  • Some believers view December pagan rituals and secular celebrations as insults to Christianity. To them, this validates their own Christian beliefs, as such celebrations are clearly oriented around Christmas. Of course, to the educated among us, they only show their ignorance that the complete opposite is true. Even when I considered myself a devout Christian, I was aware of this, and it pained me that ignorant commentators were so vocal and passionate about a holiday they didn't understand.

  • I love this video ! Great job and nice music score too ! 5s and faved !

  • Ha! Fun quiz and information. The Nutcracker music is a perfect touch. The wikipedia article on Saturnalia is fascinating - I highly suggest it, if you haven't already read it.

  • as a pagan wiccan ied like to say thank you and bleessing Be to you )O(

  • romans they stole the greek gods and gave them new names kind of funny though as long as there still there but have different names there still there helping people

  • "Romans stole the Greek Gods"

Not entirely. See, the first 3 houses of what we would call 'Romans', were actually FROM Greece. They sailed and settled on the land. So, in reality, they just brought the Gods with them, and later changed their names. =P

  • I don't need a holiday on when I need to buy stuff, I buy it and be happy (when I have the money).

  • Do you celebrate christmas? Or even easter? Have you ever celebrated christmas or easter?

  • When I was a christian I did celebrate christmas. Now I celebrate the winter solstice. Like Christmas, Easter is also a pagan holiday that was stolen by Christianity. I need to make a video about Easter it seems.

  • that's a good ideea... "the winter solstice" sounds realistic, not inforced. now i have to figure out ways to make the celebration more fun. my personal contribution to it! great! many thanks:))

  • Hmm, thanks for the knowledge!

  • all c hristain holidays r taken from other religions in order to help convert the non christains into their religion

basicaly everything in christainty is pagan

just change the names and what not u get a whole new religion

    christians just cant see it

they enjoy being lied to all the time and having the wool over their eyes

they claim to know the truth when truly its a lie

  • @ellimist6 Christianity itself is pagan. They follow bastardized Roman pagan traditions not the Commandments and laws that Yah had provided. Hell... even the Messiah (Yeshua not Jesus) got bastardized and given a make over (the white image of Caesare Borgia), but the average Christian will tell you he doesn't care.

  • I knew all this already, but thanks for the reminder.

  • You should do a video asking the same question about The Spring Solstice being a Christian holiday. That would be interesting to see.

They have that holiday to celebrate the resurrection of Jesus. It should sound familiar.

  • same with Halloween and they stole that holiday too

  • Actually no, Christians don't celebrate Halloween. They hate it, and think its evil.

Catholics are the ones, who celebrate it, and they celebrate Christmas and Easter, too.

  • wow excellent video. I knew xmas wasnt christian but not specifically what so thanks for that. Santa was based off a roman saint though so that is actually christian, just more of there wishful thinking bullshit

  • The Christmas tree isn't anti-Christian. Where in the world did you get that idea? The Bible verse you used was taken way out of context.

Giving gifts and feasting is not anti-Christian either. Kissing under the mistletoe isn't anti-Christian either. Everything you put in this video isn't anti-Christian. You are missing the true meaning of Christmas. Jesus' coming into the world as a baby is the only thing about Christmas that really matters.

  • Decorating trees is anti-christian and I did not take the Jeremiah verse out of context. The other trappings of the Winter Solstice are pagan in origin and are not christian. This is what I stated in the video, not your strawman. Since Jesus wasn't born on the Winter Solstice, there nothing about that holiday that is christian. What matters is that Christians have stolen a pagan holiday and are too dishonest and intolerant to admit it. Thanks for the fine demonstration 1eaglesfan2007.

  • No, the Jeremiah verse says it is vain. We put up Christmas trees mainly for fun, but in the end they serve no real purpose. I fail to see how you think that makes it sinful. As to the date, we don't know the exact date Christ was born, so we chose to celebrate it around the time of the Winter Solstice. I fail to see how that makes it a pagan holiday.

  • You put up holiday trees as did the pagans. You fail to see that the Winter Solstice is a pagan holiday because your ability to comprehend the accurate information presented in this video is blinded by your own mind twisting superstition. You ignore or are ignorant of all the bible verses that tell you not to do as do the heathens/pagan, not to follow after other gods. The Winter Solstice is a pagan celebration, it is not the birthday of Jesus, it is the birthday of the new sun, the god Sol.

  • Many of the Christmas traditions have derived from pagan traditions. I never denied that. You keep saying the winter solstice isn't a Christian holiday. You are right again, but we are not talking about the winter solstice, we are talking about Christmas.

  • You call it Christmas then do all the trappings of the Winter Solstice. That is like going to an NFL football game on Sunday then claiming you went to church to worship god. Calling it Christmas then celebrating all the pagan activities of the Winter Solstice is hypocritical and dishonest. There is nothing christian about it.

  • Gary, you claim that Jesus could not have been born in December b/c the Judean winters were too cold for shepherds to be watching their flocks by night. But what do you think of the unblemished lambs for the Temple sacrifice that were in fact kept in the fields near Bethlehem during the winter months? However, knowing the birth of Jesus is not as important as celebrating it every day, not just once a year.

  • I did not make any claim about shepherds and flocks Jose, I just stated that according biblical scholars the Winter Solstice is not the date of the birth. I then provided links to the sources for this information. I am not an expert of sheep herding or killing animals for some blood thirsty god. For that information you should read your bible, it was written by sheep herders about just such a god.

  • I understand, however, you said in your last slides that Jesus was not born in December. And indeed, there is evidence of unblemished lambs kept for Temple sacrifice during the winter months. But even if the date is completely wrong, there is still the opportunity for thousands of people who wouldnt go to church any other time of the year to go on Christmas day and hear the gospel of Christ.

  • Having live stock out in the fields in the winter to graze seems silly since there is nothing in the fields to graze on. In winter months they are fed hay and grain and kept fenced up or in a barn. Like I said, I am not an expert at this, but I do see farmers around here harvesting hay during the growing season to feed their live stock over the winter months. This may be the basis of putting the date of birth at another time of year when there is grazing grass.

  • This was an excellent and informative video. Just to contribute, the ringing of bells had its origin in the early pagan winter celebration of ringing of bells to drive out evil spirits. In later centuries, bells were rung on Christmas Eve to welcome in the spirit of Christmas with joyful noise. Similarly, there was an early pagan tradition of lighting candles to drive away the forces of cold and darkness. Christianity can be traced back to all these superstitious pagan traditions.

  • though I've known the origin of "Christmas" for a while, thanks to the History Channel, it always still interests me. I still call it "Christmas" though, because it's a pretty secular holiday.

    great video.

  • i thought if jesus was real he had to have been born between may-august? Something to do with the shepherds and their flocks!?

  • We don't know when Jesus was born. We just celebrate it on December 25. Like you said, He most likely wasn't born on that date.

  • he most likely didn't exist.

  • Nice video! Most people don't know that Christmas is more pagan than Christian. I do have one objection though: I'm fairly sure that the passage you quoted from Jeremiah forbids making carved idols, and not Christmas trees. However, if you're looking for a quote that forbids celebrating Christmas (at least the way it is currently done), check out Deuteronomy 12, 30-31. It forbids adopting any pagan practices.

  • Merry Deus Sol Invictus!

  • Hey! In that case, I will start celebrating it!

  • Tremendous.

  • Perfect.

  • Actually the only thing Christian about it was Saint Nicholas, who gave gifts to the poor. Good Video :D

  • I have been trying to tell my family that "The only thing Christian about Christmas is the name" for years, but I never seem to make any headway.

  • Great video very informitive.

I have to admit though I won't care when I'm tucking into my turkey dinner after opening my presents! My tree looks good this year too... no Yule log though.. hmm.

No I'm not Christian either.... mmmm turkey....

  • Well, I for one as an atheist, love any excuse to take off from work, and enjoy time with my family, and/or friends.

Choosing the Winter Soltice seems reasonably appropriate as its that time of the year when we just want to huddle up at home anyways.

It would be nice to have a Summer Soltice celebration too though, in order to get the family together to enjoy the summer.

  • I live in Australia. For us, this IS the summer solstice celebration, though NYE is more fun.

I get xmas day and boxing day off, but that's about it. Beyond that, I don't think the day is worth the months of bullshit and grief leading up to it.

If it were within my power, I would happily cancel (or replace) xmas

  • "It would be nice to have a Summer Soltice celebration too though, in order to get the family together to enjoy the summer. "

    I do... mmmmm Barbecue meat.

Summer rocks for barbecue, have all the family around and grill those dogs! (British weather permitting of course!)

  • I have tried to explain the origins of christmas to fellow christians for years, but finally gave up. i am now a happy atheist.

  • Christmas is like garlanding a statue of Baal ffs.

  • Great job!

  • spec-tacyoolarrr!! i love the ending. happy holidays! after you just shattered the 'war on christmas' bullshit, seems like it jived with the bell sound of the music as well. hehehe.

  • I bet Mummers, like the Carolers of today, were told to get the hell off of people's doorsteps also.

IT'S 9 O FUCKING CLOCK! DON'T YOU PEOPLE HAVE SOME HOMELESS PEOPLE TO BOTHER OR SOMETHING?!

  • all true.

  • Nice work ;)

  • So what you're saying WE ALL PRACTICE THE PAGAN CELEBRATION?!? Omg, Christians remember you're not allow to worship any other religion besides your own!

  • Christians are as nasty as Star trek "Borg".

    MERRY SOLSTICE!

  • I always thought that cristmas was to celibrate the winter solstice (lowest point of the sun). And the silver balls were to ward off witches. They are scarred off their own "ugly" refection.

The name Santa clause comes from the Dutch/Belgian "sinterklaas" (Saint Nicholas).

  • Good stuff!

  • There was a video of some teenager teller his parents he is an Atheist. The very angry mother threatened him with no Christmas Presents because Christmas was all about Christ.

Apparently not! I wish I knew who the boy was so I could send him a nice Saturnalia present :p

    Here is the video. watch?v=3YSXKlO7qjA

  • I loved the ending "Happy Holidays". Also I loved the verse he gives about the "Christmas Tree".

  • Happy Yule!

  • oh yeah, happy pagan winter solstice, everybody!!

  • Netwriter, can you please provide citations for the pagan celebration claims at the beginning of the video? thanks.

  • one thing; if Jesus ever existed, it was my belief he was born in the summertime, near the end of August, but I don't remember where I got this information from.

  • It's not really a belief then, theScytheofGod, its just something you heard....

  • i'm sure it was done by some theologian, and it's possibly even in the bible somewhere, but I don't have the inclination to look it up.

  • It's lame when people try to take credit for other people's ideas.

  • I love xmas trees and lights, and all that stuff (actually, I've often thought of having xmas lights all year long, and then TAKING THEM DOWN for xmas!). It's cool to see an expression of exuberance in a frozen landscape.

I think atheists should join the club, and have these displays--and SIMULTANEOUSLY display the fact that what they're celebrating is the WINTER SOLSTICE.

  • The oldest religion has always been astrology. The further north you go the more important it is because the seasons vary more.

The Stonehenge site is over 7000 years old (it was wood originally) and is a temple to winter solstice and for healing.

Lets face it paganism is an excuse for fun which is fine by me.

Best Xmas video I've seen so far Netwriter thanks, happy Xmas or winter solstace or both.

  • 5/5

  • Wow, I did not know that the Bible had anything on Christmas tree in it! Thanks a lot! Now I have yet another bit of ammo to make Christians look stupid.

  • Good Video

    Have a Merry Winter Solstice

    Cheers

  • I knew i liked this holiday for a reason

  • thats funny....i didnt know there were pine trees in Egypt...damn, learn sometin' new everyday

  • America, WHAT HAVE YOU DONE TO OUR SAINT NICHOLAAS?!

(just kidding, don't take it to serious...)

  • The same thing you did to our Nisse. :]

  • Hey this guy didn't give Jeebus any props.. that's just baaaaaaaaad, baaaaaaaaaad, baaaaaaaaaad..

  • It appears Paganism is still alive & well;)5/5

  • Pagan holidays are fun afterall! Very nice.

  • santa clause is actually derrived from dutch tradition of saint nicholaas

  • > santa clause is actually derrived from dutch tradition of saint nicholaas

    No.

The English names "Saint Nick" and "Santa Clause" are taken from the German Sankt Niklaus and Dutch Sinterklaas.

The actual tradition is like Christianity. It was hobbled together from various different traditions and beliefs.

  • nope, th only thing christian about it is that saint nicholas was a bishop who gave money to the poor which eventually became a festival of giving gifts.

But we have the festival called sinterklaas hundreds of years before you guys had santa claus. Today sinterklaas has nothing to do anymore with christianity. It is just an old guy giving gifts on dec 5th together with his black helpers

    well who cares anyway right

  • You misunderstood what I said.

Again, I said "It was hobbled together from various different traditions and beliefs."

*One* of those many beliefs was the dutch festival. But it wasn't the *sole* belief like you seemed to suggest when you said "santa clause is actually derrived from dutch tradition of saint nicholaas"

  • Yeah, well, you forgot the NAME! That has Christ in it.

This is just a piece of GOD-HATING PROPAGANDA full of LIES.

    Hail JESUS!

    /Poe

Five bucks says you get a SERIOUS comment like that within the next two days.

  • I know someone who's pagan.

I'll have to thank them if I get a chance to see them this time of year and apologize for the Christian plagarism of many of their traditions.

  • Great vid, 5/5

  • that's why it's so funny that O'Reilly is outraged about an atheist sign next to a na'ivity scene and a holiday tree.

  • Those things are Christian because much of the faith is stolen/based on Pagan Gods!

  • fucking epic

    i found this very amusing

  • Try telling this to the Christians. Their eyes and ears have been covered by Christian glasses and Christian earmuffs^^

  • very nice!
