ps2 games have jaggles or rough looking pixels when you look at the graphics close up as the ps2 hardware never had the ability to anti-alias like the dreamcast or gamecube via the hardware it had to be added by the coders but was rarely done as it is difficult to implement via code within the game.The ps3 hardware smoothes out the lines and rough textures and jaggles and can make games like winning eleven ect look much better then they would if you where running them on the ps2.
so in short if your lucky enough to own a american or japanese ps3 which has a ps2 chipset inside ps2 games look great compared to what they do on the ps2 more like a dreamcast or gamecube game.
Smoothing also works with Ps3 games. Try fallout new vegas for example, it looks much better with smoothing on
