May God bless John for doing this & the poor guy trying to assist giving John the words. John was a good sport to sing it for this gentleman.John gave a sweet smile. So I think John did a wonderful job.
@sweetpea027 The gentleman in the john denver vide where he is singing the banks is Brendan Grace a famous irish comedian. Yes he was a good sport to do it but it is chancy pulling off a song you dont know in front of all the crowds.
What a tribute to John's love for his audience! HAving never seen this clip before, it's so terrific to hear how supportive those in attendance seemed to be.
He didn't make a bad job.. he had a bit of help (which was no good) from BG. He obviously only just learned it.. and fair play to him to try this tune.. not the easiest song to sing.. and names like Mardyke must have been alien to him. God rest JD
Yes, but he must have been very embarrassed! He really didn't know the song and his performance was not up to his highest standards. He didn't have to do it, and no other artist would have attempted it! That was the nature of JD. He was prepared to go any distance to engage with his audience. I remember seeing it on TV for the first time in 1986, and I thought it was an amazing tribute to his fans in Cork and to Ireland too!.
@Ghost99535 In truth John didn't know 'The Banks of My Own Lovely Lee'. He may only have heard the song for the first time that day. The song is practically an anthem for the people of Cork, and you can hear the local audience singing loudly with John.
It is a well known song here in Ireland but especially in Cork.
Brendan Grace was assisting John for the obvious reason that he needed help with the words, but still I always felt that it was a great tribute to his audience.
Bet you he could sing Heffo's Army!
