Well I don't think you can compare A prophet to those movies. If you watch it thinking you will see another Scarface (which I believe is completely outdated by now) you will be disappointed. This movie has nothing to do with a Hollywood movie.

A prophet is not about gangsters but rather about life in a french prison, a criticism of the french society seen through the evolution of the main character. I personally like both kinds but have a preference for Audiard's genre.

I know what the movie is about I SAW IT...It was hyped like an epic.. is what I said...I liked the movie , good acting etc...BUT IT WAS COMPARED TO the epic movies I mentioned before.

I don't know why it was promoted like it was a Godfather etc epic type of movie.

PS HYPE is the key word..I guess its to bring in people in movie theaters.

All right, now I got your point. Indeed HYPE is the key word... I saw this movie only a week ago, that means much more time after it's original release date and all the fuss they made about it.

I was expecting to see an almost perfect movie as the previous movie from Audiard, The beat that my heart skipped, was already a reaaally good one but didn't get much attention from the media.

In the end, A prophete is a good movie, but I'm much more into The beat that my heart skipped.

First of all, Godfather is a gangster movie, not a prison film. There is no single prison scene in the Godfather. This movie is about conquering the narrow odds of survival when confronted with very limited choices in a highly confined space. You cannot even compare this to Scarface, which is basically a movie about drug-traffcking and excess drug consumption. Next time you comapre a movie to another one, at least do your homework and pick up appropriate comparison.

I saw this movie. It shocked me with its realizm depicting life in a French prison. The message is very simply. DONT GO TO JAIL. If you commit a crime and you go to jail, not only will you lose your freedom, but you can kiss goodbye your dignity and manhood. Life in a French jail is worse than living like a prey in the wild. There is a pecking order. You will have join in, do your task, even if it means killing an innocent man. All this for the price of living another day.

ZbLuffer, the scene with the razor is perhaps the most squeam-inducing scene. It is horrific at every level. Human violence knows no bounds. Because we are so intelligent, we can kill in a milliion ways, while wild animals, no matter how ferocious and powerful can only kill one way: choking their prey to death. There is something poetic about such simplicty, while human violence inspires revulsion.
