Hey there, another great vid. Noticed you seem to have a thing for dynamics on the hihat. Can't see that we'll but looks like a 57 and saw an sm7 in another vid. I guess the 451s pick them up quite well in OH position anyways huh? Or do ya like the sound? I can never get an SM7 to sound decent on the hats... Never gets any sparkle!
@iamhaydenwilliams I mix up my hihat mics depending on the sound I'm looking for. Sometimes it's a 57, sometimes an SM7, but it could also be an SM81, old Neumann KM84, AT4050, or even nothing and I'll just rely on the overheads.
I enjoy the sound of felt beater double kicks, rare to see in application. The classic sound of coated heads and your beaters make for an aggresive/unique setup.
@TheOthersDrummer Since you've only been playing for three months, it may not be the best idea to make blanket statements like "double bass is cheating". There are plenty of things I couldn't do with one pedal that I can with two, just as there are things I can't do with one hand that I can with two. You're in the "listen more, speak less" phase of learning - keep an open mind to all the possibilities.
@TheOthersDrummer I didn't say anything about 15" floor toms. I'm saying that you are clearly uneducated because you say that double bass is cheating.

The snare is a '96 Ludwig birch 5x14, 8-lugs. I know they aren't making this drum currently. I'll have a look when I'm in the studio tomorrow re: # of plies.
Overheads on this are an old (70's) pair of AKG 451E; they went through ClassicAPI VP26 preamps that I built. I used a pair of Shiny Box 46CMX ribbons in the room about 20' away from the drums.
There's very little EQ in the mix. I did have a parallel compression bus on the drums that was feeding an Overstayer FET compressor and the whole mix went through a Foote Control Systems P3S comp and a pair of Five Fish PEQ-503 EQs. Apogee conversion on the tracking and mix.
Are those coated G2's?

@TheBrodeo3833 Thanks! I have some Danmar wood beaters, too, but I generally prefer the sound and feel of the felt ones.

You know what I'll just go shoot myself because I've only been playing drums for about 3 months

Dude, when you have the time, can you make a video tour of your studio. Because I'm curious to see what you use to get that amazing sound.

@amtrakboy37
I may just do that. It's not fancy - just a small amount of really excellent gear that I love.
bleener 6 months ago
@bleener really exellent gear!? That's awesome! I'm curious now lol.

Wow!! I love the clean mix sound! Was this recorded at a studio or at a home studio?
amtrakboy37 7 months ago
@amtrakboy37
Thanks! Well, it's a studio in a building behind my house. Is that a "studio" or a "home studio"? :-)
bleener 7 months ago
@bleener hahaha! I guess there isn't that much of a difference. Except in a professional studio you get a clean recording lol!
