  • As far as I know samba is a Brazilian music played on percussion instruments not necessarily drumset. He plays the hi hat on the downbeats because he chose to. There's no right or wrong in music. I think it feels and sounds great with the hi hat there. It sounds great on the &'s also. Learn to do it both ways for more independence. How anybody can comment negatively about Steve Gadd is beyond me. I wish I had 1/10 the experiences he has had.

  • And yeah, Steve Gadd is a great drummer. There are drummers with more "chops", faster hands, more "authentic" samba feel, etc. But it's not a sport or an academic treatise. The point isn't always to be more "authentic" or technically superior. It's Steve Gadd's feel, originality, and perfect tailoring of a drum part to the song's arrangement that set him apart from others, IMO. Yeah he's always reinventing ways of voicing the kit, but he also ALWAYS shows paramount attention to the SONG!!!

  • You might play better on your best day than Gadd does on his worst day, but we don't remember any artist for their bad days. We remember them for the works that thrill and inspire us to the point that the experience transcends and transforms our lives. Until you create something like that, it's hard to see your criticism as having the same validity as the beloved thing you criticize. I think if you want to change minds, you have to move hearts first, and people who can do this are very rare.

  • If an American tries to play Latin rhythms, no matter how well, the comment thread is always full of Brazilians or Cubans complaining "they ain't doin' it right".

OK - so they are snarky about other countries playing with their cultural heritage.

That must be why, if the French, Germans or British play rock or jazz the Americans complain about it in the comment thread, then?

Actually, come to think of it.... THEY DON'T.

    Go figure...

  • @SAHBfan There isn't a single "rock beat".. rock is a large genre of music.. there is not wrong or right in rock, just good or bad. It is apples and oranges. Samba is dance music, brazilians don't even need to be a musician to be able to decipher correct samba from something that, while might be good, is not samba. playing dotted eight sixteenth on bass drum doesn't make a beat samba. It is as ignorant as an american talking gibberish that sounds like to portuguese and calling it portuguese

  • why are Brazilians so fucking stupid

  • @Fruscianteistheman Q. WHy did the Red hot Chilli peppers cross the road? A. Because they were running away from the rehab clinic.

  • @Teabonesteak Ah, roads, We have those in America. Seriously though Brazilians disgust me, they haven't produced anything of merit and they smell like shit.

  • @Fruscianteistheman Q. What is the difference between the Red Hot Chilli Peppers and Harriet Tubman? A. Harriet Tubman was a Heroine to the slaves whereas the Red Hot Chilli Peppers are slaves to heroin.

  • Sometimes he does the same pattern on both hands...this is not like our samba..I love steve, but the real samba is more complex

  • The rhythm that he is doing has name? What is the name? Thank you in advance

  • Samba é só para brasileiros!!

  • Gadd makes me proud to be a Rochestarian!

  • Don't know much about minute drum technique.

I respect Gadd, though this does not sound like proper Samba.

Try listen to Edson Machado, one of Brasil's best drummer....

  • Gadd is god, has been said before but ppl need to be reminded...don't know the samba.??? What a stupid remark...simply stupid...this guy rules ..period...

  • @Ronnybengt Try Lilian Carmona on Youtube...beats Gadd by far

  • @Ronnybengt He's a great drummer, but Samba is samba, and he isn't playing samba. No big deal, it just isn't samba.. He is playing partido alto rhythms and a fusion beat.

  • God I love that guy

  • does someone knows where can i get this tape?

  • would this be considered jazz samba?

  • @MrFunkymusiclover Listen To Maria Rita is you want to know what jazzy Samba really sounds like. This beat is a fusion beat with some brazilian rhythm inspired ideas.

  • That anyone would criticize the playing in this video strikes me as completely absurd, the academic ramblings of people whose attachment to concepts and rules precludes their ability to enjoy something which is so obviously the expression of a god-given gift, honed and delivered in a way that would make the man upstairs proud.

The beauty of music is in its fluid ability to be reinterpreted thru the hearts of those that create and perform it; talent on this level is humbling to witness.

  • @KushAudio I think people take objection to the title samba simply because Americans have taken Samba quite far out of context, and I think if America has a music considered to be our national music, and another country took it, and changed it significantly, to the point that it sounded strange to us, but called it by the same that we do, we would take objection, no! I am an American with Brazilian family members, and studied music here.. I think it's fair that some object to calling it samba

  • Would all the "Drum Nerds" stop trying to pick stuff like this apart. The guy is a legend and still plays better than most if not all of his contemporaries. In the video he is demonstrating a samba feel not an authentic samba. I also doubt any of us drummers are being offered gigs with Eric Clapton, James Taylor, Al Jarreau, Paul Simon etc.. So watch the clip or buy the video and learn something!

  • AMAZING DRUMMER

  • a real samba takes more than one drummer ...this is a drum set samba...more of a hybrid...what would you do ?...

  • On the 8th day, God created Steve Gadd!

    "In Gadd, we trust."

  • @1967botz Or did Gadd create God on the 1st day

  • i must agree with malagutti, we all know how great is mr gadd.by far one of the legendary drummers on the planet , i would prefer to call this work his version of funky samba,,,even though hasn,t played as a samba

  • I hate the people saying that he has a lot to learn about samba.. Just because he isn't playing a super-authentic samba, it doesn't mean hi can't. Hi is doing something personal, and that's far more interesting.

  • a lot of people are bickering about the authenticity of this groove but i think there is a point thats missed ;

this is steves samba.it doesent claim to be authentic,he has taken the samba and interpretted it differently through his personality and taste. i would like to remind some people that music is about beeing creative and communicating your feelings to others.we wouldn't even know about samba if carlos jobim hadnt had his way with it to create "girl from ipanema"

  • @MrGritstoner I agree with what you say, Gadd's an amazing drummer and very creative, but do not mistake Bossa nova for Samba, they're different genres. Bossa was influenced by Samba but it's not Samba. For the real Samba look for guys like João Nogueira, Cartola, Candeia, Bezerra da Silva... and for real samba drummers look for Kiko Freitas, Edu Ribeiro and Marcio Bahia and compare...

  • @MinotaJJ opologies, i should have been more sepcific and worded my comment better! ;

i wasnt referring to the samba or bossa rythms particularly, just the latin style in generall that jobim brought to our attention. are these guys the original samba players then? i have been looking for the earliest recordings of samba with a guitar, percussion, electric bass kind of arrangement because i believe this would be the most authentic in the arrangement i would like to play.could you help?

  • @MrGritstoner Oh i see. So my apologies too, i got it wrong. That's really true, Tom Jobim really is one of the people that introduced latin music to the world. And about the samba players i mentioned, they're the old school "sambistas", so nothing of electric bass and guitar. But, the drummers i mentioned are some of the best modern brazilian musicians so try looking up on them. They're not specifically samba players, they play pretty much everything, but they definitely master the genre.

  • @MrGritstoner but if you want really early modern samba musicians, try looking for Edson Machado. He is known for having "adapted" the samba to the drums, so no one better to look than him.

  • @MinotaJJ that is PERFECT thankyou so much

  • @MrGritstoner Girl from ipanema is bossa, an entirely different music. A lot of people here are talking about things they don't know about, just because they are steve gadd fans. I like steve gadd, but a lot of these people sound like ignorant assholes to me.. Samba is the national music of Brazil, and it is a dance music that people are born into knowing.. This means, they don't need to be a musician to know that what they are hearing is wrong. I think a lot of people here need to respect it

  • @TheMalagutti No offence dude, but you've got a lot to learn about Steve Gadd. Check out the huge repertoire of his works before you draw conclusions. Read the comments below, your point been discussed already. Cheers.

  • @boyrob85 I know his work, only commented on the video in question, and it is not far from samba, steve gadd ia a great drummer, but sometimes he makes mistakes primaries. He mark wrong time in hi-hat, is horrible for me to hear that I'm brazilian!!!

  • @TheMalagutti eu concordo amigo. Esses gringos vao entendem nada.

  • @TheMalagutti True, his hi-hat time is not authentic samba in that he keeps it going on the downbeats instead of the off-beats like authentic samba. But I wouldn't call it a mistake because its his own interpretation of the samba groove. Anyways, do check out the links I mentioned, and I'll be interested in your take on whether the samba he plays there is authentic enough (if there's even such a term :-). Cheers

  • @boyrob85 he is a great drummer, but it just don't sounds authentic... i'm brazilian too and i see a lot of drummers less experienced than steve gadd playing a much better samba here... it's very difficult for someone who was not raised listening to samba play it well... check out the videos from Oscar Bolão or Marcio Bahia

  • @louizzzxd So you honestly think he couldn't play a completely faithful samba if he wanted to and that an amateur could play it better than Steve? Give me a break, he isn't a professional world renowned drummer for no reason, ask Steely Dan.

  • @maccagrabme that's exactly what I think... what do you know about a completely faithful samba? I listen to samba since I was born

  • @louizzzxd So you are telling me a world class player that has been playing since he was a child and has worked with some of the greatest artists ever could not play a faithful samba? This guy has created new drumming styles and inspired millions, I find it ridiculous that you are implying he could not play something he would find incredibly simple. I might not know a faithful samba but I DO know how good Gadd is.

  • @TheMalagutti This is the steve gadd samba bro its a very famous interpretation the Brazilians!!!! use on records because they like it more

  • @TheMalagutti i agree i am no samba drummer, but i bet they tons of uknown drummers who nail this kinda thing better than steve gadd, he is a great studio drummer, jack of all trades, his vocabulary sounds amazing, he is limited tho, you only learn this if you study and transcribe his work. Im not knociking the guy at all hes a legend, this isnt that hard to play either once you know how dudes.

  • @TheMalagutti .... who cares if you are Brazillian ... your comments are dumb ... it would be like an American or English guy commenting on your rock playing and then saying " it hurts me because I am American "

  • @sweetfly66 No, actually he is correct.. in America we have created this Samba Jazz beat that everyone seems to think is real samba.. Listen to Elis Regina, or Almir Guineto, and you will see we have bastardized the Samba beat (which isn't intended to be played on drumset originally).. The type of Samba americans are always trying to play on set is Samba enredo (in-head-oh) this is the Carnival Samba, usually if a drumset is playing brazilian samba, it is playing very specific rhythms.

  • @gleventhal ... couldnt bastardized also be considered evolution ... i mean really , rock players dont play the same way as they did in 1955 or in the 60`s or 70`s ... by your logic a double pedal is a bastardization of playing bass drum ... i understand that Brazillians consider samba to be something precious or spiritual or whatever , part of their national identity ..but this is 2012 ... it belongs to everyone now

  • @gleventhal ...one other thing ... everyone playing something the same way is boring ... no other genre makes people play so rigidly ...well , maybe classical percussion ..but certainly no drumset / dance sort of genre ... even in jazz where you need the sort of swing spang a lang ride cymbal ..there are lots of variations on it , and the jazz cats dont get upset if you stray from the basic beat ..but do that in samba and its a national attack on their pride or something ..its dumb

  • @sweetfly66 Well it IS their national music, and I believe they have a reason to hold it proud and wish to keep it authentic. Also remember, it is a music people DANCE to! Unlike all of the other musics.. When people dance to a type of music all of their life, they tend to feel when something is "off" in the way it is being played. Surely you can understand that, right? Samba is not a listening music as much as a dancing music. That is the main point, they feel the difference.

  • @TheMalagutti fuck u .. :)

  • @TheMalagutti that's why it called steve gadd's samba dude..i know what you meant bout technically, but still it feels like samba,STEVE GADD'S samba :-)

  • @TheMalagutti The hi-hat variation is a little nit picky if you ask me. The main groove of the samba is driven by the bass drum and as long as you imply the upbeat musically somewhere in the beat elsewhere that is still samba.

And BTW, just being from Brazil doesn't make you an authority on Sambe. I'm American and I'm far from an authority on blue grass or swing...even though I try my best with swing;> hehe

  • @TheMalagutti and BTW...trying to correct a legend drummer like Steve Gadd in how he plays a Samba implies that you must consider yourself an "authority"...otherwise it would be foolish to even try. So yea, don't back peddle on that one.

Not that I'm trying to start something...I think it is pretty safe to say that everyone that is porting on this video is far...FAR...below the drummer food chain compared to Steve Gadd.

    Myself included.

  • Samba é com Milton Banana.

  • You can hear this style of "samba" In Chick Corea's Samba song

  • It is far from "Samba" sorry.

  • @tony1946

Its a funkified version of samba. A Gadd trademark. Check out the Steve Gadd In Session videos. He plays his samba in a much more authentic fashion there

  • @boyrob85 if you study samba at university in Brasil & showed up playing like SG in this vid, they'll say "cool, but this ain't samba". if anyone does deep research (atm I'm doing my thesis on 'samba carioca' for drumset) it'll reveal phrasing, patterns & concept in this video or the "in Session" vid do not line up with 'authentic patterns'. In comparison it's a watered down western interpretation. When clicked on TheMalagutti : country= Brasil & tony1946= brazilian music aficionado.

  • @tony1946

    How is it not?

  • @panamachasely

Steve Gaddd's is one of the best drummers out there if not the best. Just like I can't play anything and every thing, he can't either. He does not have the Brasilian swing, no soul... No Sincopation. he should do what he does best. tha's so.

No offense., I can play "SAMBA' way better in my sleep.

  • @tony1946

Just becos Steve doesn't play samba authentically here doesn't mean he can't play it. I've mentioned before, this is his own funkified samba which has become something of his trademark, and its something he uses extensively on the various Chick Corea CDs. For more authentic samba work by Steve, pls check out the Samba he plays in the 'In session Vids'. He plays quite authentically in some other recordings I've heard of him

  • @tony1946 In your dreams.

  • @tony1946 Apology not necessary. Perhaps what is necessary is re-education of the western world (in this case western drummers(?) on 'what is samba?'

  • does anyone have the sticking for the main groove??

  • You can find this groove on a song of Chick Corea called "Samba Song" (album : "Friends")

  • poaaah! That's insane!! Are you a professional drummer?

  • @buzzardkill

No i'm not a professional, I just play drums for leisure. The guy in the video is not me, in case you happen to think so. That's the legendary Steve Gadd, one of the best drummers on the planet.

  • @boyrob85 lol I thought it was not Steve Gadd :P . Would be really insane if an amateur drummer could play like that :)
