my, and some of my other neighbor's properties are receiving tons of resistance from the local area and one of the major complaints is about them being "noisy".
haha....ACTUALLY....they can make alot of noise...but not that often, when they yaw into the wind there are 4 or more motors that turn the nacelle....and the teeth on the underside of the nacelle have to be greased, if they become dry it can be very loud when they yaw....it's even worse inside the turbine cuz it echoes and everything vibrates.....sooooo yes turbines can make noise
To all of those opposed to wind turbine installations: Would you rather have: a coal fired power plant; a diesel power plant; a nuclear power plant; or 60 wind turbines in your immediate proximity?
jerrymc88:The coal, diesel and nuclear plants would be in an areas zoned INDUSTRIAL.Homes are not built in industrial areas.Windturbines however, are being built very close to peoples homes. The proposed Eco Grove project in Stephenson County,Illinois has at lease one 400 foot tower 500 feet from one familys home.Wind power has not closed any traditional power plants because of the inconsistant nature of the wind and the relativly small amount of power provided.
It's a nuclear power plant...the water used to cool the reactor is open to swim in and to fish and boat in, so you tell me that there isn't any risk involved with not having it closed to the public. Another thing...power supplies such as wind farms are not meant to compete with power plants; therefore obviously no power plants will be shut down because of wind turbines. No job loss, all gain. You got a problem with that?
My best friend's father had consistent work for over two years because of the construction of Twin Groves; so go kiss an ass. So wind turbines are being built close to peoples' homes...Nuclear power plants are built close to peoples' homes, too. And what's this crap about the inconsistency of the wind? So the wind doesn't blow...What about when the goddamn reactor core melts down and everyone within 10 miles is wiped out? Ever occur to you?
Finally, maybe you have noticed that there are no trespassing signs on all the access roads leading to turbines. If they somehow fail and break, no one should be near them when it happens. Keeping them 500 feet from houses is because the only way they are going down is in a F3+ tornado. In which case the turbine is the least of your worries. Anyhow, I am simply in favor of clean energy, and if you don't like it, maybe you should not live in the country where they build them. problem solved.
Here is a story from 3-7-09... Many residents were shocked that a massive wind-turbine could come tumbling down and officials say it could take months to learn why one collapsed Friday. Mike Fellion flew over the wreckage Saturday morning and was amazed to see that pieces of the structure appeared to have been thrown "about a quarter-mile away."
March 7, 2009 by Andrea VanValkenburg in Press Republican
During a tornado, cars and houses and cattle can get thrown miles away. If winds are strong enough to knock down a modern wind turbine, there will be lots of other things getting damaged. The heaviest part of the turbine (the nacelle) probably won't fall far.
Airplanes crash on houses all the time, and moving 500 feet farther away from an airport doesn't help. Shall we outlaw airplanes?
All forms of energy production are dangerous. Humans have fought many wars over petroleum, for example.
Wind turbines can fail in high winds if their rotor brakes fail and the rotor overspeeds. This is fairly rare, and requires several backup systems to fail at the same time, but with tens of thousands of wind turbines in operation, it might happen once or twice a year.
Generally there won't be too many people standing around outside in a raging windstorm that is strong enough to knock down a modern wind turbine, so it's unlikely the pieces will land on anyone.

No injuries, but Wallaceburg man wants an investigation
WALLACEBURG - Bill Fish wants the Municipality of Chatham-Kent to investigate homemade windmills after his neighbour's device came crashing through his roof during yesterday's high winds.
Three wind turbines at Perkins High School crashed Saturday when the blades broke off one of them. Parts of the fiberglass blades came off the turbine as it spun, winging the blades 40 yards away from the silver monopole tower, near the high school at 3714 Campbell St. The remaining two turbines will not be used until they are inspected and officials figure out what caused the blades to break

A sensor which should switch off a wind turbine in icy conditions has failed - for the second time. A faulty sensor on the turbine in King's Dyke, Whittlesey, was blamed for huge shards of ice flying off its blades and crashing into homes and gardens in November. ..."The turbine was shut down immediately after we were alerted, and will remain in this state until further notice."
January 24, 2009 by Marie Baker in The Evening Telegraph
So you say a sensor failed in a wind turbine causing it to fling shards of ice everywhere. I'm sorry to say, it's virtually impossible for ice to build up on something that's moving fast enough to fling them far enough to hit someone's house, especially since said house should be 500 feet or more away. Do you know how much force it takes to fling a large amount of ice that far? More than the wind could provide, short of a hurricane or tornado.
No...I didn't say it. It was reported January 24, 2009 by Marie Baker in The Evening Telegraph.
Here is another new story... Feb 02, 2009 04:30 AM

In cold climates, the right combination of moisture and cold air can cause ice buildup on blades. This not only reduces the aerodynamic performance of wind turbines, but ice thrown from a blade can travel "up to several hundred meters," according to GE Energy, which makes turbines.
You seem to research these machines an awful lot considering how you seem to be against them. Anyway, bottom line is: I like them, you don't. Am I correct?
you are right if anything on a wind turbine fails it is automatically stoped by a fail safe mechanism the only ways its possible for it to fail is human error say if a turbine is stoped because something is wrong with it and instead of fixing it someone overrides the failsafe.
is that a serious question??? haha...they are white because the tower of the turbine is almost all steel, alot of fiberglass as well....if it was any other color it would absorb more light and it already gets hott enough on the inside without help from the sunlight
@mytube8488: you are talking shit. 28 dB is the level of a residential erea, i guess? got nothing to do with this. Mills have a on/off button, why shouldn't they have one? A mill of 1 MW is enough for 250 households, at nominal produce.
the wind is hardly blowing and the microfone of the camera is in the wind. this movie isn't that ideal to prove that windmills aren't noisy. My windmill has 102 dB at 10meters height, that means 6,5 meters under the tip of the wing (it's a 40m mill, V47-600kW). At grond level, it's only 84dB. The law prescribes a maximum noise level for work (in holland) of 80 dB all day long. The averige cardriver is exploded to more noise, driving on a highway.
The maufacturers own info says the put out 106 dbs of noise. Our area noise levels are predicted to go from 28dbs up to 42dbs(just under the legal noise pollution limit of 45dbs).When the wind is not blowing other traditional power plants must be fired up to make up the difference. They are like very weak power plants without any off/on control. They average about 200 acres per megawatt. Even if you put a turbine on every availible acre in the country you could not make enough power.
These wind turbines seems to be of a fairly recent design, and quite a lot of research has gone into adressing the issue of noise. Older types of wind turbines (usually the ones with an open steel girder tower rather than the tubular steel towers we see in this video) were quite noisy in some cases.
Are they pretty or ugly? My experience from living in the "home country" of modern wind turbines is that you hardly notice them...!
(Let's)(Who cares about quality of camera?)(You're)(You're trespassing)(devastated)(Having a little dead patch in your yard, or a small hum in your yard, or more things to take care of is better than half the world dying...)
Please have a look at my video - yours is shot on a piece of waste ground - the proposed turbines on the Solway Firth will be double the size of the ones you show. Would you REALLY like to have 60 of these monsters outside your front window? I guarantee you Will hear them!
Good for u making this vid but it's a wind TURBINE not a windmill. Windmills are from the olden days when people used to *mill* wheat and ...shit. geddit?

I'm no fan of coal, nuclear, oil and gas are far more dangerous than the noise of the turbines. if this is your only complaint then check out what oil, gas nuclear and coal destroy in their wake and how destructive they can be to a landscape. the grass will grow back around the turbines as well as trees given time.
witchypoo47 2 years ago
you didnt take into context the thousands of wildlife killed every day either from barotrauma(caused by massive pressure difference.) of physical hits by turbine blades.
since chernobyl and 3 mile, what major nuclear incidents can you cite? i mean with regards to civilian nuclear rector core?
thats two vs more than 5 wind turbine mishaps.
and you need a large number of turbine to power NYC.
a nuke plant can handle that for less.
nakazatoGTR 2 years ago
the destruction I meant has to due with land and water and wild life destruction coal pollutes air and water oil and gas pollute ground water in production and since I have see the heating up of water near nuclear plant heat dissipation lines causing elimination of local water life by changing the ecosystem. The wind turbine technology has changed and are more sensitive to wild life
witchypoo47 2 years ago
where is that claim that heat from nuke plants kill water wildlife?
yeah right, not one such thing was even reported by national geographic.
second what do people turn to when wind turbines are shut down due to storms?
yup most turn to IC generators.
wind turbines dont even produce enough power in average! except when installed in a pretty windy place, such as hawk, eagle and falcon gliding spaces.
i dont like fossil fuel, and impractical wind crap, but i like nuclear! more bang for buck!

The increased water temp the tower cooling water cause is addressed in a documentary by Rory Kennedy on the river keeper. It can also be look at in a law suit brought up by the hudson river keeper it is on their wed site. I did have the addresses on the previous letter but it would not post with them so Google it, and as I said I have see it first hand, before 9/11 now we are not allowed near the site so I can't say how much it is doing now.

who and what is rory kennedy?
what profession?
what group is she in?
please spell wed site correctly.
you can post links as long as you put spaces.
and second, i dont think the heat stuff from nuke plants occur on all nuke power plant maybe just this particular on.
second you did not address the practicality, ecologic, and health impacts of turbines.
i mean everyone who once supported wind turbine near their homes are now complaining of noise problems.
nakazatoGTR 2 years ago
Rory Elizabeth Katherine Kennedy is an award-winning documentary filmmaker and producer.
Hopefully that will answer your question. the nuclear plants pull in river h2o & kill fish, h2o returned to the river heats the water and boils fish & plant life. turbines have killed birds but new technology less are killed and because of bird study's they can be turned off during migration of birds, I do not mind the sound they make, I have lived by turbines, it was quieter than where I live now.

well you havent mention WHAT awards.
yeah alex jones is a self professed awarded documentary/filmmaker/producer.
if that person you mentioned produces films, and not an environmental expert, or does not refer her works to environmentalist and scientific organizations like NGS, chances are that she has enough money to make movies up irregardles of it being accurate, impartial, etc or not.
second you have not mentioned who, what, when, where, & how, the "STUDY" you refer to was made.

wind turbines do make some noise as mentiond befor...it's a mechanical object....but by the time you climb down the 200 - 300 foot tower to the ground the noise level drops to well below 60 db's (which is less then a whisper) the noise you hear is from the blade tips cutting through the air at around 200 mph....and befor someone asks how many wind sites have i been on...many...i've been working on them for the past year and 2 months.

hi Lancerkind....how many windfarms have you visited, and in what wind conditions etc.? I hear noise every time...depending on where you stand of course. I could, I think, by careful positioning, 'prove' with a Video, that they were Noisy or Noiseless, depending on how tha fancy takes me.
fenbeagle 3 years ago
In this video we both enjoyed, what did you think? Was the wind turbine creating more noise than the wind itself?
Mechanical things usually make noise. Within a few hundred feet, I'd expect there to be some sound. From what I can tell from the video, it's completely reasonable.
I could post a YouTube about the noise coming from I5 which is much louder than the wind buffeting a microphone, and I5 supports greenhouse gas emitting cars.
Turbines are a solution rather than a problem.
lancerkind 3 years ago

Teratornis 3 years ago
Why should anyone have to move anywhere if they don,t want? If I already lived in a neighborhood and they tried to put wind turbines in, I would probably try to stop them if they were too close and too loud. Why should I have to move?
quaheedus 3 years ago
So we can move all the allies of terrorism out of the way of progress toward energy security. Luddites are the best friend Saudi Arabia ever had. Reality is asserting itself. Oil prices are up from $20/bbl in 2003 to $120/bbl today, with no end in sight. Peak oil theorists have predicted this since the 1970s. Once oil hits $200/bbl and keeps going, wind turbines will go up on every suitable site, because people will realize the fossil fuel fantasy is ending.
Teratornis 3 years ago
The actual price of a barrel of oil in 2007 was $27.69 adjusted for inflation it would be $31.62 in todays dollars! The fossil fuel fantasy? Up until now that fantasy has worked pretty good over the last 100 years! Would you have preferred steam power, wooden stoves for cooking, wood or coal for heating homes, factories etc. Because up until recently the technology did not exist for alternative energies other than nuclear or natural gas! Without oil, gas etc you would have had wood and coal!

Good job Ms. Dragoness. I think it's great when people go to see wind turbines for themselves instead of relying on second hand information to make up their minds for them. Go to a wind turbine and see for yourself how noisy or ugly they are before becoming close minded about them.
alanhowitzer 4 years ago
Wind turbines are very inefficient and cause considerable disrution in respect of noise and view, they are not the answer to global warming but politicians love them as they can be subsidised (Profits for their pet firms) and look good for their green credentials. Watch the events in the UK which will soon be covered by wind turbines, do not bother to visit go to a prettier country such as the old East Germany!!
derynpaul 4 years ago
Is this the same Germany that already draws more than 25% of its power from *GASP* wind? Oh dear. Get a clue. Extraordinary claims require extraordinary proof. Show me your sources for your information.

Your illiteracy and closed mind enables you to miss words such as "East" when linked to Germany a country whose landscape was ruined by Soviet greed. My point was that many other countries incuding the UK are taking short term decisions that will have dire long term consequences.
derynpaul 4 years ago
I think efficiency is all relative. The car she was driving can be more efficient then a wind turbine sitting there no wind blows. East Germany is quite nice, I find it more pleasing aesthetically then the UK. I think the hundreds of wind turbines there enhance the scenery. Of course, people have varying opinions. I wonder though, what are some good alternatives to wind turbines?

Actually the car was necessary in order for them to transport the camera without it getting broken so that they would be able to show us the wonderful footage that they did.

IceDragoness 4 years ago

To all of those opposed to wind turbine installations: Would you rather have: a coal fired power plant; a diesel power plant; a nuclear power plant; or 60 wind turbines in your immediate proximity?
jerrymc88 4 years ago
jerrymc88:The coal, diesel and nuclear plants would be in an areas zoned INDUSTRIAL.Homes are not built in industrial areas.Windturbines however, are being built very close to peoples homes. The proposed Eco Grove project in Stephenson County,Illinois has at lease one 400 foot tower 500 feet from one familys home.Wind power has not closed any traditional power plants because of the inconsistant nature of the wind and the relativly small amount of power provided.
mytube8488 4 years ago

jerrymc88 4 years ago
jerrymc88:Zoned industrial does not mean no public access. It means there are no residental properties allowed, only industrial.
mytube8488 4 years ago
It's a nuclear power plant...the water used to cool the reactor is open to swim in and to fish and boat in, so you tell me that there isn't any risk involved with not having it closed to the public. Another thing...power supplies such as wind farms are not meant to compete with power plants; therefore obviously no power plants will be shut down because of wind turbines. No job loss, all gain. You got a problem with that?
jerrymc88 2 years ago
My best friend's father had consistent work for over two years because of the construction of Twin Groves; so go kiss an ass. So wind turbines are being built close to peoples' homes...Nuclear power plants are built close to peoples' homes, too. And what's this crap about the inconsistency of the wind? So the wind doesn't blow...What about when the goddamn reactor core melts down and everyone within 10 miles is wiped out? Ever occur to you?
jerrymc88 2 years ago
Finally, maybe you have noticed that there are no trespassing signs on all the access roads leading to turbines. If they somehow fail and break, no one should be near them when it happens. Keeping them 500 feet from houses is because the only way they are going down is in a F3+ tornado. In which case the turbine is the least of your worries. Anyhow, I am simply in favor of clean energy, and if you don't like it, maybe you should not live in the country where they build them. problem solved.

500ft is not far enough for a failure.
March 7, 2009 by Andrea VanValkenburg in Press Republican
mytube8488 2 years ago
During a tornado, cars and houses and cattle can get thrown miles away. If winds are strong enough to knock down a modern wind turbine, there will be lots of other things getting damaged. The heaviest part of the turbine (the nacelle) probably won't fall far.
Airplanes crash on houses all the time, and moving 500 feet farther away from an airport doesn't help. Shall we outlaw airplanes?
All forms of energy production are dangerous. Humans have fought many wars over petroleum, for example.
Teratornis 2 years ago
The turbine in this story did not fall due to high winds. It was a wiring issue.
Airplanes do not crash into houses "all the time". When did I say we should outlaw wind turbines? All I said was 500ft is to close to homes.
All forms of energy production are not dangerous.Personal solar poses very little if any threat to anyone.
We use very little petroleum for electrical generation. What do oil wars have to do with wind turbines?
mytube8488 2 years ago
The nacelle isn't the heaviest part. How about the tower sections or the rotor.
justincerveny 2 years ago
Wind turbines can fail in high winds if their rotor brakes fail and the rotor overspeeds. This is fairly rare, and requires several backup systems to fail at the same time, but with tens of thousands of wind turbines in operation, it might happen once or twice a year.
Generally there won't be too many people standing around outside in a raging windstorm that is strong enough to knock down a modern wind turbine, so it's unlikely the pieces will land on anyone.

January 24, 2009 by Marie Baker in The Evening Telegraph
mytube8488 2 years ago
So you say a sensor failed in a wind turbine causing it to fling shards of ice everywhere. I'm sorry to say, it's virtually impossible for ice to build up on something that's moving fast enough to fling them far enough to hit someone's house, especially since said house should be 500 feet or more away. Do you know how much force it takes to fling a large amount of ice that far? More than the wind could provide, short of a hurricane or tornado.

In cold climates, the right combination of moisture and cold air can cause ice buildup on blades. This not only reduces the aerodynamic performance of wind turbines, but ice thrown from a blade can travel "up to several hundred meters," according to GE Energy, which makes turbines.

@mytube8488: you are talking shit. 28 dB is the level of a residential erea, i guess? got nothing to do with this. Mills have a on/off button, why shouldn't they have one? A mill of 1 MW is enough for 250 households, at nominal produce.
bergje82 5 years ago
the wind is hardly blowing and the microfone of the camera is in the wind. this movie isn't that ideal to prove that windmills aren't noisy. My windmill has 102 dB at 10meters height, that means 6,5 meters under the tip of the wing (it's a 40m mill, V47-600kW). At grond level, it's only 84dB. The law prescribes a maximum noise level for work (in holland) of 80 dB all day long. The averige cardriver is exploded to more noise, driving on a highway.
bergje82 5 years ago
